The entire process has been so smooth
What really put me at ease was the conversation with my surgeon. She took the time to show me before and after photos, explained what result to realistically expect from the wedge method on the labia minora and made me feel comfortable discussing my concerns. The entire process has been so smooth. I'm feeling better than expected right now. The clinic support has been great—they've stayed in touch, gave me a clear aftercare guide, and were always easy to reach. Plus, there were no additional expenses at all. My advice is simple: do your research, and if you have any questions, ask the coordinator. They are only too happy to help.
Excellent communication with the coordinator. Everything was booked for me - the procedure, hotel & ALL the transfers. I didn't have to worry about anything once I was in Turkey.
Nothing negative to report.

the support from the surgeon and the whole team was incredible
My biggest fear before the operation was adjusting to my new life, especially when it came to eating. But the support from the surgeon and the whole team was incredible. The operation was performed laparoscopically, and a significant portion of my stomach was removed—around 75–80%. Of course, recovery is a process. At the moment, I can only eat 2–3 spoonfuls at a time, and the main difficulty is that food can get stuck, so I have to get used to eating differently. Despite this, my energy levels have already improved slightly. I’ve realised the most important thing: forget your old eating habits! This is a new life in a new body, where you become a culinary connoisseur rather than a mere consumer of food.

"The doctors and staff deserve the highest praise
The room is not large, the sofa is very small and hard for an accompanying person to sleep very badly. The air conditioner does not work well, my husband bought a fan for me, the windows do not open at all, the screws are twisted, I have not seen this before. But the doctors and staff deserve the highest praise. The people working in the clinic are always polite and attentive. The comfort is poor.

Cons: There is a risk of pancreatitis post-procedure, occurring in about 5-10% of patients. It requires sedation, which may not be suitable for all patients.

FAQ about Surgery in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Do I need to do anything before my surgery in Turkey?

Before surgery in Turkey, prepare medical tests, bring essential documents, and arrange suitable accommodation near the clinic. Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center in Istanbul provide English-speaking coordinators and VIP transfers for smoother logistics. Bringing a companion is advised for post-surgery support during recovery.

  • Medical tests: Complete blood work and health screenings as directed by surgeons.
  • Documents: Carry passport, clinic confirmation, insurance details, and medical records.
  • Medication: Inform surgeons of all medicines; stop blood thinners if advised.
  • Accommodation: Choose 24/7 support hotels near clinics like Anadolu Medical Center.
  • Recovery support: Bring pain meds, bottled water, and pack loose, comfortable clothing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Anadolu Medical Center offer VIP transfers and English-speaking coordinators. This eases communication and airport transfers, which are vital for Aussie patients unfamiliar with local transport. Istanbul’s clinics generally provide better support and services than those in central Anatolia.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey recommend bringing personal painkillers and bottled water. Many find English-speaking coordinators helpful but say nursing staff often speak little English. Staying 3+ days post-op is common for managing swelling and flying home safely.

Is it safe for Australians to have surgery in Turkey?

Surgery in Turkey can be safe for Australians when performed at Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospitals by experienced specialists. Major centres in Istanbul offer robotic and laparoscopic surgeries with international standards. Still, careful choice and preparation are essential due to language and follow-up care challenges.

  • Accredited hospitals: Many clinics, like Anadolu Medical Center, have JCI and ISO certification.
  • Experienced surgeons: Doctors such as Associate Professor Yavuz Selim Yildirim have extensive international training.
  • Technologies: Advanced options include da Vinci robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
  • Follow-up care: Post-surgery recovery requires at least 2.5 weeks’ stay in Turkey for safety.
  • Support services: Some centres offer English-speaking coordinators, airport transfers, and hotel arrangements.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Despite mixed safety perceptions, top Turkish hospitals handling 10,000+ surgeries yearly maintain rigorous quality standards and patient support. Clinics with JCI accreditation and English-speaking coordinators, like Anadolu Medical Center, improve safety and communication — vital for Australians unfamiliar with Turkish language and systems.

Patient Consensus: Australians often find Turkish hospitals welcoming with friendly staff and smooth logistics. Staying over 2.5 weeks helps recovery. However, many advise choosing hospitals—not clinics—and bringing pain relief medicines due to limited post-op care in English.

How can I verify the qualifications of a surgeon performing surgery in Turkey?

A surgeon’s qualifications in Turkey can be verified through the Turkish Ministry of Health’s official authorisation, clinic accreditation, and specialist certifications like ISAPS. Major hospitals such as Memorial and Acibadem offer licensed surgeons and JCI-accredited facilities, ensuring legal compliance and high medical standards.

  • Ministry of Health authorisation: Check the clinic’s official certificate via USHAŞ portal.
  • Clinic accreditations: Look for Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO certifications.
  • Surgeon credentials: Confirm board certification and memberships like Turkish Surgical or ISAPS societies.
  • Clinic reputation: Prefer large private hospitals in Istanbul with proven international patient care.
  • Avoid reliance on social media: Photos and reviews can mislead on surgeon skill or results.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics such as Memorial Şişli, Anadolu Medical Center, and Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital all hold JCI accreditation and treat thousands of international patients yearly. Surgeons there often have international training, providing high care standards. Australian patients benefit from choosing these hospitals to access well-regulated environments and documented surgeon expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the importance of confirming clinic licensing and surgeon credentials directly. Calling out social media hype, many advise joining patient groups to get honest surgeon feedback. Larger Istanbul hospitals gave patients more confidence thanks to transparent communication and official accreditations.

What should Australian patients know about complications during or after surgery in Turkey?

Surgery in Turkey involves risks like infection, blood clots, and challenges with aftercare for Australians. Some hospitals hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental. Communication gaps and extended hospital stays may increase costs and complicate recovery.

  • Infection risks: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in some Turkish hospitals can cause serious infections.
  • Blood clots: Flying soon after surgery raises the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
  • Post-op care: Follow-up is tough from Australia; new local teams are often needed for complications.
  • Communication: Language barriers and limited nurse support can hinder access to emergency care.
  • Hospital standards: Some facilities have JCI accreditation, ensuring higher safety and quality.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The top Turkish hospitals with JCI accreditation treat 10,000+ patients yearly, providing clear pathways for safer surgery. However, many patients report poor nursing care and a scarce pain medication supply. Australian patients benefit from choosing reputable centres with English-speaking coordinators to ease communication and follow-up.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey found some doctors very accessible and supportive during recovery. However, arranging additional hospital stays when complications occur is common, so being prepared for longer trips is wise.

What is the typical process for Australians travelling to Turkey for surgery?

Australians travelling to Turkey for surgery start with online research and book virtual consultations with accredited Istanbul surgeons. After choosing a package, including hospital and hotel stays with VIP transfers, patients apply for a medical visa and complete pre-surgery checks. Surgery is followed by recovery and remote follow-up.

  • Pre-surgery consultation: Done online, typically takes about a week to schedule.
  • Visa application: Medical visa via HealthTürkiye portal recommended.
  • Transfers: Clinics like Lokman Hekim Van Hospital include airport, hotel, and clinic transport.
  • Surgery types: Options include open, laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and laser surgery.
  • Post-op care: Recovery often in hotel; follow-up may require remote consultations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Most clinics bundle VIP transfers and hotel stays in surgery packages. Selecting surgeons with European board certification is vital for safety. Some packages include 1–2 nights’ hospital stay plus hotel recovery, which matters for comfort and healing speed. Remote follow-up is common due to distance.

Patient Consensus: Patients say Istanbul clinics arrange smooth transfers and clear pre-op communication. Some bring their own pain meds due to language gaps. Waiting times average about a month from consultation to surgery. Patients like knowing they can get remote follow-up once home in Australia.

How long should Australians plan to stay in Turkey after surgery?

Australians should plan to stay 5 to 7 days after most surgeries in Turkey. More invasive operations like tummy tucks need 2.5 to 3 weeks for safe recovery. Leaving too soon raises the risks of blood clots and severe discomfort during the long flight home.

  • Gastric surgeries: stay at least 5 to 7 days post-op.
  • Invasive procedures: plan 2.5 to 3 weeks before flying.
  • Packages with hospital plus recovery home stay aid safe discharge.
  • Flying early can cause blood clots and nausea on long flights.
  • English-speaking nursing staff improve post-op communication and care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics offer 3–4 day post-surgery packages, but Australian patients need longer stays due to 20+ hour flights. Some top hospitals include nursing-supported recovery homes for about a week, helping patients fly comfortably around day 8. Booking flexible flights is smart to manage recovery delays.

Patient Consensus: Australians in Turkey say staying about a week after surgery helped them heal well. They appreciated nursing care and nearby accommodation. Many warn flying too soon caused awful nausea and exhaustion on the long trip home.

Do medical surgery packages in Turkey for Australians usually include accommodation and transport?

Medical surgery packages in Turkey for Australians usually include accommodation and transport. Clinics like Lokman Hekim Van Hospital offer hospital stays plus hotel accommodation. VIP transfers cover airport pickups and trips between the hotel and clinic, making the patient’s journey straightforward and stress-free.

  • Accommodation included: hospital stay followed by hotel recovery.
  • Transport: VIP transfers between airport, hotel and clinic.
  • Major centres in Istanbul such as Anadolu Medical Center arrange airport transfers and hotel bookings.
  • Packages are "all-inclusive," often bundling surgery, accommodation, and transfers.
  • Patients should confirm exact inclusions and transfer types before booking.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high patient volumes and JCI accreditation, like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Anadolu Medical Center, routinely bundle accommodation and VIP transport. A crucial tip: some Turkish packages add hotel stays after hospital discharge, not just overnight hospital stays. Confirm if transport includes all legs—airport, hotel, clinic—to avoid surprises.

Patient Consensus: Australians note Turkish surgery packages usually include hotel stays and airport transfers. Many find clear English communication and concierge services ease the process. Confirming package details upfront avoids unexpected costs like premium hotel upgrades or private transport fees.

What are the quality standards of hospitals in Turkey where Australians might have surgery?

Hospitals in Turkey where Australians might have surgery often hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, reflecting global safety and care standards. Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental deliver advanced treatment in clean, well-equipped facilities. Turkish surgeons frequently have international training, ensuring quality care.

  • JCI accreditation: Anadolu Medical Center, Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, Memorial Şişli Hospital.
  • ISO certification: Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital and Ankara Hospital maintain quality management systems.
  • Experienced surgeons: Many have US or European training and memberships in international medical societies.
  • Patient volume: Hisar Hospital Intercontinental treats over 250,000 patients annually, highlighting trust and capability.
  • Post-operative care: Hospitals provide video follow-ups and support after discharge for ongoing recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with JCI and ISO certifications often offer English-speaking coordinators and personalised patient support. For example, Anadolu Medical Center provides translators and VIP transfers, which matter for Australians who value clear communication and smooth logistics abroad.

Patient Consensus: Australians praise Turkish hospitals for friendly staff and thorough care. Many appreciate staff availability and clear communication, making the medical journey less stressful in Turkey.
