Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way
Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way. I felt well informed on the benefits and risks of the treatment. He checked in on me frequently before and after surgery. He even followed up after I was discharged and I will be seeing him again in 3 months time for another check. He has made it very clear that I can contact him if I ever have any questions. The doctor spoke good English but the interpreters were very helpful and made sure all my questions were answered clearly. The medical staff at Anadolu Medical Center were very attentive and met all my needs.
The medical staff from doctors to nurses to interpreters were all very attentive and helpful throughout my stay before and after surgery.
The hospital was very busy and there were at times long waiting times for my appointments in the various departments for my pre operation scans and checks.
About Bookimed service
I always got a quick response and answer to all my questions. I felt very supported and well aided in making my decision for where I wanted to do my surgery.

Before I went, I told them that I needed some kind of operation. At the end, after all the tests, they tell me that this operation is not suitable for you. It turns out I went in vain and spent the money. double expense. I'm disappointed

FAQ about Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How long does recovery after gastric bypass surgery in Turkey last and what is the typical timeline?

Recovery from gastric bypass in Turkey typically involves a 10 to 12-day initial stay followed by a 6-week dietary transition. Patients generally spend 3 days in hospital under observation. They then move to a hotel for final clearance. Most return to daily activities within 2 weeks.

  • Hospital stay: Patients remain in theatre-linked wards for 3 days to manage pain and hydration.
  • Initial recovery: Most patients feel mobile and functional within 1–2 weeks. They can then handle basic daily tasks.
  • Dietary stages: Patients follow a strict 2-week liquid phase before moving to purees and soft foods.
  • Full activity: Light exercise is usually permitted by week 6. However, internal healing takes 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many packages include a 3-day hospital stay. However, clinics like Anadolu Medical Center provide individual rooms. They are also affiliated with Johns Hopkins. This provides American-standard monitoring during the critical first 72 hours. Choosing a surgeon with 1,000+ procedures significantly lowers the risk of early leaks. Dr Burcin Batman is one example.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the first fortnight challenging due to liquid diets and fatigue. They often feel well enough to explore local sights within a week. High satisfaction stems from the attentive nursing care and seamless airport transfers. Most report feeling back to normal for work by week 6.

What does a typical gastric bypass package from a Turkish clinic include?

Gastric bypass packages in Turkey bundle surgical fees, hospital stays, and logistical support. These are included in a single price. Standard inclusions cover pre-operative screenings, anaesthesia, 3-5 hospital nights, and VIP airport transfers. Most clinics also provide English-speaking coordinators and post-operative medications for a smooth recovery.

  • Medical tests: Includes ECG, blood work, and endoscopy to confirm surgical fitness.
  • Hospital stay: Typically provides 3 nights in a private room with nursing care.
  • VIP transfers: Private transport between the airport, hotel, and clinic is standard.
  • Post-op medications: Covers painkillers, blood thinners, and initial supplements for discharge.
  • Nutritional support: Most packages include consultations with a dietitian for 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many packages include a 5-star hotel, others like Lotus Bariatrics separate accommodation costs. Patients should check if their A$7,500 quote includes a companion. Top clinics often cover a support person’s meals and stay at no extra charge.

Patient Consensus: Turkish clinics organise everything from airport pickups to luxury hotels. This makes the process feel very efficient. Patients appreciate receiving a full kit of protein shakes, vitamins, and injections. These are for taking home to Australia.

What is the difference between a gastric sleeve and a gastric bypass in Turkey?

Gastric sleeve surgery permanently removes 75–80% of the stomach. In contrast, gastric bypass creates a small pouch and reroutes the intestines to limit calorie absorption. Turkish clinics perform both procedures using laparoscopic or robotic techniques. Most patients require a 3-day hospital stay. This is in JCI-accredited facilities across Istanbul or Antalya.

  • Procedure mechanism: Gastric sleeve restricts food volume, while bypass combines restriction with calorie malabsorption.
  • Clinical suitability: Bypass is often recommended for severe reflux (GORD) or Type 2 diabetes patients.
  • Surgical complexity: Bypass involves intestinal reconstruction. The procedure typically takes 2–3 hours in theatre, versus 45–75 minutes for sleeve.
  • Recovery duration: Sleeve patients often recover faster. In contrast, bypass requires stricter lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation.
  • Cost comparison: Gastric bypass costs from $5,000 to $6,000. This represents a significant saving on the $20,500 Australian average.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows bypass packages average A$2,000–A$3,000 more than sleeve options. This reflects the surgical complexity and additional consumables. Surgeons like Dr Hasan Erdem have performed 5,000+ procedures. This high case volume gives them the expertise needed for complex bypass intestinal work.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report the sleeve feels less invasive with fewer food intolerances. Those choosing bypass highlight steady weight loss and relief from chronic heartburn. Most found the 3-day hospital care and hotel recovery transition very smooth.
