Cochlear implant placement in Turkey generally ranges from AUD $12,703 to AUD $36,132. The final cost depends on the specific device model, such as the Cochlear Kanso or Nucleus series, and whether the procedure is unilateral or bilateral. In Australia, this surgery often costs around AUD $48,694, meaning patients can save approximately 50% by travelling. Packages typically include the implant device, hospitalisation, surgery, and airport-to-clinic transfers.

  • Bilateral cochlear implant: typically costs 80-90% more than a single-ear procedure.
  • Advanced implant models: Premium devices like the Kanso 2 series carry a higher price point.

I am pleasantly surprised and grateful to everyone who took care of me
Excellent experience. I traveled from Mexico to have cochlear implant surgery. First of all, I found this hospital thanks to the attention of Bookimed, they attended me very well, got the best option and started the whole process. At the beginning I was obviously a little bit afraid that everything was real and correct and with good results, it was the first time I used this kind of medical tourism. I searched many countries and options and found the best deal through Bookimed at Hisar Hospital in Istanbul at the best price. Now that it's all over, I am pleasantly surprised and grateful to everyone who took care of me. I am impressed with how well they have organized everything for international patients. From the transportation, to the airport-hotel-airport, hotel-hospital-hotel, in all the appointments I had, more than 3 times in two weeks. The international department assigned me one and sometimes two translators, all were very well behaved, Dr. Yabuz Selim very attentive and professional, the hospital was excellent, the package included two nights accommodation in a room with two rooms, and meals for patient and companion. Pre-operative studies, post-operative follow-up, and only the agreed amount was paid from the beginning, not a dollar more we had to pay. I had never had this experience in a hospital before. The whole procedure was fast and without complications, they checked me 3 more times without any problem. They helped me resolve all my doubts and concerns, always with excellent response through whatsapp. I sincerely recommend and thank everyone involved in Hisar Hospital. I hope I never have to go back, but if I need to, I will not even look elsewhere.
Everything was excellent. It exceeded my expectations by far.

FAQ about Cochlear implant placement in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How long is the hospital stay and recovery time after cochlear implant surgery in Turkey?

Most patients spend 1 to 2 nights in a Turkish hospital after cochlear implant surgery. Physical recovery allows for light activity within 4 days. Full incision healing takes 3 to 4 weeks. Device activation typically occurs 2 to 6 weeks post-surgery once swelling subsides.

  • Hospital stay: Patients typically stay 1–3 days depending on the surgical package and age.
  • Initial recovery: Vertigo and fatigue are common during the first 24–72 hours post-surgery.
  • Return to work: Most adults return to non-strenuous jobs within 1–2 weeks of treatment.
  • Wound healing: Stitches are usually removed around 14 days after the procedure in Istanbul.
  • Activation timeframe: Surgeons wait 2–6 weeks for healing before switching on the sound processor.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics suggest a 1-night stay. However, high-volume specialists like Dr Yavuz Selim Yildirim often include 2 nights in JCI-accredited facilities. This extra day is vital for monitoring balance issues. Post-operative vertigo is the primary factor limiting immediate travel for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report feeling back to normal within 15 days despite initial dizziness. They appreciate the coordinated transfers. These run between the hotel and clinic during the two-week wait for stitch removal.

What is the procedure and recovery timeline for cochlear implant surgery in Turkey?

Cochlear implant surgery in Turkey typically involves a 2-hour procedure under general anaesthesia followed by a 1 to 3-day hospital stay. Full physical recovery generally takes 1 to 2 weeks. However, device activation and auditory rehabilitation occur separately over the following months.

  • Surgical duration: Specialists perform the placement in 1.5 to 3 hours per ear.
  • Hospitalisation period: Patients stay 1 to 3 days for monitoring and intravenous antibiotics.
  • Initial healing: Swelling, dizziness, and headaches usually subside within the first 4 to 7 days.
  • Device activation: Audiologists switch on and map the processor 2 to 6 weeks post-surgery.
  • Long-term results: Meaningful hearing improvement typically develops gradually over 6 to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish ENT packages often include extended hotel stays of 10 to 21 days. This is essential for international patients. It allows surgeons like Dr Yavuz Selim Yildirim to perform final wound checks and stitch removal. These checks happen before the flight home.

Patient Consensus: The first few days bring temporary dizziness and ringing. Everything is well-organised for international patients. Hearing feels mechanical at first but improves significantly with speech therapy in Turkey.

What kind of post-operative care and rehabilitation is provided after cochlear implant surgery in Turkey?

For cochlear implants in Turkey, post-operative care involves structured wound management and specialist audiological mapping. It also includes long-term auditory rehabilitation. Patients typically stay 1–3 days in hospital. This is followed by external device activation and iterative speech therapy sessions. These sessions take place at JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul or Ankara.

  • Immediate healing: Surgeons monitor the incision for 7–14 days before removing non-absorbable sutures.
  • Device activation: Audiologists fit and activate the speech processor 2–4 weeks after surgery.
  • Mapping sessions: Specialists calibrate electrical stimulation levels to match the brain’s progressive neuroadaptation.
  • Auditory training: Patients attend dedicated speech therapy to interpret new sounds and phonetic patterns.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often bundle extended hotel stays into cochlear packages. An example is the 21-day inclusion at Lokman Hekim Akay Hospital. This is vital. The initial activation and first mapping sessions usually happen 2 weeks post-op. Staying local for the full period ensures their surgeon and audiologist can manage the transition. This is critical as they move from silence to sound.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey felt supported by personal coordinators who organised every transport leg and appointment. Practical recovery involves sleeping upright, eating soft foods, and using a notepad to communicate. This helps while hearing settles.

Why is Turkey a popular destination for cochlear implant surgery?

Turkey is a leading destination for cochlear implants due to JCI-accredited hospitals, highly experienced specialists, and significantly lower costs. Patients avoid long waiting lists. They can access surgeons trained at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. These surgeons use premium devices like the Cochlear Kanso 2 or Series 600.

  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons like Dr Yavuz Selim Yildirim have performed 900+ successful cochlear procedures.
  • Premium technology: Clinics provide the latest Kanso 2 and Series 600 devices for better hearing.
  • Package savings: Procedures cost from $9,000 to $25,600 – saving around 71% versus Australia.
  • Accredited facilities: Major centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental hold JCI and ISO safety certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Base surgery is cheaper. However, the real value in Turkish packages is the extended recovery support. Some clinics, like Lokman Hekim Akay, offer packages with up to 21 nights of hotel stay. These packages also include full board. This long-term stay is vital for initial device mapping before the flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Families appreciate the well-organised international departments that provide translators and VIP transport for every appointment. Patients mention that the total cost remains fixed from the start. It covers everything from pre-op tests to meals for companions in Turkey.

What brands or models of cochlear implants are used in Turkish clinics?

Turkish clinics use globally recognised, FDA-approved cochlear implant brands including Cochlear, Med-El, and Advanced Bionics. Specialists at JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul and Ankara commonly fit advanced models. These include the Cochlear Nucleus 8 and Kanso 2 series, which deliver high-resolution sound processing.

  • Cochlear (Australia): Clinics frequently implant the Nucleus 8 and off-the-ear Kanso 2 processors.
  • MED-EL (Austria): Popular for electrode arrays that preserve residual hearing during surgical placement.
  • Advanced Bionics (USA): Surgical teams provide HiRes Ultra 3D receivers paired with Naida processors.
  • Specific models: Packages often feature the Kanso 2 500 series or Cochlear Series 600.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer these brands, surgeons like Dr. Yavuz Selim Yildirim at Hisar Hospital have performed 900+ procedures. They use specific international models. This high volume often gives patients quicker access to the latest implant generations. For example, the Nucleus 8 is more readily available than at smaller regional centres.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often surprised by the seamless coordination from airport to theatre in Istanbul. They found clinics provide the same high-tier devices used in Australia. They also offer consistent pricing and helpful language assistance throughout.

What does an all-inclusive cochlear implant package usually include in Turkey?

All-inclusive cochlear implant packages in Turkey bundle the internal device, speech processor, and specialist surgery with essential logistics. These plans usually include Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospital stays, pre-operative imaging such as MRI or CT scans, and VIP airport-to-clinic transfers for smooth travel.

  • Device hardware: Includes the internal receiver and external processor from brands like Cochlear or Med-El.
  • Clinical diagnostics: Covers initial ENT consultations, audiology testing, and high-resolution temporal bone CT scans.
  • Hospital stay: Provides 1–3 nights in a private room with meals for the patient.
  • Support services: Includes personal interpreters for medical appointments and 24-hour nursing care during hospitalisation.
  • Post-op follow-up: Covers wound checks and initial device activation sessions before returning to Australia.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer a 2-day hospital stay, Lokman Hekim Akay Hospital provides packages with 21 hotel nights included in the price. This extended stay is vital for cochlear patients. It allows the audiology team to perform multiple mapping sessions and follow-up checks within the critical first two weeks.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how coordinators organise every step from airport pickups to hotel-hospital transfers. Meals for both the patient and their companion in Turkish hospitals make the international experience far less stressful.
