I couldn't have wanted for more
What really stood out was sitting with my surgeon as he so carefully measured and marked my upper eyelids. He was very honest about what to expect from the recovery and potential scarring, which I appreciated. The procedure was done with just local anesthesia. I'm still in the early healing stages, but I am feeling better than expected so far. The clinic team has stayed in touch to check in on me, and there were no additional expenses at all. I can't even think of any advice for a future patient, because the clinic provided all the necessary information beforehand. I couldn't have wanted for more.

Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team
Operation DBS. Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team . Because setting up the equipment is as important process for patients as the operation to install it. Honestly, I can't imagine that such an operation can be done in Ukraine.... Of course, there are young and promising doctors. But there is no equipment.

Dr Sait has worked wonders
On the 18th he underwent surgery with a vagus nerve stimulator on the 25th and it was connected. Dr Sait has worked wonders. Daytime seizures are very rare but nighttime seizures have changed completely. I am 35 years old and so far only the first connection 0.25 paediatric dose and 5 more connections. Thank you to the neurologist Dr Yemmir who agreed to treat me. For all my years my encephalogram is finally normal. I am from abroad. I don't live in Istanbul. But I thank the whole clinic, all the doctors, all the interpreters, all the staff.

"But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc
I would like to express our satisfaction with the DBS operation, the stay in the hospital, which I dare to say at the world level. Dr. Ali Zirh is an absolute professional, precise, clear, concrete and above all very human. But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc. Ali Zarh. Last but not least, I am fascinated by the neurologist Dr. Basak and her team, who for 21 days took care of regulating the exact therapy and impulses of my husband. Our entire stay was reduced to the last detail for our benefit, to feel at home. We have not regretted it for a moment, that we chose MEDIPOL MEGA GROUP, thank you Mahmoud, you were born to help people like us!!! Please to reword Mahmoud Kathab ,he deserved a lot!!!

I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve
I underwent Gamma Knife surgery on my trigeminal nerve at Medical Park Clinic and I would like to express my huge gratitude to all the medical staff and especially to the professor who performed the procedure. The operation was difficult, as it involved the trigeminal nerve and there was a risk of injury to nearby nerves. However, thanks to the professionalism and high qualifications of the professor, everything went well. He performed the procedure with jewellery precision, minimising possible risks and ensuring an excellent result. The Medical Park clinic also impressed with its high level of service, attentive attitude to patients and modern technological base. I felt in safe hands from the moment of consultation to the end of the rehabilitation period. I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve. Thank you for your work and care!

The paediatric neurologist does not dispose the child to herself, immediately started talking to the child in her own language, and the child did not understand her, and she took it as if he did not react to her. And she made a diagnosis on this basis. Secondly, there aren't enough interpreters. They're torn between clients,

I do not have a very good impression of the clinic, because we went to do the operation at the agreed price of $ 4000 for the removal of tonsils, on arrival took 200 euros for consultation and said that the operation will cost 5900 euros.Prices are cosmic, it is better to choose another clinic, will be cheaper and not worse result.

The professionalism of the doctors is top notch
The professionalism of the doctors is top notch. The availability of modern equipment is attractive. The medical staff is attentive and responsive to patients. Excellent work of the international department in terms of logistics and translators, which allows you to concentrate as much as possible on the diagnosis and communication with doctors. Availability of separate rooms per patient during hospitalization. Ensuring adequate prices for hotel rooms. In simple words: the transfer operates from the airport to the hotel and back, daily to the clinic and back to the hotel. There was always a translator with us at the clinic who took us where we needed to go. We received professional medical care.
In this section I would like to note the excellent work of the translator Ayla. A wonderful young woman who exudes confidence, calmness and positivity.
I wish all translators were like Ayla).

FAQ about Multiple subpial transections in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why are patients travelling to Turkey for Multiple Subpial Transections?

Patients travel to Turkey for multiple subpial transections. The procedure offers a precise surgical solution for drug-resistant epilepsy. This condition cannot be treated with standard resections. The procedure costs between $14,500 and $25,800. This saves Australians up to _price_percent_discount_% compared to domestic private costs.

  • Functional neurosurgery: Surgeons target focal seizures in eloquent brain areas like speech or movement.
  • Technology: Centres use 3 Tesla MRI, intraoperative MRI, and O-arm systems for precision.
  • Specialists: Professors like Dr Nejat Akalan have published over 110 scientific papers on neurosurgery.
  • Shorter wait times: Private networks in Istanbul provide rapid evaluations compared to Australian public lists.
  • JCI accreditation: Major hospitals like Medipol Mega and Memorial hold international gold-standard safety certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic epilepsy surgery starts at $9,600, subpial transections require specialised functional neurosurgeons. Medipol Mega University Hospital is a primary destination. This is because its neurosurgery department head, Dr Nejat Akalan, integrates intraoperative MRI. This provides accuracy during these delicate procedures.

Patient Consensus: Lower costs compared to Australia draw many patients to Turkey for complex neurosurgery. The high concentration of specialists allows for thorough comparisons. This also enables faster treatment than at home.

Why is Multiple Subpial Transection performed in critical brain areas for epilepsy patients in Turkey?

Neurosurgeons in Turkey perform multiple subpial transection (MST) to treat refractory epilepsy. They use it when seizure zones overlap with eloquent brain regions. This functional-sparing technique severs horizontal nerve fibres. This stops seizure spread but preserves vertical columns. These columns control movement, speech, and sensation.

  • Functional preservation: MST protects vertical neuronal columns and blood supply in critical brain areas.
  • Selective disruption: Surgeons make shallow cuts to interrupt horizontal pathways that synchronise epileptic activity.
  • Eloquent mapping: Specialists use intraoperative MRI and O-arm systems to precisely map seizure zones.
  • Surgical alternative: MST serves as a non-resective option when removing brain tissue risks permanent disability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurosurgery departments often combine MST with technologies like the O-arm system or intraoperative MRI. Prof. Nejat Akalan at Medipol Mega University Hospital uses these tools. They let him verify the seizure focus in real-time. With this high-tech approach, surgeons only sever the pathways necessary to stop seizures while protecting functional tissue.

Patient Consensus: Turkey is a preferred destination for epilepsy patients. Surgeons there offer function-sparing options like MST when traditional resection is too risky. Families find relief knowing that detailed surgical planning prioritises speech and motor control during brain surgery.

Which hospitals and specialists in Turkey are known for epilepsy and functional neurosurgery?

Turkey excels in epilepsy and functional neurosurgery through JCI-accredited tertiary centres that integrate neurology and neurosurgery departments. Leading hospitals like Memorial Bahçelievler and Medipol Mega use 3T MRI and intraoperative monitoring. They perform complex procedures such as multiple subpial transections and deep brain stimulation.

  • Integrated care: Major hospitals house neurology, imaging, and neurosurgery departments under one roof.
  • Advanced technology: Centres use 3T MRI, ROSA robotic assistance, and O-arm systems for precision.
  • Expert specialists: Prof. Nejat Akalan and Dr Tahsin Ali Zirh lead complex functional neurosurgery teams.
  • Accredited facilities: Memorial Bahçelievler and Medipol Mega hold JCI accreditation for high safety standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurosurgery success relies on high-volume academic centres rather than standalone clinics. Medipol Mega University Hospital serves over 1,000,000 patients annually. This massive scale allows surgeons like Prof. Nejat Akalan to specialise deeply in sub-types like pharmacoresistant epilepsy surgery.

Patient Consensus: Large private hospital groups in Istanbul and Ankara are preferred for brain procedures. Patients value having EEG, MRI, and surgery coordinated in one location. Most recommend choosing established hospital brands that provide personal coordinators and airport transfers.

What is a Multiple Subpial Transection (MST) and how is it performed in Turkey?

Multiple subpial transection is a surgical procedure for drug-resistant epilepsy that preserves vital brain areas. Surgeons make shallow, parallel cuts through the grey matter to disconnect horizontal seizure pathways. This technique maintains vertical neural connections responsible for movement, speech and vision.

  • Surgical approach: Surgeons perform a craniotomy to access the brain surface and designated gyrus.
  • Nerve disconnection: Fine micro-instruments create precise cuts spaced 4 to 5 mm apart across the focus.
  • Precise navigation: Teams use computer-assisted neuronavigation systems like Brainlab for accurate surgical mapping.
  • Real-time monitoring: Intraoperative electrocorticography records direct brain activity to verify the seizure focus boundaries.
  • Hospital recovery: Most patients stay in hospital for 5 days for monitoring and rehabilitation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish university hospitals often provide better value for complex epilepsy surgeries than general private clinics. Packages at major networks like Memorial average A$35,400. Medipol Mega University Hospital, however, offers access to specialised interventional neuroradiology and 35 operating theatres. This infrastructure is vital for managing medically refractory cases that need multiple surgical approaches.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the remote pre-assessment through document exchange helpful for planning their travel from Australia. They recommend confirming the neuro-intensive care unit backup. They also suggest discussing post-operative follow-up plans before arriving in Turkey.
