Thanks to the successful operation, I started walking without a limp almost as soon as I tried doing so without crutches
Before the operation, I was most worried about a possible difference in leg length, but now they feel exactly the same. The operation was performed via an anterior approach using a Stryker implant. A huge thank you to the wonderful doctor, Professor Olcay Güler. He is always positive, a pleasure to talk to, and uses modern techniques as well as robotic surgery for procedures like this. Direct anterior access is the best option for those who want a faster and better recovery, and there are very few specialists who use this modern method. On the 7th day after the operation, I had already started walking without crutches, even though I hadn’t rushed my recovery; the doctors do recommend walking with crutches for two weeks. Thanks to the successful operation, I started walking without a limp almost as soon as I tried doing so without crutches. I should note that I deliberately didn’t walk with just one crutch; I used both, but walked with them using the Nordic walking technique with poles. I think this also helped me avoid limping straight away. If anyone needs joint replacement surgery, I highly recommend Professor Olcay Güler and the Memorial Şişli Clinic; a good doctor is the key to a successful return to normal life. And of course, a huge thank you to the Bookimed team and personally to coordinator Sergey, who patiently selected the clinic and doctor for me! In the early stages of recovery, the hardest thing for me is getting in and out of the car. A tip for future patients: prepare comfortable trousers without elastic at the bottom in advance, slip-on shoes, and a special device for putting on compression garments and socks – a butler or glider – will also come in very handy, but only if you’re doing everything without assistance.

There are no downsides, just one suggestion: to produce a short leaflet for the clinic’s patients setting out post-operative restrictions, initial exercises, and exercises for further rehabilitation six weeks later, when most restrictions will have been lifted.

I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic
At the Turan Turan Clinic, I had total hip replacement surgeries on both legs almost simultaneously, two days apart. The operation was categorised as complicated. From the very first days of my stay in the clinic until my discharge I was really surrounded by sincere care and attention of the doctor and medical staff and interpreter. I was placed in a very comfortable ward with everything I needed. The interpreter and assistant in the person of Eldar did not leave me a step and helped with translation, consulted, gave useful advice and literally led me by the hand to the doctors where I was examined, from the X-ray room to the anaesthesiologist before the operation. Preparation for the operation, collection of analyses, their study and consultation with doctor Kayhan Turan took little time. Everything went promptly. The surgery was performed by the head doctor Kayhan Turan himself, who has vast experience in orthopaedic surgeries. With his light hand and high level of professionalism, the two surgeries two days apart were very easy. Smith & Nephew prostheses were fitted. Both operations were performed under spinal anaesthesia, which in my case completely eliminated the unpleasant stage of coming out of anaesthesia. I was conscious during the operations. Subsequent rehabilitation took place in a hospital ward, where special medical simulators were used along with exercises to develop the joint and vessels. I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic.

I found the surgical staff and nurses in operating theatre to be extremely understanding and helpful. I was happy with the surgical procedure but would have liked a little more post-op feedback from the surgeon. Overall, though I was more than satisfied. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the treatment which I received from the nursing staff, especially at night, although I subsequently found out that they are very short staffed while not having at least one English speaking nurse on duty day or night.
Procedure was very good on the day of surgery. Friendly and helpful medical coordinator Friendly nurses during the day. However there was not even one English speaking nurse during every day and every night. The only means of communicating was by phone translator which became tiresome and frustrating.
There needs to be better understanding between the nursing staff and patients. Despite best efforts it all became overwhelming and frustrating. I don’t know why but it was difficult to inform the staff that I was vegetarian. Twice I needed to change the capither myself - seemingly because nurses see it below their station so need to find a nursing assistant to empty the capither bag. To summarise - the medical coordinator was extremely helpful; the care and help by surgical staff and theatre nursing staff was very good. However the treatment from many of the nurses left something to be desired.

Dr
It's now been about 1 1/2 months post surgery and I am pleased with the progress of my recovery. It seems that the implant and hip have aligned themselves nicely with the rest of the leg and foot . I can walk quite well. It seems that improving the strength in my leg will lead to greater recovery. I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism , knowledge and concern of all people involved ; especially Booki Med med coordinator Dr. Olha who exhibited limitless patience and concern for my problems. The hospital was first rate and those within, I felt, were truly concerned with my situation

FAQ about ALMIS - minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What exactly is ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty and how is it different from standard hip replacement in Turkey?

ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey is a muscle-sparing total hip replacement technique using a smaller 7–10 cm incision. It causes less soft tissue damage than standard hip replacements, helping patients move sooner and with less pain after surgery. Recovery still needs careful rehab.

  • Muscle preservation: ALMIS avoids cutting major hip muscles, unlike standard surgery.
  • Incision size: ALMIS incisions are much smaller, reducing scarring and blood loss.
  • Recovery speed: Patients often walk within days and have shorter hospital stays.
  • Post-op care: ALMIS reduces strict bending limits but requires disciplined rehab.
  • Turkey clinics: JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital specialise in ALMIS.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Most Turkish ALMIS surgeons perform this technically demanding surgery frequently, improving safety and outcomes. Clinics like Memorial group ensure quality care with JCI and ISO certifications. Checking surgery packages for included follow-up and physio is a smart move.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey say ALMIS means smaller scars and quicker walking after surgery. They warn early mobility is good but sticking to rehab rules remains crucial. Follow-up care clarity helps Australians avoid surprises post-op.

What are the main benefits of having ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey?

ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey offers muscle-sparing surgery with less pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery. JCI-certified hospitals ensure high safety and care standards. Experienced surgeons use precise techniques to reduce complications and hospital stays. Medical packages often include hospital stay and transfers for convenience.

  • Muscle sparing: avoids cutting muscles, speeds up functional recovery.
  • Lower pain and scarring: less soft tissue damage from the anterior approach.
  • Shorter hospital stay: early discharge common due to minimally invasive technique.
  • JCI-accredited clinics: ensure high standards of care and patient safety.
  • Experienced surgeons: many with advanced training in hip arthroplasty in Istanbul.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Most Turkish clinics bundle hospital stay and transfers in packages, which makes medical travel simpler. Clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital have 4.6 ratings and JCI accreditation, reflecting trusted quality for Australian patients. Surgeons often hold European credentials, ensuring up-to-date techniques and good outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients praise faster surgery access and cheaper costs than Australia. They value packaged hospital stays and transfers. Australians appreciate shorter waiting times and clear aftercare plans when returning home for follow-up.

What are the risks associated with ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey?

ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey carries risks like Trendelenburg gait, infection, dislocation, and fractures. Surgeon skill and hospital quality directly affect outcomes. Minimally invasive techniques help recovery but can still cause nerve or artery injuries, leg length differences, and abnormal bone growth.

  • Trendelenburg gait: Weak hip muscles cause limp in over 7% of cases.
  • Infection risk: Lower than open surgery but still possible after the procedure.
  • Dislocation rate: Around 1.3% risk of artificial joint moving out of place.
  • Fractures: Femur cracks can happen during implant fitting.
  • Greater trochanter avulsion: Muscle attachment may be injured in 1.3% of cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey’s top hospitals like Memorial Şişli hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, showing high safety standards. Packages often cover hemiarthroplasty with expert surgeons experienced in minimal invasive hip surgery. Careful choice of surgeon reduces risks unique to ALMIS and improves recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey say aftercare is key, especially once back in Australia. They recommend planning longer recovery at home and arranging clear follow-up with both local GPs and overseas doctors to avoid issues like swelling or blood clots.

How long does recovery take after ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey?

Recovery after ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey usually takes up to 6 months for near full recovery, with 85-90% improvement by 3 months. The first 3 days post-op are most challenging, with full healing and return to high-impact activities taking up to 1 year.

  • Initial recovery phase: First 3 days post-surgery are the most difficult.
  • Mobility progress: Most patients walk with assistance within 24-48 hours.
  • Rehabilitation period: Steady mobility and pain relief by 3 months, near complete by 6 months.
  • Full healing: Can take up to 12 months for complete recovery and stamina rebuild.
  • Hospital stay: Typically 1-2 days, with ongoing physiotherapy after discharge.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital with JCI accreditation offer specialised orthopaedic care, ensuring safe short hospital stays and structured rehab support. Surgeons perform thousands of hip arthroplasties here, enabling skilled handling of recovery challenges. Turkish centres commonly provide international patient services for post-op care planning.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report the toughest days are right after surgery, needing walking aids for weeks. By 3-6 months, pain improves greatly. Recovery takes time and patience, so good local support is key. Australian patients should plan for this gradual pace before returning home.

Is ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty better than traditional hip replacement surgery, particularly in Turkey?

ALMIS (anterolateral minimally invasive surgery) often offers a faster recovery than traditional hip replacement in Turkey. It uses smaller incisions and preserves muscles, leading to less pain and shorter hospital stays. Turkish clinics frequently use advanced techniques, including robotic assistance, for effective results.

  • Surgery approach: ALMIS uses a 7–10 cm incision, smaller than traditional 20–30 cm cuts.
  • Muscle preservation: ALMIS spares tendons and ligaments, reducing tissue damage.
  • Recovery speed: Patients often walk within hours and leave hospital in 1–2 days.
  • Clinic quality: Many Turkish hospitals hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Surgeon skill: Success relies on surgeon experience; some perform 10,000+ joint replacements.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey’s top orthopaedic surgeons, like Dr Erman Cekic with 10,000+ hip replacements, combine ALMIS and robotic tools. Clinics such as Memorial Şişli Hospital offer JCI-accredited care attracting 2,000+ international patients yearly, showing strong outcomes depend on expert hands and facility quality, not just the technique.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight faster walking and shorter hospital stays with ALMIS, but note recovery depends on surgeon skill. Many value clear communication before surgery and ongoing care coordinated with their Australian GP for smooth healing after returning home.

Why do patients choose Turkey for ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty?

Patients choose Turkey for ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty due to experienced surgeons, Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals, and savings of nearly 50% compared to Australia. The procedure benefits from minimally invasive techniques that reduce tissue damage and speed up recovery.

  • Expert surgeons: Istanbul’s Hisar Hospital Intercontinental staff perform thousands of arthroplasties.
  • Hospital quality: Leading facilities like Memorial Şişli have JCI and ISO accreditations.
  • Cost savings: Procedure prices range from $11,300 to $17,700, about 69% less than Australian costs.
  • Hemiarthroplasty option: Available at multiple Memorial clinics in Istanbul for a set price of A$15,450.
  • All-inclusive packages: Many clinics offer preoperative tests and consultations within packages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey holds the top global rank for ALMIS procedures with 393 clinics and nearly 2,000 Bookimed requests. Clinics with JCI accreditation like Lokman Hekim and Memorial attract international patients by combining quality, surgeon experience, and transparent package pricing. Checking surgeon credentials and package details is key for Aussies.

Patient Consensus: Australians appreciate Turkey’s lower prices and quick surgery access. Many find medical travel packages convenient for including transfers and care coordination. Patients stress the importance of clear post-op plans and working with local GPs for rehabilitation after returning.

How can I find a qualified surgeon for ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey?

Finding a qualified surgeon for ALMIS minimal invasive hip arthroplasty in Turkey requires selecting board-certified orthopaedic specialists with experience in this exact technique. Prioritise clinics accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) and surgeons with fellowship training in arthroplasty, such as those at Memorial or Hisar Hospital in Istanbul.

  • JCI accreditation: ensures hospitals like Memorial Şişli maintain international safety standards.
  • Surgeon experience: Dr Erman Cekic at OrtoCare performed 10,000+ joint replacements.
  • Fellowship training: Dr Erkam Komurcu completed a fellowship at UCLA Spine Center.
  • Specialisation focus: surgeons must list hip arthroplasty and minimal invasive techniques.
  • Research and publications: look for surgeons with peer-reviewed work on minimal invasive hip surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish orthopaedic surgeons with international training and many published articles, like Dr Komurcu and Dr Sokucu, tend to work in JCI-accredited Istanbul clinics. Some clinics with strong reputations, such as Memorial and Hisar Hospital, have multiple surgeons skilled in ALMIS, offering Australians confidence in expertise and safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey value surgeons who clearly explain ALMIS steps and implant choices. They recommend verifying surgeon experience and getting written aftercare plans before booking. Australian patients highlight the importance of follow-up support post-flight home.
