Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way
Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal was present every step of the way. I felt well informed on the benefits and risks of the treatment. He checked in on me frequently before and after surgery. He even followed up after I was discharged and I will be seeing him again in 3 months time for another check. He has made it very clear that I can contact him if I ever have any questions. The doctor spoke good English but the interpreters were very helpful and made sure all my questions were answered clearly. The medical staff at Anadolu Medical Center were very attentive and met all my needs.
The medical staff from doctors to nurses to interpreters were all very attentive and helpful throughout my stay before and after surgery.
The hospital was very busy and there were at times long waiting times for my appointments in the various departments for my pre operation scans and checks.
About Bookimed service
I always got a quick response and answer to all my questions. I felt very supported and well aided in making my decision for where I wanted to do my surgery.

Before I went, I told them that I needed some kind of operation. At the end, after all the tests, they tell me that this operation is not suitable for you. It turns out I went in vain and spent the money. double expense. I'm disappointed

FAQ about Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the eligibility requirements to undergo a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey?

Eligibility for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey requires a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher. Alternatively, a BMI of 30-34 with obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea is accepted. Candidates undergo preoperative screenings, including blood tests and ECGs, at JCI-accredited facilities to check surgical fitness.

  • BMI requirements: Requires BMI 35+ or 30-34 with significant comorbidities like hypertension or diabetes.
  • Clinical screening: Mandatory blood tests, ECG, chest X-rays, and consultations with anaesthetists and nutritionists.
  • Previous attempts: Evidence of unsuccessful weight loss through diet or exercise is typically required.
  • Anaesthesia fitness: Patients must be cleared for general anaesthesia through cardiovascular and respiratory checks.
  • Nutritional assessment: Consultation with a nutritionist helps patients follow permanent dietary changes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric specialists often look for "surgical metabolic readiness" rather than just BMI. For example, Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal at Anadolu Medical Center requires extensive baseline data. This includes liver function and B12 levels before confirming surgery. Choosing a clinic with strict screening often indicates better long-term outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the medical screening in Istanbul very thorough. They also value the ongoing support from nutritionists. They suggest checking your BMI and sending recent blood results early. This avoids travel for a surgery you might not qualify for.

Will I require ongoing nutritional support after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in Turkey?

Patients require lifelong nutritional support and daily supplements after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey. The procedure alters digestion. This significantly reduces the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals. Continuous monitoring with an Australian GP and a specialist dietitian protects long-term health and prevents deficiencies.

  • Daily supplementation: Lifelong bariatric multivitamins, iron, calcium, and vitamin D are non-negotiable.
  • B12 injections: Many patients need regular intramuscular B12 injections every 1–3 months.
  • Nutritional consultations: Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group include nutritionist-led meals and consultations.
  • Blood monitoring: Annual or bi-annual pathology checks monitor ferritin, folate, and parathyroid hormone levels.
  • Protein prioritisation: Patients must focus on high-quality protein at every meal to maintain muscle mass.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric packages often include 2-3 days of nutritionist-prepared meals. Centres like Turan Turan Health Group provide these in the hospital. These meals help immediate recovery but do not replace long-term Australian dietitian guidance.

Patient Consensus: Success in Turkey depends on creating strict routines with pill organisers and alarms. Patients suggest arranging a blood testing schedule with an Australian GP before travelling for surgery.

Is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey considered a permanent solution for weight loss?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey provides a permanent anatomical change to the digestive system. Specialists at JCI-accredited clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental perform this surgery to create a lifelong metabolic shift. This typically results in over 50% excess weight loss maintained for 10+ years.

  • Anatomical rerouting: Surgeons permanently resize the stomach and bypass parts of the small intestine.
  • Metabolic impact: The procedure alters gut hormones to help resolve type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
  • Low revision: Research shows only 6% of patients require revision surgery after 10 years.
  • Clinical expertise: Surgeons like Dr Yahya Ozel have performed over 5,000 bariatric surgeries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric centres function as high-volume hubs. Anadolu Medical Center serves 65,000+ patients annually. This scale allows clinics to bundle 24-hour nursing and nutritionist support into packages from $4,600. This is critical for the initial recovery phase before return flights.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the medical staff highly attentive and feel well-informed about long-term risks. Consistent follow-up care and clear communication with English-speaking specialists help maintain confidence during the first year of lifestyle adjustment.

What weight loss results can be expected following a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey?

Patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey typically lose 60%–80% of their excess body weight within 12–18 months. Surgeons at JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul and Antalya often report initial weight loss averaging 32%–34% during the first year.

  • Long–term maintenance: Most patients maintain 67%–72% excess weight loss over a 10-year period.
  • Metabolic remission: Surgery frequently leads to significant improvement or full remission of type 2 diabetes.
  • Expertise volume: Surgeons like Dr Yahya Ozel have performed over 5,000 bariatric procedures.
  • Clinical success: Specialised clinics such as Lotus Bariatrics report an obesity treatment success rate of 95%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric packages offer an advantage for Australian patients through extended clinical monitoring. Australian private hospitals often discharge patients quickly. In contrast, clinics like Turan Turan Health Group include 24-hour nursing and nutritionist-led meals for two days. This early support helps stabilise weight loss before the flight home.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the constant presence of surgeons like Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal during recovery. They also value the help of on-site interpreters. They appreciate feeling well informed about benefits and risks throughout the process in Turkey.

How long is the required stay in Turkey for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery?

Patients typically stay in Turkey for 7 to 10 days for a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This allows for 2–3 nights of hospital monitoring and 4–7 days of hotel-based recovery. This period allows the surgical team to monitor hydration, oral intake, and travel fitness.

  • Hospital admission: Most clinics require 2–3 nights in hospital for immediate post-operative monitoring.
  • Hotel recovery: Packages often include 2–6 nights in a 5-star hotel after hospital discharge.
  • Pre-flight checks: Surgeons perform final evaluations and provide fitness-to-fly clearance before departure.
  • Clinical criteria: Stay length depends on drain removal, hydration levels, and tolerance of liquids.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics suggest a 5-day minimum, but packages with 3 hospital nights are safer. Clinics like Clinic Expert International Hospital bundle extra hospital time to manage post-operative nausea. This extra night often prevents dehydration issues during the long flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Most patients found the timeline efficient. They completed pre-operative tests within 24 hours of arrival. Doctors like Dr Abdulcabbar Kartal frequently check on patients from admission through to post-discharge reviews. English-speaking interpreters help ensure all questions are answered.

What is the typical recovery timeline following a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey?

Most patients recover from a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Turkey within 4 to 6 weeks. Surgeons at JCI-accredited hospitals like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental use laparoscopic techniques for faster healing. Initial recovery involves a 2 to 3-day hospital stay before discharge to a local hotel.

  • Inpatient care: Patients spend 2–3 days in hospital for monitoring and pain management.
  • Initial recovery: Most return to light activities and work within 2–4 weeks.
  • Physical restrictions: Heavy lifting and vigorous exercise are restricted for at least 4–6 weeks.
  • Dietary progression: Nutritionists guide patients from liquids to pureed foods over several weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group provide 24-hour nursing and tailored nutritionist meals. These inclusions help patients meet protein and fluid goals during their first days in Istanbul or Bursa.

Patient Consensus: Expect low energy and limited intake during the first week in Turkey. Following the staged diet helps manage common issues like nausea and food intolerance.

Why do international patients choose Turkey for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery?

International patients choose Turkey for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass because of JCI-accredited facilities and experienced bariatric surgeons. Patients access laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques with minimal waiting times. They often save up to 71% compared to Australian private surgery costs.

  • Experienced surgeons: Many specialists have performed 1,000+ bariatric procedures within high-volume centres.
  • Accredited facilities: Leading hospitals like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Memorial Şişli hold JCI and ISO certifications.
  • Financial savings: Procedures cost from $4,600 to $7,200. This is well below the $20,500 average in Australia.
  • Bundled logistics: All-inclusive packages typically cover 5-star hotel stays, VIP transfers, and mandatory pre-operative screenings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric centres often use robotic-assisted technology for complex Roux-en-Y cases. Standard packages include 2–3 hospital nights. However, Turan Turan Health Group incorporates nutritionist-monitored meals and 24-hour nursing. This intensive support helps patients managing Type 2 diabetes alongside weight loss.

Patient Consensus: Turkish clinics provide attentive care with helpful interpreters and frequent check-ins. Patients value the quick booking process and the thorough pre-operative testing to confirm they are suitable candidates.
