Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way
Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way. I felt well informed on the benefits and risks of the treatment. He checked in on me frequently before and after surgery. He even followed up after I was discharged and I will be seeing him again in 3 months time for another check. He has made it very clear that I can contact him if I ever have any questions. The doctor spoke good English but the interpreters were very helpful and made sure all my questions were answered clearly. The medical staff at Anadolu Medical Center were very attentive and met all my needs.
The medical staff from doctors to nurses to interpreters were all very attentive and helpful throughout my stay before and after surgery.
The hospital was very busy and there were at times long waiting times for my appointments in the various departments for my pre operation scans and checks.

All in all this was 10/10 experience and i fully recommend everyone to go to dr
The whole experience was amazing!! The doctors are very caring and attentive. Some nurses don't speak english but as long as you can use Google Translate you're good. You are sore, as expected, after the surgery but they give you plenty of painkillers. All in all this was 10/10 experience and i fully recommend everyone to go to dr. HE clinic for bariatric surgery. Update: I've added pictures of my progress below. The green dress is me at 121 kilos and the red is after 6 weeks, at 103 kilos.

"The doctors and staff deserve the highest praise
The room is not large, the sofa is very small and hard for an accompanying person to sleep very badly. The air conditioner does not work well, my husband bought a fan for me, the windows do not open at all, the screws are twisted, I have not seen this before. But the doctors and staff deserve the highest praise. The people working in the clinic are always polite and attentive. The comfort is poor.

Expert Overview about Obesity Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How long is the typical stay in Turkey for obesity surgery patients?

Obesity surgery patients in Turkey typically stay between 7 and 14 days. These timeframes allow for preoperative cardiac screening, the procedure, and post-operative monitoring. Most patients spend 2 to 5 days in a JCI-accredited hospital before moving to a hotel for final clearance.

  • Hospital stay: Patients usually spend 2 to 5 days in the ward for observation.
  • Hotel recovery: Packages often include 1 to 4 nights in 4 or 5-star hotels.
  • Medical clearance: Surgeons provide travel approval once patients manage hydration and mobility independently.
  • Procedure variance: Gastric balloon stays are shorter, often requiring only 0 to 1 hospital nights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient data shows a clear link between surgeon volume and recovery efficiency. Doctors like Prof. Cemal Kara, with over 6,200 procedures, often use bundles including 2 days of hospitalisation and 2 days of hotel recovery. This 4-day cycle is popular for gastric sleeve cases. Australian patients should look for packages that include at least 3 hospital nights. This helps ensure stable hydration before the long-haul flight back home.

Patient Consensus: Many patients note that stays in Turkey feel seamless. Clinics like Emsey Hospital and Anadolu Medical Center organise airport transfers and luxury hotel stays directly. Experience shows that an interpreter and personal coordinator help patients feel supported. This support covers pre-op tests and the swift discharge process.

Is it safe to undergo bariatric surgery in Turkey?

Bariatric surgery in Turkey is safe when performed at JCI-accredited hospitals by experienced surgeons. Leading clinics report 95% success rates for obesity treatments. Safety is maintained through rigorous pre-operative screenings, including cardiac and pulmonary checks. Expert surgeons often have over 10 to 20 years of experience.

  • Accredited facilities: Top centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Expert surgeons: Prof. Dr. Cemal Kara has performed over 6,200 successful bariatric procedures.
  • Clinical screenings: Packages include ECGs, chest X-rays, and oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for surgical fitness.
  • International affiliation: Anadolu Medical Center maintains a clinical affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Safety in Turkey is driven by volume. Dr. Omer Avlanmis at Liv Hospital Ulus has performed 4,400+ operations. This high frequency allows surgeons to refine techniques like laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Facilities serving 250,000+ patients annually often have onsite specialists to manage any immediate surgical needs.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the medical teams in Turkey are highly attentive and professional. They emphasise that having a clear follow-up plan and dietician support makes the recovery process much smoother.

What happens if there are medical complications after returning to Australia following obesity treatment in Turkey?

Patients return to Australia with clinical support. Turkish centres provide detailed theatre notes and discharge summaries so local GPs can manage follow-up. Medicare covers emergency presentations in public hospitals. Specialist bariatric packages often include 12 months of remote dietician support and surgeon consultations.

  • Remote follow-up: Packages often provide 12 months of nutritionist or dietician support via video calls.
  • Surgical documentation: Clinics supply complete operative notes in English to help Australian doctors.
  • Post-op medication: Many Turkish packages include required medications for the initial recovery phase.
  • Clinical support: Surgeons like Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal offer scheduled check-ins and direct contact.
  • Remote monitoring: Some Allurion packages include connected scales and watches for doctor-monitored progress.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric specialists focus on early risk screening to prevent late complications. Clinics such as Hisar Intercontinental Hospital integrate full cardiac screenings, EEG, and biochemistry tests. This proactive approach identifies potential issues before surgery. Because of this, clinics like Lotus Bariatrics report a 95% success rate. Australian patients should prioritise these diagnostic-heavy packages for peace of mind.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the medical teams in Turkey are attentive and maintain contact after discharge. They highlight the value of having interpreters present during all appointments. They also appreciate the frequent check-ins from their surgeons.

What obesity treatment options are available in Turkish clinics?

Turkish clinics offer obesity treatments including gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass, and gastric balloons. Procedures take place in JCI-accredited hospitals in cities like Istanbul. Most packages include preoperative screenings, hospital stays, and nutritionist-led follow-up for weight management.

  • Surgical procedures: Experts perform laparoscopic gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgeries.
  • Non-surgical devices: Options include swallowable Allurion balloons and adjustable Spatz3 systems.
  • Robotic assistance: Surgeons use da Vinci robotic systems for high-precision stomach resections.
  • Multidisciplinary care: Packages often bundle cardiac screenings, ECGs, and consultant nutritionist support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey specialises in gastric balloons as well as surgery. Allurion swallowable balloons at clinics like Lotus Bariatrics include connected scales and watches. This allows doctors to monitor weight loss remotely. It provides extra safety for Australians once they return home.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the attentive care from surgeons like Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal. They note that some nurses may not speak English. Even so, professional interpreters answer all medical questions clearly during the hospital stay.

What is the expected weight loss following obesity surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically lose 45% to 70% of excess body weight within 1 to 2 years after obesity surgery in Turkey. Gastric sleeve results often show a 63% reduction in excess weight over 5 years. Procedures like a bypass may produce faster results within 6 months.

  • Average reduction: Patient reports show weight drops of approximately 43.5 kg over 5 years.
  • Initial phase: Rapid loss often occurs within 3 months, sometimes reaching 20–30 kg.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy: This procedure typically reduces 60% of excess weight within 12 months.
  • Long-term success: Success depends on following nutritionist guidance provided in 1-year follow-up packages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for the highest weight loss, success is actually driven by surgeon volume. Data shows top Turkish surgeons, such as Dr Omer Bilgehan Poyrazoglu and Dr Cemal Kara, have each performed over 6,000 procedures. This high volume often results in more predictable outcomes and lower risks for complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report dramatic early progress, such as losing 18 kg in just 6 weeks. They highly value the attentive care from doctors. They note that using translation apps helps with nursing staff. Professional interpreters manage all medical discussions clearly during the hospital stay.

What is the typical recovery time for patients undergoing obesity surgery in Turkey?

Recovery for obesity surgery in Turkey typically involves 3–5 hospital days and a stay of 7–10 days. Most patients return to light activity within 2 weeks. Full recovery and starting solid foods generally take 4–6 weeks at Istanbul bariatric centres.

  • Hospital stay: Patients spend 2–5 days in hospital for monitoring and initial recovery.
  • Flying home: Most specialists require 7–10 days in-country before clearing patients to fly.
  • Return to work: Desk work is usually possible 10 days after sleeve or bypass procedures.
  • Physical exercise: Light walking starts immediately. Heavy lifting requires 4–6 weeks of healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric packages often include nutritional support that lasts longer than the physical healing. For example, Lotus Bariatrics and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental provide 1-year dietician follow-up. This is vital for Australians, as moving from liquid to solid foods is complex.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey note that physical soreness fades in a week. However, the strict dietary stages are the true challenge. Many emphasise that an interpreter and 24-hour nursing care, as provided at Anadolu Medical Center, makes early recovery easier.

Why has Turkey become a popular destination for Australians seeking obesity treatment?

Australians choose Turkey primarily for surgery costs up to 80% lower than Australian private healthcare. Leading Istanbul clinics hold JCI accreditation. All-inclusive packages bundle accommodation and VIP transfers. High-volume surgeons often perform over 5,000 procedures. Patients gain immediate access, avoiding domestic waiting lists.

  • Specialist expertise: Dr Burcin Batman at Hisar Hospital has handled over 1,000 bariatric operations.
  • Luxury inclusions: Packages often feature 5-star hotel stays and premium vehicle airport transfers.
  • Specialised technology: Clinics use da Vinci robotic systems and swallowable Allurion gastric balloons.
  • Long-term support: Many centres provide 12 months of nutritionist guidance via remote monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric centres lead in non-surgical volume. Our data shows clinics like Lotus Bariatrics achieve a 95.0% success rate. Some packages now include smart scales and watches for remote Australian follow-up. This tech helps bridge the gap for patients travelling from Perth or Sydney.

Patient Consensus: Australians appreciate the fast booking and thorough pre-op cardiac screenings. While language gaps exist with some nurses, the attentive doctors and translators in Turkey make the experience recommendable.
