This created an impression of a professional and well-prepared approach
Our son is 6 years old and has been diagnosed with ASD. We arrived at Memorial Şişli Clinic on Monday. On the same day, we had a consultation with Dr. Betül Tavil. The doctor carefully examined our son and immediately began asking questions, to which she seemed to already have some answers. This created an impression of a professional and well-prepared approach. After the consultation, the doctor recommended stem cell therapy. With our consent, the cells were ordered immediately, considering they would be delivered to the clinic within three days. On the same day, we provided four vials of blood. Three days later, the stem cell administration procedure took place. The total dose consisted of 50 million cells: 1% was administered into the spinal cord, and the remainder was given via intravenous infusion. The procedure itself lasted approximately 10–15 minutes and went smoothly. Afterward, a supportive IV drip was administered to the child. Overall, we stayed in the hospital for about 4–4.5 hours, after which we were discharged. At this point, we have observed no side effects in the child.
Prompt service, and the doctor, Betul Tavil, is very personable and I confidently say she is truly a professional in her field.
About Bookimed service
Our experience collaborating with Bookimed was very pleasant. Communication was easy and clear — our messages were always answered promptly, all issues were explained in detail, and helpful advice was provided. When necessary, Bookimed representatives contacted us by phone, which was particularly convenient and reassuring. It felt like they genuinely wanted to help us, rather than just respond formally. Thank you to the Bookimed team for your support, attentiveness, and human approach. We are left with only positive impressions.

They examined the pediatrician, the doctor is very good, but the main task was not solved, these are vaccinations for the child. Bookimed should have asked about this issue and informed that vaccinations are given only to Turkish citizens or foreigners with a residence permit

The only thing I was lucky about was the interpreter Natalia, who is really empathetic and responsible. A good anaesthesiologist. Then there is one disappointment. Someone may be lucky with the doctors in this clinic, but we expected different results.

Excellent support in the general WhatsApp chat from Hamid and in a separate chat from Saida and Alexey
We went for the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine. Excellent support in the general WhatsApp chat from Hamid and in a separate chat from Saida and Alexey. They organized a free and very convenient transfer from the airport to the clinic, for which special thanks. The transfer was on time and at the agreed place with remote support of translators. At the clinic I met Maya, who speaks Russian very well, walked us through all the procedures, including registration, and also helped us pass the PCR test (I asked for it myself). Within 3-4 hours, all information about the PCR test and vaccination correctly appeared in the HES application

No positive statements identified
the hospital facilitator did not provide all the necessary information to the hotel: 1. there were no baby cots upon arrival. we had to ask ourselves 2. we made explicit requests that we need breakfast. however the next day we were told only rooms were booked. No breakfast.
the short hospital stay
the indifferent attitude of the nurses...no smiles, no empathy, no children's meal, lunch served at 2.30pm for patients' parents

FAQ about Pediatrics in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How can I verify the qualifications of a Turkish paediatrician or surgeon for my child's treatment?

Verify Turkish paediatricians by checking professional titles, such as 'Prof. Dr.' or 'Uzm. Dr.'. Confirm hospital accreditations like JCI. Specialist surgeons also hold national board certifications. Many leading Turkish doctors complete international fellowships at major medical centres in the United States or Western Europe.

  • Professional titles: Uzm. Dr. indicates a specialist. Op. Dr. identifies a qualified paediatric surgeon.
  • Board certification: Top specialists hold TÜYK (Turkish Medical Specialties Qualification Board) or European Board credentials.
  • Hospital standards: Memorial Şişli Hospital and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental maintain strict JCI safety protocols.
  • Senior expertise: Professors like Dr Sertac Cicek hold US medical licences and extensive international clinical training.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Look for senior doctors with the 'Prof. Dr.' title who have completed international fellowships. For example, Dr Sertac Cicek at Liv Hospital Vadistanbul trained at the Mayo Clinic and Texas Heart Institute. These specialists often handle the most complex paediatric cases. They combine local expertise with prestigious global surgical experience.

Patient Consensus: Parents in Turkey appreciate how doctors like Dr Betul Tavil conduct thorough consultations. They provide clear treatment maps. Families also find that dedicated interpreters help clarify complex medical details during their child's hospital stay.

What are the legal requirements regarding medical consent for minors having surgery in Turkey?

Turkish law requires legal representatives – usually parents or guardians – to provide written medical consent for any person under 18. This framework follows the Turkish Civil Code and Patient Rights Regulation. Minors cannot legally sign elective surgical consent forms in Turkey.

  • Legal adulthood: Turkey sets the age of majority at 18 for medical decisions.
  • Parental signing: A guardian must sign informed consent documents before any surgical intervention.
  • Language access: Clinics must provide consent forms in a language the guardian understands.
  • Emergency exception: Doctors may operate without prior consent if surgery is life-saving and urgent.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli have international departments to manage these legal requirements. They provide interpreters to help guardians fully understand the surgical risks before signing. This prevented delays for complex procedures like stem cell therapy or paediatric cardiac surgery.

Patient Consensus: Parents find the process smooth when using clinic-provided interpreters. They note it is important to confirm vaccination rules early. Some treatments have specific residency requirements in Turkey.

Can I obtain a medical opinion for my child before travelling to Turkey for care?

Parents can obtain a formal medical opinion for their child before travelling to Turkey. Leading Turkish specialists provide remote consultations over video or written reviews of medical records and scans. This process confirms the child is stable enough for travel. It also establishes a preliminary treatment plan.

  • Online consultations: Prof Dr Betul Tavil at Memorial Şişli offers remote reviews for paediatric haematology and oncology cases.
  • Expert MRI reviews: Specialists perform revision of MRI results for $100 to help confirm diagnoses from Australia.
  • Record evaluation: Paediatricians provide consultation with a treatment plan for $100 to $200 before booking.
  • Clinical affiliations: Anadolu Medical Center maintains an affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital, facilitating international medical standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish paediatric centres like Memorial Şişli and Anadolu Medical Center often share records digitally. Parents should request a written summary of the pre-travel opinion. This helps local Australian GPs understand the proposed Turkish protocols. This is particularly useful for complex cases like stem cell therapy or neurosurgery.

Patient Consensus: Parents find that providing detailed scans and blood test results beforehand leads to better consultations. They note that having empathetic interpreters, such as at NP Istanbul Brain Hospital, makes discussing care plans easier.

Which paediatric sub-specialties are available for complex conditions in Turkish hospitals?

Turkish hospitals provide specialised paediatric sub-specialties for complex conditions. These include neonatal cardiac surgery, bone marrow transplantation, and neuro-rehabilitation. JCI-accredited tertiary centres in Istanbul and Ankara manage rare multi-system disorders. Specialists use methods like hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and robotic rehabilitation.

  • Cardiac surgery: Dr Sertac Cicek at Liv Hospital performs complex neonatal heart repairs.
  • Haematology-oncology: Prof. Betul Tavil at Memorial Şişli manages leukaemia and bone marrow transplants.
  • Neurology: Dr Kursad Aydin at Medipol Mega specialises in childhood epilepsy and neurometabolic disorders.
  • Gastroenterology: Dr Makbule Eren at Liv Hospital Vadistanbul treats complex inflammatory bowel diseases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish paediatric units often concentrate expertise within specific hospitals. For instance, Memorial Şişli is a primary centre for paediatric bone marrow transplants. Liv Hospital Vadistanbul focuses on complex congenital surgeries. Australian families should seek clinics where the lead specialist is the department chair. This helps to provide direct oversight of complex cases.

Patient consensus: Families note that Turkish paediatric clinics provide prepared specialists who start diagnostic planning immediately. Many appreciate the easy logistics, including airport transfers and on-site interpreters. These services help reduce stress during intensive hospital stays.

How long will our family need to stay in Turkey for my child’s paediatric treatment?

Family stays for paediatric treatment in Turkey range from 3 days to over 6 weeks. This depends on the complexity of the surgery. Surgeons require 7–14 days for fit-to-fly clearance. Many Istanbul clinics hold JCI accreditation. At these clinics, pre-surgical assessments and imaging take 1–3 days.

  • Minor procedures: Outpatient treatments like circumcision or simple biopsies require 3–5 days total stay.
  • General surgery: Conditions like hernia repair or appendectomy usually need a 7–10 day stay.
  • Orthopaedic cases: Scoliosis surgery or clubfoot correction often require 2–3 weeks for recovery.
  • Complex care: Cardiac repairs and oncology treatments can extend the stay to 4 weeks or longer.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center often provide faster timelines. They use in-house labs and coordination teams to reduce waiting times for results. This clinic also maintains an affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital. This provides a clinical collaboration model familiar to many Australian families.

Patient Consensus: Parents found the process smooth and well-organised. They noted that stem cell procedures often allow discharge within hours. Families suggest booking flexible flights. Doctor reviews before travel provide peace of mind in Turkey.

How do Turkish hospitals accommodate the emotional and comfort needs of young children during medical procedures?

Turkish hospitals manage child comfort by using family-centred care and distractions. Facilities often require parents to stay during procedures to help the child feel secure. Specialists use medical play therapy to reduce fears before treatment. This creates a supportive, low-anxiety environment.

  • Psychological support: Dedicated programs use art and play therapy to help children process medical experiences.
  • Positive distractions: Digital media and local cartoons divert focus during care like injections.
  • Family integration: Nurses coach parents to act as soothing distractions during treatment.
  • Atraumatic environment: Medical teams use hidden instruments and non-drug pain management for infants.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center stands out with its Gold Certification for Excellence in Person-Centered Care. This accreditation signals a strong dedication to psychological needs. Their collaboration with Johns Hopkins helps these protocols meet global academic standards for child safety.

Patient Consensus: Parents found the medical staff professional and well-prepared. They often noted the smooth transition for children during stem cell procedures and vaccinations. Support from multilingual interpreters and dedicated coordinators helps families feel supported throughout their stay.
