How Much Does Amputation Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Amputation in Turkey typically costs from AUD $2,110 to AUD $3,236. Final prices depend on the bone size, procedure complexity, and choice of medical centre. Patients save around 93% by travelling to Turkey from Australia, where this procedure costs AUD $39,671 on average. Inclusions generally cover surgery, anaesthetic, preoperative diagnostics, hospital stays, and airport transfers.

  • Procedure area: Large bone or joint amputations generally cost less than complex small bone surgeries.
  • Above-knee surgery: This complex intervention typically costs 15-20% more than procedures on lower limb segments.
  • City hubs: Most surgeries occur in Istanbul, Ankara, and Bursa at accredited university hospitals.
  • Medical gear: Budgeting an extra amount is necessary if including high-spec sports prosthetic legs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing JCI-accredited hubs like Memorial Şişli Hospital or Anadolu Medical Center offers significant value. These centres provide multidisciplinary care, which is vital for complex limb surgery. Some clinics, like Lokman Hekim, offer fixed-price packages that include a four-day hospital stay. This helps Australians manage their budget without worrying about daily room rates or basic diagnostic fees.

All the staff members made me feel very comfortable
All the staff members made me feel very comfortable. As I traveled on my own, I felt well cared for and looked after in the clinic, and the included hotel was basic but nice. The procedure went well. I was initially a bit unsure about the schedule for my follow-up appointments, but the team checked on me daily through WhatsApp, which was reassuring. My surgeon explained why the transconjunctival technique, leaving no visible scar, was the right choice for me, and the surgery was performed under local anesthesia with sedation. So far, my recovery is going about as expected. One piece of advice: bring a V-pillow. The clinic only mentioned I'd need to sleep upright on the day, and having one made my hotel stay much more comfortable.

I was bit unsure of the days I would be going back to the clinic for a check up and for further treatment but I was checked on through WhatsApp daily and felt reassured knowing that I could contact them at any time if I felt unwell.

The entire process has been so smooth
What really put me at ease was the conversation with my surgeon. She took the time to show me before and after photos, explained what result to realistically expect from the wedge method on the labia minora and made me feel comfortable discussing my concerns. The entire process has been so smooth. I'm feeling better than expected right now. The clinic support has been great—they've stayed in touch, gave me a clear aftercare guide, and were always easy to reach. Plus, there were no additional expenses at all. My advice is simple: do your research, and if you have any questions, ask the coordinator. They are only too happy to help.
Excellent communication with the coordinator. Everything was booked for me - the procedure, hotel & ALL the transfers. I didn't have to worry about anything once I was in Turkey.
Nothing negative to report.

FAQ about Amputation in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How can I verify the safety and accreditation of a clinic or hospital for amputation care in Turkey?

Verify safety by checking for Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and a Turkish Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate. Ensure surgeons hold board certifications. These include the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) or the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (FEBOPRAS).

  • Hospital accreditation: Memorial Şişli Hospital was the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation.
  • Ministry licensing: Verify the clinic holds a Government International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate.
  • Surgeon boards: Dr Burak Özkan is a Fellow of the European Board (FEBOPRAS).
  • Prosthetic expertise: Clinics like Luxmed Protez use specialists certified by Ottobock and Össur.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Major Turkish hospital groups like Memorial and Medical Park often manage over 200,000 patients annually. This high volume across multiple departments usually indicates more robust emergency infrastructure and ICU support than standalone clinics. Choosing a facility with on-site rehabilitation and prosthetic services, such as Luxmed Protez, ensures a seamless transition from surgery to mobility.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest verifying the hospital and surgeon separately from the clinic brand. They recommend checking if aftercare plans include remote follow-up via WhatsApp once back in Australia.

How soon after an amputation can a patient travel to or begin rehabilitation in Turkey?

Patients can typically travel to Turkey for rehabilitation 4 to 8 weeks after an amputation. They can do so once surgical wounds have fully closed. For surgery in Turkey, patients must wait 1 to 2 weeks before flying home. This reduces the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

  • Wound healing: Wounds must be fully closed without infection before intensive physical therapy begins.
  • Surgical window: Patients having surgery in Turkey require 7–14 days before commercial air travel.
  • Rehabilitation stay: Specialists often recommend 4–6 weeks for gait training and prosthetic fitting.
  • Prosthetic timing: Initial prosthetic fitting usually occurs after swelling subsides, typically 8 weeks post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that specialised centres like Luxmed Protez Clinic complete prosthetic fitting and initial training. They do this in one week. Standard rehab takes longer. However, these high-volume clinics use Ottobock-certified prosthetists to speed up the process for international patients. This is significantly faster than the 10-week recovery often seen in general hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Many patients in Turkey begin inpatient rehabilitation within 2 weeks of surgery. They achieve mobility using temporary prosthetics within six weeks. They emphasise that wounds heal quickly. However, waiting for swelling to subside is vital before starting long-distance travel.

What do medical tourism packages for prosthetic care in Turkey usually include?

Medical tourism packages for prosthetic care in Turkey offer comprehensive surgical, technical, and logistical support. These bundles typically include the prosthetic hardware, custom fabrication, intensive gait training, and 5-star accommodation. Clinics often feature Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. They use globally recognised components from brands like Ottobock and Össur.

  • Prosthetic hardware: Includes bionic or mechanical limbs from major international brands.
  • Custom fitting: Covers digital casting, 3D gait analysis, and socket fabrication for precise alignment.
  • Rehabilitation sessions: Includes dedicated physiotherapy to master balance and muscle control for new limbs.
  • Luxury accommodation: Often bundles 5-star hotel stays for the patient and a companion.
  • VIP logistics: Provides airport transfers and daily transit between the hotel and rehabilitation centre.
  • English-speaking support: Dedicated coordinators assist with appointments and provide translation during medical consultations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many centres offer prosthetics, specialised clinics like Luxmed Protez in Istanbul complete the entire fitting through to gait training within one week. This condensed timeline is particularly valuable for Australian patients, as it significantly reduces the total time away from home while ensuring full functional independence before departure.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the all-inclusive nature of Turkish packages, particularly the inclusion of VIP transfers and 5-star accommodation near the clinics. Many recommend confirming an itemised list in writing to ensure hotel nights and remote follow-up via WhatsApp are clearly included.
