How Much Does Stomach stapling Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Stomach stapling in Turkey typically costs from AUD $4,326 to AUD $5,582. The final investment depends on the surgical technique, the clinic’s accreditation status, and the surgeon’s level of expertise. Australians can save approximately 78% compared to local private fees, which average around AUD $22,330. Packages generally include the surgical procedure, anaesthetic, hospital stay, and airport-to-clinic transfers.

  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Typically adds 20–30% to the cost compared to standard laparoscopic methods.
  • Hospital accreditation: Premium facilities with JCI and ISO certifications often charge slightly higher rates.
  • City variations: Medical hubs like Istanbul and Ankara are prominent destinations for international weight loss surgery.
  • Specialist fees: Surgeons with international certifications or over 20 years of experience may command higher fees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a surgeon like Professor Abdukadir Bedirli, who has performed over 1,500 robotic surgeries, delivers high-tech precision. While larger institutions like Medipol Mega University Hospital utilize the Da Vinci system, specialized centers like Dr. Kaplan Baha Temizgonul’s practice offer tailored bariatric focus. This high volume of specialized care often results in success rates around 95% for obesity treatments in Turkey.

Data verified by Bookimed as of August 2026, based on patient requests and official quotes from 63 clinics worldwide. Median costs are based on real invoices (2025–2026) and updated monthly. Actual prices may vary.

FAQ about Stomach stapling in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the primary risks or complications associated with gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey?

Gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey carries standard surgical risks like staple line leaks (0.5%–2%) and blood clots. Australian patients face unique travel-related challenges. These include an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis from long-haul flights and the need for coordinated follow-up care with local GPs after returning home.

  • Staple line leaks: Stomach contents entering the abdomen can cause severe peritonitis or sepsis.
  • Blood clots: Long flights home increase risks of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux: The new stomach shape can trigger or worsen chronic acid reflux.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: Rapid weight loss requires strict adherence to lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements.
  • Sleeve stricture: Scar tissue can narrow the passage, causing persistent vomiting or nausea.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Top Istanbul clinics mitigate long-term risks by including psychologists on their bariatric teams. Dr Kaplan Baha Temizgonul provides patient follow-ups for up to 17 years. This extended support helps Australians build the eating habits they need. These habits prevent weight regain or severe nutritional issues.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find gas and shoulder pain are the main early discomforts. They suggest treating fever or inability to drink as red flags. Planning follow-up care in Australia before departure makes the transition home smoother.

Am I an eligible candidate for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey?

Eligibility for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey depends on international standards followed by JCI-accredited clinics. Candidates typically need a BMI over 40. Alternatively, a BMI over 35 with weight-related conditions like Type 2 diabetes is also accepted. Surgeons also require a history of failed non-surgical weight loss attempts.

  • BMI threshold: The threshold is 40+ or 35+ with comorbidities like sleep apnoea or hypertension.
  • Metabolic disorders: Some clinics consider a BMI of 30–34.9 for severe metabolic issues.
  • Age range: Surgeons typically operate on patients aged 18 to 65 years old.
  • Clinical screening: Experts like Dr Kaplan Baha Temizgonul require detailed pre-op medical assessments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often have stricter medical gatekeeping than many assume. Australian patients often travel to avoid long public waitlists. However, top Istanbul centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental still require documented medical necessity. Our data shows clinics with dedicated psychologists, like Lotus Bariatrics, have higher long-term success rates. This is because they vet for mental readiness alongside BMI.

Patient Consensus: Turkey is not an automatic approval. Surgeons base eligibility on health markers rather than just payment. Many Australians choose Turkey because surgery at home is often inaccessible. Local private insurance gaps and public waitlists block access, even when patients meet the medical criteria.

What is 'stomach stapling' and how is gastric sleeve surgery performed in Turkey?

Stomach stapling is a legacy term for restrictive weight-loss surgery. Modern surgeons in Turkey perform gastric sleeve surgery using laparoscopic techniques. This involves removing 70% to 80% of the stomach. The remaining portion is sealed into a narrow tube using surgical staples.

  • Surgical approach: Surgeons use 3 to 5 tiny incisions to insert specialised laparoscopic tools.
  • Stomach reduction: Removing the outer curved section eliminates most ghrelin, the hunger-stimulating hormone.
  • Tube formation: The remaining stomach holds 100 to 150 ml, similar to a banana.
  • Safety protocols: Surgeons perform dye or air leak tests before closing the incisions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric specialists often combine surgical restriction with metabolic support. Dr Kaplan Baha Temizgonul at Lotus Bariatrics includes a psychologist in the care team. This dual approach helps manage the emotional transition alongside the physical weight loss. It maintains a 95% success rate.

Patient Consensus: Australians often choose Turkey for gastric sleeves. This is due to significant savings compared to local costs. The typical 3–4 night hospital stay includes comprehensive pre-op tests. Most packages bundle VIP transfers, hotel stays, and companion accommodation for a smoother recovery.

Why is gastric sleeve surgery so much cheaper in Turkey?

Gastric sleeve surgery costs significantly less in Turkey. Lower domestic labour costs are one reason. Government medical tourism subsidies and a weak Turkish Lira also play a part. All-inclusive packages typically range from $3,100 to $4,000. They offer up to 78% savings compared to the $16,000 Australian average.

  • Economic factors: Lower salaries for theatre staff and nurses reduce overall hospital overheads.
  • Currency exchange: The Australian Dollar holds high purchasing power against the Turkish Lira.
  • Government support: The state provides tax breaks and grants to clinics serving international patients.
  • High volume: Major centres handle thousands of cases, creating operational efficiency and lower costs.
  • Wholesale bundling: Clinics negotiate bulk rates for hotels and transfers to lower package prices.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul is the primary hub. However, choosing clinics in Izmir or Antalya often yields even better value. High-volume surgeons like Dr Omer Yoldass in Izmir use the same Da Vinci robotic systems as Istanbul centres. However, their price point is often more competitive. This is due to lower local property and operating costs.

Patient Consensus: Prices in Turkey naturally cover airport transfers, hospital stays, and hotel nights. Most patients find the exchange rate makes private healthcare much more accessible than in Australia. Istanbul is often described as a premium option. Meanwhile, Izmir and Antalya provide excellent care for a smaller budget.

What is typically included in a medical tourism package for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey?

Gastric sleeve packages in Turkey bundle the surgical procedure, pre-operative testing, and luxury hospitality. These all-inclusive options typically cover hospital stays, 4-star or 5-star hotel accommodation, and VIP transfers between the airport, clinic, and hotel. Patients also receive dedicated translation support and initial post-operative medications.

  • Clinical assessments: Cover blood tests, chest X-rays, and consultations with bariatric specialists.
  • Surgical components: Include surgeon fees, anaesthesia, operating theatre costs, and nursing care.
  • Hospital stay: Usually provides 2–3 nights in a private room with meals.
  • VIP logistics: Chauffeur-driven transfers cover all travel between the airport and clinic.
  • Language assistance: Personal coordinators or interpreters help during medical check-ins and appointments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most packages seem similar, the real value lies in the multidisciplinary team. High-quality clinics like Lotus Bariatrics include psychologists and dietitians in the base price. This holistic approach supports the 95% success rate seen in top-tier Turkish obesity treatments.

Patient Consensus: Turkish packages make the process seamless by coordinating every hotel and hospital transfer. Patients appreciate having a dedicated coordinator who manages the language gap and post-op diet plan.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey after gastric sleeve surgery?

Most patients require 5 to 7 days in Turkey after gastric sleeve surgery. This allows safe recovery and medical clearance. This timeframe covers the critical 2 to 3 nights in hospital for monitoring. It also includes 3 to 4 days of local hotel recovery before flying.

  • Hospital stay: Patients typically spend 2 to 3 nights in hospital for immediate post-operative care.
  • Hotel recovery: Surgeons recommend staying in a local hotel for 3 to 4 days afterwards.
  • Travel clearance: Doctors usually provide a fit-to-fly certificate 5 to 7 days after the procedure.
  • Final check-up: Specialists conduct a final wound review and diet transition check before departure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many packages include 3 hospital nights, choosing a clinic that offers extended follow-up is vital. For example, Dr. Kaplan Baha Temizgonul provides patient support for up to 17 years. This long-term oversight supports a safe liquid diet transition before patients leave Istanbul.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the first 48 hours tough but are often mobile shortly after. Most advise staying at least 6 days. This helps handle fatigue and complete final medical reviews before the flight home.
