Umbilical hernia repair in Turkey typically costs from AUD $2,085 to AUD $4,169. Patients from Australia save around 53% compared to local private costs of approximately AUD $6,810. Packages often include surgeon fees, general anaesthesia, hospitalisation, and airport-hotel transfers.

  • Laparoscopic repair: typically adds 20–30% to the cost compared to open surgery.
  • Mesh placement: often costs approximately 10–15% more for strengthened abdominal wall support.
  • Pediatric surgery: prices remain competitive and usually include specialized pediatric consultation and follow-up.
  • Luxury inclusions: some packages feature nutritionist-planned meals and 24-hour private nursing services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing an experienced specialist can significantly improve your results. Surgeons like Assoc. Prof. Cemal Kara have performed over 6,000 procedures. For the best value, consider Istanbul-based packages that bundle high-end care with convenience. Memorial Şişli Hospital offers laparoscopic packages around A$11,200. Alternatively, Turan Turan Health Group in Bursa provides laparoscopic options starting near A$4,900, demonstrating that regional centers offer excellent savings.

My surgeon was excellent
My biggest concern before the trip was unexpected additional costs, and unfortunately that concern proved to be justified. My additional costs for two lymphatic drainage sessions, an anti-thrombosis injection for the return flight and meals at the hotel amounted to €450. My advice to future patients is therefore: you should definitely clarify any additional costs that may arise. Apart from that, my surgeon was excellent. He marked the areas very carefully before the operation, which put me at ease. Over 4 litres of fat were removed during the Vaser liposuction, and my recovery has so far gone as expected. The clinic provided me with good support afterwards, was always available and gave me clear aftercare guidelines. If your language skills are not sufficient, you should definitely ask for an interpreter.
So, in the end, the whole package was just right. The coordinator was always on hand for me, organised everything she could and also cleared up any uncertainties. She was absolutely brilliant. The doctor was very friendly, but always rather curt. Because of the language barrier, it wasn’t that easy to sort out many things straight away. That usually only happened afterwards in the coordinator’s WhatsApp group. The transfer and the hotel we’d chosen were also great, and above all, everyone was friendly. The clinic was OK. The rooms didn’t feel as sterile as they do in Germany, but the medical care was very good. Even with the language barrier, the nursing staff always made an effort to chat with you. It was a good thing I had Google Translate.
I was promised a detailed preliminary consultation, but this did not take place. An interpreter on site would have been very helpful. I would recommend a longer stay of at least 10 days. My journey home was anything but pleasant. The wound drains were removed on the day of departure, even though there was still too much wound fluid being produced. On arriving in Germany, I went straight to A&E to rule out any more serious complications.

The surgery went brilliantly
I sincerely want to thank the Bookimed team for their assistance. I had a challenging task: finding a specialized surgeon with expertise in hand finger surgery. The Bookimed specialists were very attentive to my request and helped me find the right doctor in Turkey. I was facing a serious operation on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers of my left hand. The procedure was complex: a bone graft from the iliac crest was placed, and osteotomy was performed on several fingers with pin fixation. The surgery went brilliantly. Surgeon Levent Yalcin personally examined me afterward, which was very important. The staff at the Group Florence Nightingale Hospitals clinic was very polite. It was nice that there were no additional expenses, as the clinic provided everything necessary for the stay.
I would like to sincerely thank the Bookimed team for their assistance in finding a clinic and doctor in Turkey. I faced a fairly complex task: it was necessary to find a highly specialized surgeon with expertise in treating and performing surgery on finger joints. Finding the right specialist on my own proved to be challenging—there is a lot of information available, but it was essential to select a doctor with the necessary specialization and experience. The specialists at Bookimed paid close attention to my request. They did not just suggest a few clinic options, but helped me navigate the information, chose an appropriate medical institution, and found a surgeon with the required profile in Turkey. I was provided with a personal coordinator, Olga. I especially want to highlight the promptness, attentive service, and individualized approach. They remained in contact with me at all stages, answered questions, assisted with organizational matters, and provided necessary information. This was particularly important to me because dealing with health issues and upcoming surgical treatment, one wants to ensure they are turning to reliable professionals and are in safe hands. Upon arrival in Istanbul, everything was top-notch—transfer service, interpreter, coordinators, doctor consultations, and surgery preparation were all meticulously planned, leaving us with no worries. The surgery went excellently; even before the procedure, they ensured I was well-prepared. I didn't even notice how I ended up in the operating room. I woke up post-operation in the ward where my husband was waiting for me. The excellent surgeon, Levent Yalçın, conducted the surgery, accompanied me at all stages, and always answered questions. The staff at Group Florence Nightingale Hospitals was very polite and responsive. They regularly checked on my well-being, measured blood pressure, and temperature. The conditions in the room were like a 5-star hotel, or even better, with additional amenities available in the restroom for patients. I would also like to thank Alisher, the international department coordinator, for his kindness and responsiveness, and interpreter Darya for her support and assistance in communicating with the doctors and staff.

All the staff members made me feel very comfortable
All the staff members made me feel very comfortable. As I traveled on my own, I felt well cared for and looked after in the clinic, and the included hotel was basic but nice. The procedure went well. I was initially a bit unsure about the schedule for my follow-up appointments, but the team checked on me daily through WhatsApp, which was reassuring. My surgeon explained why the transconjunctival technique, leaving no visible scar, was the right choice for me, and the surgery was performed under local anesthesia with sedation. So far, my recovery is going about as expected. One piece of advice: bring a V-pillow. The clinic only mentioned I'd need to sleep upright on the day, and having one made my hotel stay much more comfortable.

I was bit unsure of the days I would be going back to the clinic for a check up and for further treatment but I was checked on through WhatsApp daily and felt reassured knowing that I could contact them at any time if I felt unwell.

The entire process has been so smooth
What really put me at ease was the conversation with my surgeon. She took the time to show me before and after photos, explained what result to realistically expect from the wedge method on the labia minora and made me feel comfortable discussing my concerns. The entire process has been so smooth. I'm feeling better than expected right now. The clinic support has been great—they've stayed in touch, gave me a clear aftercare guide, and were always easy to reach. Plus, there were no additional expenses at all. My advice is simple: do your research, and if you have any questions, ask the coordinator. They are only too happy to help.
Excellent communication with the coordinator. Everything was booked for me - the procedure, hotel & ALL the transfers. I didn't have to worry about anything once I was in Turkey.
Nothing negative to report.

FAQ about Umbilical hernia repair in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What surgical techniques are used for umbilical hernia repair in Turkey?

Surgeons in Turkey perform umbilical hernia repair using laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and traditional open techniques. Most procedures include high-grade mesh reinforcement to prevent recurrence. Specialists at JCI-accredited facilities often complete these surgeries as day cases. This lets patients return home or to their hotel within 24 hours.

  • Laparoscopic repair: Surgeons use three small incisions and glue, typically reducing postoperative pain.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: High-precision systems like Da Vinci assist with complex or recurrent repairs.
  • Open mesh repair: Standard for larger defects, providing direct access to reposition herniated tissue.
  • Suture-only repair: Common for small defects around 1 cm to avoid using synthetic mesh.
  • Paediatric repair: Specialised clinics like Liv Hospital Vadistanbul offer graft-based repairs for children.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Australian clinics default to open surgery for cost reasons, Turkish packages often include laparoscopic or robotic options for A$4,800 to A$12,400. Choosing a surgeon with Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) credentials, such as Dr Hakan Gok, means the highest standard of abdominal wall reconstruction.

Patient Consensus: Confirm if the surgeon prefers preperitoneal mesh placement to keep the implant away from the bowel. Patients note that laparoscopic gas can cause minor discomfort, but the tiny incisions heal very quickly.

What is the success rate and risk of recurrence for umbilical hernia repair in Turkey?

Umbilical hernia repair in Turkey delivers success rates between 90% and 95%. Tension-free mesh techniques significantly reduce recurrence risk compared to traditional sutures. Board-certified surgeons in JCI-accredited facilities commonly perform these procedures. They use laparoscopic or open methods for durable abdominal wall support.

  • Technique impact: Mesh repair reduces recurrence risks to approximately 1%–4% in modern practice.
  • Recurrence factors: Obesity, smoking and heavy lifting significantly increase the risk of repair failure.
  • Surgical expertise: Specialists like Dr Hakan Gok hold European Board certifications in abdominal wall surgery.
  • Small defects: Hernias under 2 cm typically see a success rate near 97%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics offer standard repairs. However, choosing a surgeon with European Board of Surgery (FEBS AWS) accreditation provides a major safety advantage. Dr Hakan Gok at Hernia Istanbul Clinic, for example, maintains a 99.5% success rate. This level of specialisation often means better mesh placement and lower chronic pain risks.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find mesh repairs provide much better stability than older suture methods. Most people return to light activities within 3 weeks. But this requires avoiding heavy lifting and following surgeon advice on core exercises.

Why choose Turkey for umbilical hernia repair?

Turkey offers umbilical hernia repair through specialist surgeons using advanced laparoscopic techniques at accredited facilities. International patients access general surgery departments in Istanbul and Izmir. These centres provide mesh-supported repairs with high success rates. All-inclusive packages often combine surgery, hospital stays, and airport transfers.

  • Specialist surgeons: Doctors often hold memberships in the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES).
  • Minimally invasive methods: Surgeons focus on laparoscopic techniques to reduce recovery time and scarring.
  • Certified facilities: Many hospitals maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation for safety standards.
  • Comprehensive packages: Fees typically cover preoperative tests, anaesthesia, hospital stay, and VIP transport.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish surgical centres often specialise in hernia repair as a primary service. This high volume leads to refined protocols for mesh placement. Many clinics include one night of hospital monitoring. This allows for immediate post-operative safety before hotel discharge.

Patient Consensus: Patients often mention the efficiency of the check-in and screening process in Turkey. The cleanliness of the private hospitals and the clear communication from coordinators are frequently highlighted. Most people appreciate the smooth transfers and the focus on comfort during recovery.

What types of umbilical hernia repair are available in Turkey?

Turkish clinics offer laparoscopic mesh repair, open mesh repair, and suture-only techniques for umbilical hernias. Specialists at JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul and Bursa use methods like the Da Vinci robotic system for complex cases. These procedures typically cost $1,500 to $3,000.

  • Laparoscopic mesh repair: Surgeons use small incisions and cameras to reinforce the abdominal wall.
  • Open mesh repair: Conventional surgery using synthetic mesh to significantly reduce hernia recurrence risks.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: High-precision repair at specialised centres like Memorial Göztepe Hospital using robotic systems.
  • Suture-only repair: Non-mesh technique reserved for small defects but carries higher recurrence rates.
  • Paediatric graft repair: Specialised surgical approach for children, available at centres like Liv Hospital Vadistanbul.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many choose Turkey for the A$4,800–A$5,300 all-inclusive packages, the real value lies in surgical credentials. Dr Hakan Gok is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery, meeting international standards for technical proficiency in complex abdominal wall reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find that laparoscopic mesh repair allows a faster return to daily movement. Many suggest confirming whether the surgeon recommends mesh or suture-only for their specific hernia size. Confirming the surgical plan in writing before travel means patients know exactly which technique will be used.

What is the recovery process like after umbilical hernia repair in Turkey?

Recovery in Turkey involves a 1-day hospital stay with most people returning to light activities within 10–14 days. Surgeons often use laparoscopic techniques to speed healing. Full recovery typically takes 6–8 weeks. Heavy lifting is restricted to protect the repair while tissue regains strength.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients stay 1 night for observation and pain management.
  • Initial recovery: First 3 days are most difficult with significant discomfort and limited mobility.
  • Activity limits: Avoid lifting over 7 kg for 6 weeks to prevent hernia recurrence.
  • Return to work: Desk-based employees usually return to duties within 1–2 weeks.
  • Long-term healing: Energy levels may lag for 4 weeks as the body heals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many 1-day packages cost around A$4,800 to A$9,300. Hospitals like Anadolu Medical Center provide personal coordinators to help manage local logistics. Choosing a centre using robotic systems often results in less post-operative pain. The Da Vinci at Memorial Bahçelievler offers this benefit compared to traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Turkish clinics provide excellent support, but patients should use stool softeners early to avoid straining the abdominal repair. Pacing themselves is essential, as exhaustion often lasts longer than the initial surgical pain.

Do clinics in Turkey use surgical mesh for an umbilical hernia repair?

Clinics in Turkey use surgical mesh as a standard for adult umbilical hernia repair. This reinforces the abdominal wall. Surgeons typically use biocompatible synthetic mesh for hernias larger than 2 cm. This practice significantly reduces recurrence risks. It is favoured over suture-only techniques in JCI-accredited facilities across Istanbul and Bursa.

  • Repair techniques: Surgeons perform open mesh repair, laparoscopic mesh repair, or stitch-only suture repair.
  • Mesh threshold: Specialists often recommend mesh if the hernia defect is roughly 2 cm or larger.
  • Recurrence rates: Using mesh lowers the chance of the hernia returning, especially for large defects.
  • Surgical approach: Modern laparoscopic methods use small incisions, leading to faster recovery and minimal scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Australian clinics default to mesh, Turkish specialists like Dr Hakan Gok offer tailored choices. Data shows Memorial Health Group clinics provide distinct price tiers for suture-only versus mesh repairs. This allows patients with small hernias to avoid foreign material when medically appropriate.

Patient Consensus: Turkish surgeons often decide on mesh based on whether a finger fits the defect. Most patients report smooth recoveries in Turkey. They feel more secure knowing mesh prevents future hernia recurrences.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for umbilical hernia repair?

Most patients spend 7 to 10 days in Turkey for umbilical hernia repair. This timeframe covers preoperative tests, the surgery, a 1-day hospital stay, and initial recovery. Staying for at least a week allows a specialist to conduct a follow-up examination before the flight home.

  • Hospital stay: Surgeons typically require 1 night of inpatient monitoring for most adult procedures.
  • Initial recovery: The first 1–3 days are the most intensive regarding pain and mobility.
  • Clinical milestone: Significant improvement usually occurs by day 4 or 5 after the operation.
  • Travel window: Most people fly home safely 5–7 days after a laparoscopic mesh repair.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Paediatric patients follow a similar surgical timeline. However, packages at centres like Liv Hospital Vadistanbul often bundle a full 6-day hotel stay. This longer duration allows careful monitoring for children. It ensures they are fit for the long-haul flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Expect the first 3 days to be the toughest for movement. Patients in Turkey suggest having help with basic tasks. They also recommend waiting a full week before flying home. This ensures a comfortable journey.

What should I prepare for my medical trip to Turkey for umbilical hernia repair?

Patients should prepare for an umbilical hernia repair in Turkey by organising their medical records, loose clothing, and a recovery plan for their return flight. Patients typically spend 1 day in hospital. They need a 5–7 day total stay in Turkey to recover before flying back to Australia.

  • Medical documentation: Patients should bring previous scans and a GP fitness-to-travel certificate for their surgical team.
  • Packing essentials: Patients should pack loose-fitting trousers and a small pillow to protect their abdomen during travel.
  • Recovery setup: Patients should organise assistance for the first 72 hours to help with sitting and standing.
  • Thrombosis prevention: Patients should plan for seated leg exercises and frequent aisle walks on the long-haul flight home.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Australian patients often assume all packages are all-inclusive, but inclusions vary significantly by clinic. While Turan Turan Health Group includes VIP transfers, Büyük Anadolu Hospitals offers nutritionist-prepared meals. Patients should always confirm their package details. It should include the full 2–3 nights of recommended hotel recovery after discharge.

Patient Consensus: Patients should use ice packs for three days to manage swelling. They should also start gentle walking immediately. They should pack stool softeners to avoid straining. They should confirm all package inclusions in writing before departing for Turkey.

How long will I need to stay in Turkey for an umbilical hernia repair?

Most patients spend 5 to 7 days in Turkey for an umbilical hernia repair. This timeframe includes preoperative tests and 1 night in hospital. It also includes a follow-up visit on day 7. While some are cleared for air travel earlier, staying a full week allows for safe post-operative monitoring.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients spend 1 night in hospital for initial post-operative monitoring.
  • Clinical follow-up: Surgeons like Dr Hakan Gok require a check-up before clearing patients for travel.
  • Surgical techniques: Options include laparoscopic keyhole surgery or open repair, often using supportive mesh.
  • Travel readiness: Most patients feel safe to fly 5 days after the hernia procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many basic quotes only cover the surgery, comprehensive packages in Istanbul often include 6 hotel nights. This matching of the hotel stay to the recovery window is crucial. It keeps patients near their surgeon during the highest-risk days for swelling.

Patient Consensus: The first 3 days in Turkey are the most challenging for mobility. Patients suggest a 2-week window is best for a comfortable flight home without abdominal pain.

What is included in an all-inclusive umbilical hernia repair package in Turkey?

All-inclusive umbilical hernia repair packages in Turkey typically bundle several services. These include the surgical procedure, pre-operative screenings, and hospitalisation. These packages frequently include JCI-accredited facility fees, synthetic mesh implants, and VIP airport-to-hotel transfers. They also include multilingual coordinator support to manage logistics for international patients.

  • Medical screenings: Includes blood panels, ECGs, and chest X-rays before the operation.
  • Surgical techniques: Covers open or laparoscopic repairs performed by board-certified general surgeons.
  • Hospital stay: Most plans provide 1 night in a private hospital room.
  • Logistics service: Provides VIP ground transport between the airport, hotel, and surgical centre.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows a significant value gap between basic and premium packages. Entry-level options cost around A$4,800. However, some mid-range packages, like those at Büyük Anadolu Hospitals, include nutritionist-approved meals and 4-star hotel stays. Patients should verify if the mesh brand and 24-hour nursing are specifically bundled.

Patient Consensus: All-inclusive in Turkey is a marketing term that varies between clinics. Patients find it best to get an itemised list. This list should cover meals, companion stays, and medications to avoid extra billing.

What should I bring or prepare before travelling to Turkey for hernia surgery?

Preparing for umbilical hernia repair in Turkey requires coordinating medical records, loose clothing, and recovery essentials. Patients should bring recent imaging, stop blood thinners, and pack slip-on shoes to avoid bending. Selecting JCI-accredited facilities provides international safety standards for mesh or laparoscopic procedures.

  • Medical documentation: Carry printed CT or MRI scans and current medication lists.
  • Clinical clothing: Pack loose-fitting trousers and button-down shirts to protect abdominal incisions.
  • Flight safety: Wear compression stockings on long-haul flights to prevent blood clots.
  • Post-op comfort: Use stool softeners to manage constipation and gas after laparoscopic surgery.
  • Local support: Secure a GP in Australia for wound monitoring after returning home.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many centres involve a 1-day hospital stay. However, packages from Turan Turan Health Group or Büyük Anadolu Hospitals often include 2–6 days of hotel recovery. This extra time is vital for managing residual CO2 gas pain. It helps patients be ready for the long flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Travellers suggest using a heating pad for shoulder pain. They also recommend keeping a written list of questions for the surgeon. Practical support at home is essential. The first two weeks of recovery require significant rest, both in Turkey and Australia.
