It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

My biggest shock was that the initial agreement was completely different from the reality. After I arrived, I was forced to accept new prices and couldn’t go to another clinic. I had Botox injections for my forehead and frown lines, and of course it’s still too early to judge the results. That said, the clinic itself was good and the doctor took the time to carefully mark the injection points, which I really appreciated. However, my experience with the staff was extremely poor. One must also take into account the additional costs of accommodation, flights and transport. For this reason, based on this experience, I would not recommend that any patient travel to Turkey for treatment.

What I particularly valued was the continuity of care from the surgeon
If you're researching laser eye surgery, the small details of the process are what matter. I opted for the TransPRK procedure. The clinic's protocol involved operating on each of my eyes on separate days, which I viewed as a careful and methodical approach to the surgery. What I particularly valued was the continuity of care from the surgeon. They personally handled every single one of my checkups, from the first consultation to all the follow-up appointments, ensuring I was seeing the same expert throughout. That was important. As I'm still in the early recovery phase, having a clear aftercare guide has been essential, and the one provided was very comprehensive. From a practical standpoint, every aspect of the service, including the surgeon, the support staff, and the clinic environment, was well-executed and professional.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic. I underwent a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) on my left eye, and I now feel better than I had expected. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the coordinating doctor, Sergey, and Dr Abdallah ÖZCAYA for their expertise and responsible approach. I particularly remember how Dr ÖZCAYA personally checked on me after the operation — this gave me confidence and peace of mind. The clinic was always available, and there were no additional costs. A special thank you to the interpreter, Daniela, for her excellent translation and constant help with communication.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was incredibly positive. From the moment I reached out, my coordinator Olya provided exceptional support, always available and guiding me through every step. The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

FAQ about Ophthalmology in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are there specific requirements or preparation rules for patients planning eye surgery in Turkey?

Patients planning eye surgery in Turkey must meet strict medical criteria and follow specific preparation protocols. Essential rules include providing current prescriptions and stabilising vision for 12 months. Patients must also pass scans at JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital. These standards help maintain clinical safety.

  • Clinical screening: Provide recent corneal and vision records to clinics before booking the procedure.
  • Contact lens rule: Stop wearing contacts for 2–3 weeks before the initial in-person evaluation.
  • Candidacy checks: Surgeons at clinics like Dunyagoz Etiler treat 60,000+ patients and require stable prescriptions.
  • Travel planning: Allocate 3–7 days for pre-op scans, the surgery, and critical follow-up examinations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye hospitals often operate as specialised networks rather than general wards. Large centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Atakoy perform 49,000+ procedures annually. This volume allows them to invest in brands like Schwind Amaris lasers. Patients should look for these single-specialty hubs for more refined intake processes.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the surgery itself is quick and painless. However, they emphasise the necessity of following the month-long eye drop schedule. Many found that dedicated translators in Turkey helped manage the transition between diagnostics and theatre smoothly.

Is it safe to undergo eye surgery in Turkey?

Eye surgery in Turkey is safe when performed by experienced specialists in facilities holding JCI or ISO certifications. Turkish ophthalmologists treat over 60,000 international patients annually. They use FDA-approved platforms like Schwind Amaris and Zeiss for LASIK, cataract replacement, and corneal implants.

  • Technological standard: Clinics use systems like Wavefront mapping and Femtosecond laser platforms.
  • Surgical expertise: Leading surgeons like Dr Ahmet Satici have performed over 20,000 successful procedures.
  • Accredited facilities: Premier hospitals like Memorial Şişli were the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation.
  • Clinical volume: Major networks like Dunyagoz treat 60,000+ patients yearly across 14 specialised departments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that high-volume clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Etiler are preferred by international dignitaries. These centres maintain 24/7 care across 14 specialised departments. This allows them to handle complex cases that smaller clinics might not be equipped to manage.

Patient Consensus: Patients from Australia and New Zealand note the coordination between airport transfers and clinic appointments. They frequently mention achieving 20/20 vision within days of laser treatment. Most appreciate the professional focus on eye health over sales.

Am I an eligible candidate for laser eye surgery in Turkey?

Eligibility for laser eye surgery in Turkey depends on prescription stability, corneal thickness, and age. Candidates must be over 18 with a stable prescription for 12 months. Turkish specialists at JCI-accredited hospitals use diagnostics like autorefractometry to confirm candidacy during intensive pre-operative screenings.

  • Prescription limits: Corrects myopia up to -10.00 diopters and hyperopia to +6.00 diopters.
  • Corneal health: Sufficient thickness is vital for LASIK. Thinner corneas may require PRK.
  • Medical exclusions: Uncontrolled diabetes, pregnancy, or active glaucoma typically disqualify patients from treatment.
  • Technology access: Clinics use systems like the Schwind Amaris laser for precise tissue reshaping.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows single-specialty centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler treat 66,000 patients annually. These high-volume clinics often provide on-site translation and specialised international departments. This infrastructure allows complex diagnostics to be completed within a single day.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report feeling reassured when surgeons provide honest assessments about their suitability. Many describe a smooth journey with included airport transfers. They also note that clear distance vision was often achieved within 24 hours.

Will I be awake during laser eye surgery in Turkey, and does it hurt?

Patients remain awake during laser eye surgery in Turkey. The procedure requires gazing at a target light to align the laser. Surgeons use anaesthetic eye drops to numb the surface, making the treatment virtually painless. Most procedures, like LASIK or SMILE, take under 15 minutes per eye.

  • Anaesthetic drops: Specialists apply numbing drops to prevent sharp pain during the operation.
  • Pressure sensation: Patients typically feel slight pressure or tugging for 20–30 seconds.
  • Safety automation: Lasers at clinics like Dunyagoz shut off instantly if eyes move.
  • Post-op comfort: Mild grittiness or watering usually resolves within 4–6 hours of surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler treat 66,000+ patients annually. Our data shows these specialist hospitals often have dedicated international departments. A translator is present in the theatre to guide patients through every sensation. This helps reduce anxiety for those who are awake.

Patient Consensus: Patients report the experience is quick and painless. They often describe the sensation as pressure or seeing bright lights. Many Australians mention being able to sightsee in Istanbul just 24 hours after treatment. This is possible despite initial temporary grittiness or blurry vision.

How long must I stay in Turkey after my eye procedure?

Patients typically stay in Turkey for 3 to 7 days after eye surgery. Laser procedures like LASIK often allow travel within 48 hours. Complex cases like cataract surgery or corneal transplants require 5 to 7 days. This allows for mandatory post-operative checks and stabilisation.

  • Laser procedures: LASIK and SMILE patients generally stay 2–3 days for next-day review.
  • Cataract surgery: Surgeons recommend 5–7 days to monitor intraocular lens stability and pressure.
  • Corneal procedures: Stays of 7 days allow for surface regeneration or stitch removal if required.
  • Clinical follow-up: All procedures require a mandatory day 1 check-up before clearing international travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital or Dunyagoz Istanbul Atakoy often bundle a 3-night hotel stay into cataract packages. This matches the critical window for detecting early pressure spikes. These options keep patients near specialists like Prof. Ahmet Satici during the highest-risk recovery days.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report feeling comfortable following surgery. They note that having translators and transfers arranged allows them to focus on their vision recovery. Many highlight that their vision reached 20/20 within 24 hours. Even so, they appreciated the structured follow-up visits before flying home.

Can both eyes be treated on the same day for eye surgery in Turkey?

Patients can have surgery on both eyes on the same day in Turkey for laser procedures like LASIK and SMILE. Specialists typically treat one eye then the other in a single session. Lens replacements often require a few days between eyes to monitor healing.

  • Laser surgery: LASIK and SMILE routinely treat both eyes during one 15–30 minute appointment.
  • Lens replacement: Surgeons often space cataract surgeries 3–7 days apart to fine-tune prescriptions.
  • Bilateral safety: Simultaneous lens surgery uses separate sterile setups for each eye to prevent contamination.
  • Stay duration: Laser patients need 3–4 days in Turkey while lens surgery takes 7–10 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler treat 66,000+ patients annually. These major hubs offer on-site diagnostics like Sirius corneal analysis. This technology allows surgeons to confirm suitability for same-day laser surgery within hours of arrival. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision by the first day after bilateral treatment.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the process surprisingly quick and professional in Turkey. Many from Australia report seeing clearly just 24 hours later and enjoying local sightseeing without complications. High standards and clear communication with coordinators make the journey smooth and well-organised.

When can I resume normal activities like working or wearing makeup after eye surgery in Turkey?

Recovery timelines in Turkey depend on the specific surgery. Most patients return to light desk work within 2 to 7 days. Eye makeup requires more caution. Patients must avoid mascara and eyeliner for 2 to 4 weeks. This prevents infections and irritation during the healing process.

  • Work resumption: Desk-based or screen work is usually possible 2 to 7 days after surgery.
  • Makeup timeline: Foundation is safe after 2 days, but eye makeup requires 2 weeks minimum.
  • Environmental caution: Stay away from dusty or physical job sites for at least 4 weeks.
  • Follow-up schedule: Clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital typically require 1-day and 3-day post-operative check-ups.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows high-volume centres like Dunyagoz, which handles 60,000+ patients annually, often provide comprehensive post-op kits. These kits contain specific preservative-free drops for screen work. Using these helps manage light sensitivity and grit. This makes an earlier return to work more comfortable.

Patient Consensus: Patients report clear distance vision by the next day. However, grittiness and blurring are common initially. Many recommend taking extra time off for screen-heavy work. Bringing sunglasses helps handle the bright light in Istanbul during recovery.

Do Turkish eye clinics offer comprehensive medical travel packages?

Turkish eye clinics provide all-inclusive ophthalmology packages. These cover surgical fees, preoperative testing, and postoperative care. Bundles often include airport transfers, translators, and 4-star accommodation in Istanbul and Antalya. Specialists perform procedures such as LASIK and trifocal lens replacements using femtosecond laser technology.

  • Standard inclusions: Bundles usually cover surgical fees, local anaesthesia, and basic preoperative scans.
  • Transport services: VIP airport-hotel-clinic transfers are standard in packages at Valued Med Hub Hospitals.
  • Accommodation: Multi-day hotel stays, such as 3 days, are often bundled with surgery.
  • Language support: Certified translators accompany patients throughout the clinical process to help with communication.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for the lowest price, the real value is found in specialised single-specialty networks. For example, Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler treats 66,000+ patients annually. It maintains a dedicated department for international clients. This high volume allows these facilities to offer specialised diagnostics, such as Corneal Scheimpflug analysis, within the standard package price.

Patient Consensus: Patients from Australia and New Zealand note that the coordination between airport pickups and appointments makes travel stress-free. They often highlight the professionalism of translators and the immediate results from surgeries like femto-iLasik or lens replacements.
