How Much Does Total knee replacement (arthroplasty) revision Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Total knee replacement revision in Turkey typically costs from AUD $9,949 to AUD $15,716. The final investment depends on surgical complexity, the specific prosthesis brand, and whether robotic assistance is used. Patients from Australia save approximately 74% compared to local prices, which average AUD $50,321. Packages generally include hospital stays, nurse services, and airport transfers.

  • Robotic-assisted revision: typically adds 20–30% to the standard surgical fee for higher precision.
  • Specialised prostheses: high-end implants like Smith & Nephew Legion may increase the initial package price.
  • Surgical complexity: costs increase if the revision requires a two-stage approach to treat infections.
  • Destination hubs: most specialised revision surgeries are performed in Istanbul, Ankara, and Bursa.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a clinic with robotic capabilities often yields better long-term value despite the higher upfront cost. For example, Turan Turan Health Group provides robotic revision packages around A$20,800 using the Smith & Nephew Legion system. Meanwhile, surgeons like Dr. Erman Cekic have performed approximately 10,000 joint replacements, offering high-volume expertise that is essential for complex revision cases.

Data verified by Bookimed as of July 2026, based on patient requests and official quotes from 34 clinics worldwide. Median costs are based on real invoices (2025–2026) and updated monthly. Actual prices may vary.

If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day
If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day. My knee feels so much better than it did before the surgery, with much less pain. Of course, recovery isn't instant. The biggest challenge for me right now is some morning stiffness, but once I get moving it improves. The clinic staff and surgeon were professional and answered all my questions about the full replacement, which included the kneecap and a Smith & Nephew implant. I can already bend my knee past 90 degrees easily. It was the right decision.
The coordination of services and language translation was excellent. We felt very cared for and the team listened to our concerns and we had professional, sophisticated and compassionate care.
My one concern was the difficulty we had with one of the translators at the hospital in Istanbul but it was because of difficulty with communication and misunderstanding.

The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic
My father, 76 years old, had a knee replacement - Dr Olcay Guller. The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic. This is important because my father was very worried and doubtful, but after the first meeting with the doctor he was completely reassured. All pre-operative investigations were organised quickly. Preparation for the operation and the operation itself - everything went smoothly. The next morning my dad was already walking along the corridor with the help of crutches. Nurses and nurses are attentive and friendly, no remarks. Feeding was also excellent, even a lot. I was placed in a spacious ward with a large window and air conditioning. In the bathroom everything is adapted for immobile patients, spacious barrier-free shower. On the territory of the hotel there are a couple of cafes with a good menu, Starbucks. The internet in the hospital is quite good.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. Would recommend the hospital with a clear conscience if needed
About Bookimed service
I don't know how long I would have searched for a hospital myself if I hadn't written to Bukimed. There was hardly any free time for this, and there were many doubts about the choice. With Bukimed everything unfolded quickly and in a couple of weeks my father was already seen by a doctor.

FAQ about Total knee replacement (arthroplasty) revision in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the common indicators that I require a revision total knee replacement in Turkey?

Common indicators for revision total knee replacement include persistent chronic pain, joint instability, and restricted movement. In Turkey, specialists use imaging and robotic systems to identify implant loosening, deep infection, or component wear. These symptoms often signal mechanical failure or aseptic loosening of the original prosthesis.

  • Chronic pain: Persistent or returning discomfort that worsens during weight-bearing or daily activities.
  • Joint instability: A feeling that the knee is giving way, buckling, or shifting.
  • Reduced mobility: Significant stiffness or loss of range of motion despite physiotherapy efforts.
  • Mechanical failure: Audible clicking, grinding, or locking caused by worn prosthetic components.
  • Infection signs: Recurrent swelling, warmth, redness, or drainage near the surgical site.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres like Turan Turan Health Group often use Smith & Nephew Legion implants for revisions. These specialised components are designed for complex cases with bone loss. Choosing a clinic that offers 3D patient-specific guides provides higher precision during these difficult second surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that worsening pain and a wobbly knee triggered their revision. They emphasise getting clear imaging and a second opinion to confirm the cause.

What is the typical recovery period following a revision total knee replacement in Turkey?

Revision knee replacement recovery in Turkey typically takes 6 to 12 months for full function. Patients usually stay in hospital for 4 to 5 days. Returning to light activities and driving occurs between 3 and 6 months post-surgery.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 4–5 days for pain management and wound care monitoring.
  • Early mobility: Most patients start assisted walking within 24–48 hours after the procedure.
  • Daily function: Returning to light work or driving typically takes 12–24 weeks.
  • Full recovery: Complete bone healing and strength restoration often takes up to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Systems like MAKO or Smith & Nephew LEGION are common in top Bursa and Istanbul clinics. Revision surgery is complex. Specialists like Prof. Gemalmaz use 3D planning to match implants to bone loss for stable recovery.

Patient Consensus: Recovery in Turkey follows a slower timeline than primary surgery. Patients suggest staying in Turkey for several weeks for early follow-ups. This helps ensure you are safe for the long flight back to Australia.

What are the success rates for revision total knee replacement surgery in Turkey?

Revision knee replacement surgery in Turkey achieves typical success rates between 85% and 90%. Leading specialists like Dr Erman Cekic at OrtoCare Orthopedic Clinic have performed 10,000+ joint procedures. Outcomes improve at JCI-accredited facilities using robotic systems like MAKO and Smith & Nephew Legion implants.

  • Long-term survival: Medical literature shows 10-year implant survival rates for revision cases are 70–80%.
  • Infection management: Specialists like Dr Cengiz Sen specialise in treating complex periprosthetic infections during revision.
  • Robotic precision: Robotic systems like MAKOplasty help surgeons align complex revision components with higher accuracy.
  • Clinical experience: Top surgeons like Dr Eyup Bakmaz offer over 25 years of orthopaedic experience.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in revision surgery depends heavily on annual case volume. It is not just about total years of practice. Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group serve 18,000+ patients annually. This high volume means theatre teams are expertly trained for revision complications.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that outcomes depend on clear surgeon-specific data. They suggest requesting full operative notes and implant serial numbers for follow-up care in Australia. Success feels most certain when surgeons provide transparent infection rates and detailed recovery plans.

How soon will I be expected to walk after a revision total knee replacement in Turkey?

Patients in Turkey generally stand and take their first assisted steps within 24 hours of revision knee surgery. Physiotherapists at JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital or Hisar Hospital Intercontinental typically start mobilisation on the same day or the following morning.

  • Immediate mobilisation: Nurses or physiotherapists assist with standing and walking short distances within 24 hours.
  • Mobility aids: Expect to use a walker or crutches immediately to manage unsteadiness and pain.
  • Walking duration: Initial sessions last 5–10 minutes, focusing on reaching a chair or the bathroom.
  • Discharge criteria: Clinics require patients to navigate stairs and walk short distances safely before discharge.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics specialising in revision cases often include longer hospital stays of 4–5 days to monitor mobility. Turan Turan Health Group even provides 10-day hotel stays in their packages. This offers extra supervised time for physiotherapists to monitor walking progress after a complex revision.

Patient Consensus: Expect the first steps in Turkey to be short and slightly uncomfortable. Patients found that arranging VIP transfers helped immensely with limited mobility when moving between the clinic and hotel.

What is the recommended period to remain in Turkey following a revision total knee replacement?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 14 days following a revision total knee replacement. This timeframe allows for 4–5 days of inpatient hospital care and rehabilitation. It lets specialists monitor for blood clots and manage pain before the flight to Australia.

  • Hospital stay: Inpatient recovery typically lasts 4–5 days at clinics like Central Hospital.
  • Rehabilitation phase: Focused rehab usually requires 6 days to improve mobility and safety.
  • Robotic options: Surgeons like Dr Kayhan Turan use robotic-assisted techniques for complex revisions.
  • Premium implants: Top centres use recognised brands like Zimmer Biomet or Smith & Nephew.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic knee replacements cost from $6,500, revision surgeries are more complex. Leading Turkish clinics often bundle 10-day hotel stays into revision packages. This is helpful as revision recovery takes longer than a first-time replacement. Selecting a JCI-accredited facility like Memorial Sisli Hospital helps maintain international safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Travellers to Turkey appreciate clinics that handle all logistics, from VIP airport transfers to nutritionist-prepared meals. Many find that having a dedicated nurse for 24-hour support makes the initial recovery much more comfortable.
