How Much Does Medication treatment for epilepsy Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Medication treatment for epilepsy in Turkey typically costs from AUD $141 to AUD $1,130. The final price depends on whether the patient requires basic diagnostic screening or advanced imaging like long-term sleep EEG. In Australia, similar private care averages AUD $6,638, allowing patients to save approximately 89%. Standard packages often include neurologist consultations, blood tests, and therapeutic drug monitoring.

  • Basic diagnostic programs: Typically include essential EEG tests and initial specialist reviews to confirm drug suitability.
  • Advanced neuro-imaging: Brain MRI and overnight sleep EEG protocols often increase the total package price.
  • Pediatric protocols: Specialised care for children typically costs 20–30% more than standard adult medication management.
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring: Often included in higher-tier plans to track drug levels and adjust dosages precisely.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing Turkey for epilepsy management offers access to doctors with significant American clinical experience. For instance, Dr. Ebru Erbayat Altay and Dr. Sinan Comu trained at top-tier US institutions like the University of Washington. Specialist centres like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital offer comprehensive diagnostic packages for approximately A$3,400. These packages provide great value by bundling MRI, sleep EEG, and airport transfers into one transparent price.

I couldn't have wanted for more
What really stood out was sitting with my surgeon as he so carefully measured and marked my upper eyelids. He was very honest about what to expect from the recovery and potential scarring, which I appreciated. The procedure was done with just local anesthesia. I'm still in the early healing stages, but I am feeling better than expected so far. The clinic team has stayed in touch to check in on me, and there were no additional expenses at all. I can't even think of any advice for a future patient, because the clinic provided all the necessary information beforehand. I couldn't have wanted for more.

Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team
Operation DBS. Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team . Because setting up the equipment is as important process for patients as the operation to install it. Honestly, I can't imagine that such an operation can be done in Ukraine.... Of course, there are young and promising doctors. But there is no equipment.

Dr Sait has worked wonders
On the 18th he underwent surgery with a vagus nerve stimulator on the 25th and it was connected. Dr Sait has worked wonders. Daytime seizures are very rare but nighttime seizures have changed completely. I am 35 years old and so far only the first connection 0.25 paediatric dose and 5 more connections. Thank you to the neurologist Dr Yemmir who agreed to treat me. For all my years my encephalogram is finally normal. I am from abroad. I don't live in Istanbul. But I thank the whole clinic, all the doctors, all the interpreters, all the staff.

"But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc
I would like to express our satisfaction with the DBS operation, the stay in the hospital, which I dare to say at the world level. Dr. Ali Zirh is an absolute professional, precise, clear, concrete and above all very human. But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc. Ali Zarh. Last but not least, I am fascinated by the neurologist Dr. Basak and her team, who for 21 days took care of regulating the exact therapy and impulses of my husband. Our entire stay was reduced to the last detail for our benefit, to feel at home. We have not regretted it for a moment, that we chose MEDIPOL MEGA GROUP, thank you Mahmoud, you were born to help people like us!!! Please to reword Mahmoud Kathab ,he deserved a lot!!!

I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve
I underwent Gamma Knife surgery on my trigeminal nerve at Medical Park Clinic and I would like to express my huge gratitude to all the medical staff and especially to the professor who performed the procedure. The operation was difficult, as it involved the trigeminal nerve and there was a risk of injury to nearby nerves. However, thanks to the professionalism and high qualifications of the professor, everything went well. He performed the procedure with jewellery precision, minimising possible risks and ensuring an excellent result. The Medical Park clinic also impressed with its high level of service, attentive attitude to patients and modern technological base. I felt in safe hands from the moment of consultation to the end of the rehabilitation period. I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve. Thank you for your work and care!

I do not have a very good impression of the clinic, because we went to do the operation at the agreed price of $ 4000 for the removal of tonsils, on arrival took 200 euros for consultation and said that the operation will cost 5900 euros.Prices are cosmic, it is better to choose another clinic, will be cheaper and not worse result.

The professionalism of the doctors is top notch
The professionalism of the doctors is top notch. The availability of modern equipment is attractive. The medical staff is attentive and responsive to patients. Excellent work of the international department in terms of logistics and translators, which allows you to concentrate as much as possible on the diagnosis and communication with doctors. Availability of separate rooms per patient during hospitalization. Ensuring adequate prices for hotel rooms. In simple words: the transfer operates from the airport to the hotel and back, daily to the clinic and back to the hotel. There was always a translator with us at the clinic who took us where we needed to go. We received professional medical care.
In this section I would like to note the excellent work of the translator Ayla. A wonderful young woman who exudes confidence, calmness and positivity.
I wish all translators were like Ayla).

FAQ about Medication treatment for epilepsy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How effective are anti-seizure medications in Turkish medical centres?

Anti-seizure medications in Turkey control or stabilise seizures in approximately 70% of patients. Leading neurology centres in Istanbul and Ankara follow global protocols. They use high-resolution 3 Tesla MRI and video-EEG for accurate drug selection and dosage titration for long-term remission.

  • Success rate: Medications stabilise or completely control seizures for around 70% of patients treated.
  • Monotherapy focus: Specialists usually start with one first-line drug like levetiracetam to minimise side effects.
  • Diagnostic accuracy: Neurologists use 3 Tesla MRI and genetic profiling to identify the correct medication.
  • Blood monitoring: Facilities like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital perform drug level monitoring to balance efficacy.
  • Alternative pathways: Patients resistant to drugs transition to vagus nerve stimulation or epilepsy surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While initial medications work for many, their effectiveness drops to under 10% after two failed drugs. Turkish university hospitals stand out by integrating therapeutic drug monitoring. This precise blood testing helps specialists like Dr. Baris Metin adjust dosages in real-time. These adjustments avoid toxicity while maintaining control.

Patient Consensus: Accessing specialists in Turkey is straightforward, often allowing same-day private consultations for urgent medication adjustments. Patients find levetiracetam highly effective when monitored closely by coordinators who assist with follow-up care.

What happens if standard medications fail to control seizures while in Turkey?

When standard medications fail to control seizures, Turkish specialists escalate care. This includes advanced diagnostics and inpatient protocols. Facilities like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital use therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to check medication levels. They then transition to intensive therapies like Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) or neurosurgery.

  • Advanced diagnostics: Specialists perform video-EEG monitoring and 3T MRI to identify seizure triggers.
  • Drug level monitoring: Clinics use TDM so medications reach therapeutic levels in the blood.
  • Device-based therapies: Surgeons like Dr Baris Topcular perform VNS or Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
  • Surgical intervention: Leading centres offer resective brain surgery for drug-resistant or refractory epilepsy.
  • Paediatric protocols: Specialists like Dr Sinan Comu apply US-trained methods for complex childhood cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy benefit most from hospitals affiliated with international institutions. Anadolu Medical Center, affiliated with Johns Hopkins, provides access to multidisciplinary teams. These teams combine professor-led neurology with neurosurgery for refractory cases.

Patient Consensus: Turkish doctors treat breakthrough seizures as an urgent warning rather than a routine setback. Patients suggest keeping a written seizure diary. This helps neurologists decide between switching drugs or moving towards surgery.

What are the first-line medication treatments for epilepsy in Turkey?

Neurologists in Turkey use levetiracetam and lamotrigine as primary first-line treatments for most seizure types. These specialists follow international protocols. They often start with monotherapy for focal or generalised epilepsy. Leading JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul provide thorough diagnostic workups. This helps tailor these medications to individual patients.

  • Focal seizures: Specialists typically prescribe levetiracetam, lamotrigine, or carbamazepine as effective starting options.
  • Generalised seizures: Valproic acid and levetiracetam serve as broad-spectrum medications for various seizure types.
  • Diagnostic packages: All-inclusive diagnostic bundles often include MRI, sleep EEG, and neurologist consultations.
  • Medication monitoring: Clinics like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital use therapeutic drug monitoring for safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurology centres often include therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and sleep EEG in their initial diagnostic packages. This data-driven approach lets doctors like Dr Baris Metin adjust dosages precisely. It also helps avoid the trial-and-error period common with anti-seizure medications.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey frequently start with levetiracetam or lamotrigine. This is due to their manageable side-effect profiles. Many suggest clarifying the specific seizure type with the neurologist before beginning any new medication plan.

Can doctors monitor the effectiveness of epilepsy drugs through specialised testing in Turkey?

Doctors in Turkey monitor epilepsy drug effectiveness through therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and inpatient video-EEG. Leading JCI-accredited centres like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital use blood level measurements. They also use brain imaging. Together, these help adjust dosages. Specialists also utilise 24-hour sleep EEG to capture electrical activity and prevent medication toxicity.

  • Therapeutic drug monitoring: Measures medication levels in blood for safety and to prevent side effects.
  • Inpatient video-EEG: Records brain activity while provoking seizures to assess real-time medication response.
  • Neuroimaging: Uses 3T MRI to identify structural causes that might resist drug therapy.
  • Pharmacogenetic screening: Predicts drug metabolism based on DNA to tailor more effective treatment regimens.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey ranks second globally for neurological requests on Bookimed. Centres like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital pioneered thought-focused medicine. They also use specialised inpatient units for medication reduction. This intensive monitoring helps identify the exact drug dosage needed. That dosage safely suppresses abnormal electrical discharges.

Patient Consensus: Longer video-EEG monitoring tests drugs under real-world stressors. Patients find this effectively guides medication choices. Many travellers from Australia value having a clear written follow-up plan. It helps with medication adjustments after their Turkish clinic visit.

How can international patients refill or bring epilepsy medications into Turkey?

International patients may bring a 3-month supply of epilepsy medication into Turkey for personal use. Drugs must remain in original packaging with a signed doctor’s letter and prescription. Local pharmacies cannot dispense foreign prescriptions. Patients must consult a Turkish neurologist for a local script to obtain refills.

  • Quantity limits: Customs allows up to 90 days of medication for personal use.
  • Documentation needed: Carry a neurologist’s letter detailing the medical condition and dosage.
  • Original packaging: Keep all medications in pharmacy containers with clear prescription labels.
  • Refill process: Visit a specialist to obtain a Turkish e-prescription for local pharmacies.
  • Controlled substances: Special import permits may be required for barbiturates or benzodiazepines.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Specialist hospitals like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital provide therapeutic drug monitoring. This ensures local medication equivalents maintain effective blood levels. This is vital because Turkish brand names often differ from Australian versions. Accessing these diagnostics helps prevent breakthrough seizures during a transition to locally sourced pharmaceuticals.

Patient Consensus: Carry medications in hand luggage and always bring a translated doctor’s letter. Turkish pharmacists are helpful and can quickly confirm if specific generic ingredients are in stock. Private clinics in Turkey can rewrite prescriptions rapidly after a short consultation. This is helpful if patients run low.
