The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

May the peace and mercy of God be with you. As a great program, the people who use it are great. The answer is excellent, but the last time was through MC Hospital Türkiye. The translator is a man named Issa. It is very weak in translation and does not translate. Why is this from the words of the doctor? Because the doctor spoke for a long time, and the translation was short, so there was a lot of things. It does not translate for me, and it did not benefit me at all, and the examination didn't help, doctor

Overall, a great experience!!
I was very skeptical doing this and especially in another country. The staff did a great job with getting everything lined up. Dr. Gurkan was great, all staff was very good and attentive. I would just ask for a little more information on the process and the timeline for treatments to work, etc. Overall, a great experience!!
Everything was ready when we got there. Great hotel. Staff was great.
Language barrier was a little difficult. I would have preferred one assistant the entire time and not so many. Little better communication and information beforehand as to process and procedures.
About Bookimed service
I never knew who I was communicating with. Change in pricing agreement was difficult. Had to pay extra for treatment and TDCS therapy which was agreed to in our original discussions.

"The doctor was really nice and understanding
I came to the consultation without documents (analyzes), the clinic replied that I was not ready to give a consultation without relevant documents, which I think was good. I can’t say the clinic is good or bad for the above reason.

FAQ about Stem cell therapy for Eye disease in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is stem cell therapy for eye disease in Turkey safe?

Stem cell therapy for eye disease in Turkey is safe when performed by registered specialists. These procedures must occur in hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI). The Turkish Ministry of Health strictly regulates these treatments through a dedicated advisory board. This helps them follow established medical protocols.

  • Accredited facilities: Memorial Healthcare Group and Medipol Mega hold JCI accreditation for safety.
  • Specialised expertise: Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 eye procedures.
  • International training: Dr Ali Riza Cenk Celebi completed his fellowship at Harvard University.
  • Hospital monitoring: Patients typically stay 2 nights in hospital for observation after treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye hospitals often combine high-volume experience with vast specialist teams. Dunyagoz Eye Hospital alone treats 66,000 patients annually. This scale allows surgeons to develop deep expertise in rare retinal conditions. These conditions are rarely seen in smaller clinics. Patients should look for doctors with International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) certifications.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the specialised care in Turkey efficient and professional. They often mention the high level of comfort in private hospital rooms during their recovery stay.

What eye diseases can be treated with stem cell therapy in Turkey?

Turkish clinics treat various degenerative and scarring eye conditions using stem cell therapy. They focus on patients with vision loss where conventional treatments have failed. Specialists commonly address retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, corneal damage, and diabetic retinopathy using techniques like limbal stem cell transplantation.

  • Retinal conditions: Treats retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration to slow progressive vision loss.
  • Corneal diseases: Specialists like Professor Ali Riza Cenk Celebi perform limbal stem cell transplantation.
  • Optic nerve issues: Clinics offer regenerative injections for optic nerve damage and atrophy.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Targeted therapies aim to repair retinal tissue damaged by chronic diabetes.
  • Surface reconstruction: Used for ocular graft versus host disease and severe corneal scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many centres handle general eye care, Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler is a single-specialty hospital serving 66,000 patients annually. Data shows high-volume centres often provide specialised 2-day hospital stays for stem cell procedures. By contrast, smaller clinics may offer outpatient treatments without overnight admission.

Patient Consensus: Patients with retinal and optic nerve problems often choose Turkey when local options are exhausted. Most aim to preserve current vision or slow progression rather than expecting a full cure.

Does stem cell therapy for eye disease in Turkey guarantee restored vision?

Stem cell therapy for eye disease in Turkey does not guarantee restored vision. Clinics offer treatments for macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. These procedures are therapeutic rather than curative. Outcomes depend on the disease stage. Results typically range from slowed progression to partial visual improvement.

  • Technique focus: Treatments target damaged ocular tissues like the retina or cornea to improve acuity.
  • Expert credentials: Surgeons such as Dr. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi hold Harvard fellowships in glaucoma.
  • Clinical volume: Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler serves 66,000 ophthalmology patients annually.
  • Safety standards: Leading centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often overlook that leading Turkish eye specialists are heavily involved in international research. Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 procedures and participated in multlicentre clinical trials. This high surgical volume helps doctors identify suitable candidates accurately. This is vital when managing experimental therapies with variable outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that results vary by diagnosis and disease stage. Experience shows that promises of guaranteed vision are a red flag. Real improvements are often modest. Patients should get a second opinion from a specialist before travel.

How effective is stem cell therapy for eye diseases in Turkey?

Stem cell therapy in Turkey repairs ocular tissues to address vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa. It also treats macular degeneration and Stargardt disease. Clinical data shows nearly 49% of patients experience improved visual acuity within 6 months. Specialist centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital perform these regenerative procedures using JCI-accredited protocols.

  • Condition range: Treatment targets retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Stargardt disease, and corneal damage.
  • Clinical outcomes: Patients frequently report improved night vision, clearer daytime vision, and reduced inflammation.
  • Techniques: Specialists perform limbal stem cell transplantation and retinal regeneration using mesenchymal cells.
  • Expert credentialing: Surgeons such as Prof. Yusuf Yildirim hold European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certification.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye centres treat 66,000+ patients annually. This creates a massive procedural data pool. High-volume clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler provide inclusive packages from $7,500 to $16,000. These often bundle a 2-day hospital stay and specialist consultations for intensive monitoring after the application.

Patient Consensus: Patients travel to Turkey for these eye treatments because of the specialised hospital environments. The streamlined process from airport transfers to private hospital rooms makes the medical transition much easier.

Who is ineligible for stem cell therapy for eye disease in Turkey?

Ineligible candidates for stem cell therapy in Turkey include patients with end-stage vision loss. This applies when no viable retinal tissue remains. Individuals with active ocular infections or uncontrolled glaucoma are also generally excluded. Those with systemic health issues like severe heart disease are ineligible as well.

  • Retinal atrophy: Treatment is unavailable if photoreceptor loss is total.
  • Active ocular conditions: Uncontrolled pressure or inflammation prevents safe surgical intervention.
  • Systemic health issues: Severe heart disease or uncontrolled diabetes makes travel and procedures unsafe.
  • Age restrictions: Certain hereditary blindness protocols often exclude patients under 18 years of age.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Single-specialty centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler serve 66,000+ patients annually. These clinics use diagnostic tests to filter candidates. Patients with prior complex surgeries or dense scar tissue are often deemed ineligible. This is because outcomes become too unpredictable for these specialised protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that clinics require recent diagnostic scans first. These scans confirm remaining nerve function before the clinic approves travel. Successful candidates noted that having realistic expectations was a key part of the screening. Most centres aim for stabilising disease rather than a complete cure.

What is the recovery timeline for stem cell eye therapy in Turkey?

Stem cell eye therapy in Turkey requires 1 to 2 months for initial healing. Visual gains typically stabilise within 3 to 6 months. While injections or transplant surgeries often take under 2 hours, cells need several months to repair ocular tissues.

  • Immediate phase: Expect mild redness, itching, or swelling during the first 3 days.
  • Initial healing: Patients must avoid physical activity and eye contact for 1 to 4 weeks.
  • Tissue integration: Improvements in light perception or clarity usually begin between months 3 and 6.
  • Monitoring period: Specialists often recommend staying in Istanbul for up to 1 month for follow-up.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Specialists like Dr. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi at Istinye University Liv Hospital Topkapi often combine therapy with follow-up protocols. These protocols target specific conditions like glaucoma or retinal damage. Data shows that clinics handling 20,000+ patients annually, such as Dunyagoz, provide 2-day inpatient stays. These stays monitor for immediate post-operative side effects.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe the first few days as a period of rest. This helps manage light sensitivity and irritation. Success is viewed as a waiting game. Many patients arrange local follow-up care in Australia before departing to manage the assessment period.

Is hospitalisation required for eye stem cell therapy in Turkey?

Hospitalisation for eye stem cell therapy in Turkey depends on the surgical approach. While some centres manage patients as outpatients, leading facilities often include a 2-day hospital stay. This allows them to monitor recovery. Specialist centres in Istanbul use JCI-accredited theatres for these regulated regenerative treatments.

  • Clinical monitoring: Certain packages include 2 days in a private hospital room for observation.
  • Injection-based therapy: Intravitreal injections might not require overnight admission.
  • Surgical transplantation: Complex limbal stem cell transplants typically involve short 48-hour clinical stays.
  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Fevzi Akkan at Dunyagoz perform surgeries in hospital settings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear split between eye hospitals and multi-specialty hubs. Single-specialty clinics like Dunyagoz treat 66,000 patients annually. They often bundle a 2-day hospital stay into their A$20,400 packages. Conversely, multi-specialty hubs may offer lower-cost outpatient injections from A$11,000 with no overnight admission.

Patient Consensus: Patients travelling to Turkey report high satisfaction with the hospital transition. This includes the move from airport transfers to private hospital rooms. The professional care in Istanbul often exceeds expectations for those seeking regenerative ocular treatments.
