How Much Does LASEK eye surgery Cost in Republic of Korea in AUD?

LASEK eye surgery in the Republic of Korea typically costs from AUD $1,429 to AUD $2,286. The total price depends on the chosen laser technology, surgeon experience, and specific clinic location within Seoul or Busan. Patients save around 68% by travelling to South Korea from Australia, where this procedure costs AUD $5,857 on average. Standard packages often include detailed diagnostic exams, ophthalmologist consultations, and a PRP session to speed up healing.

  • AI-customised LASEK: often costs more than standard protocols due to advanced diagnostic data mapping.
  • Seoul clinic premiums: surgery in high-end Seoul districts like Gangnam may cost 15–20% more than Busan.
  • Advanced "Two-Day" protocols: typically command a premium for faster recovery and specialised post-operative care.
  • Additional DNA testing: may add a minor fee if genetic screening for corneal conditions is required.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centres like Bright Eye Clinic provide exceptional value. They have performed over 100,000 vision correction cases using advanced systems like VisuMax. For instance, Gangnam ID Ophthalmic Clinic offers packages around A$1,300 using AI deep data. In contrast, Gangnam Grand Eye Clinic features surgeons like Lee Young Seob, who has performed 15,000+ surgeries. These specialised clinics offer far deeper expertise than many general hospitals at very competitive rates.

I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched
My main worry before the lateral canthoplasty was asymmetry, knowing how delicate the procedure is, but I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched. It's such a relief. The surgeon and the entire staff provided wonderful care from start to finish. While I'm still in the early stages of healing, the shape is already very close to my goal. The recovery has been manageable. The biggest challenge has been sleeping upright, but that's a small thing compared to the results. I'm so glad I chose this clinic for my procedure and feel very looked after.

Rude staff. And the trip turned out to be in vain. So much time, effort and money was spent. Documents were preliminarily sent, and extracts available at that time, treatment passed, etc. They invited me to the examination and obtain a preliminary treatment plan, although it was clear to the provided procurers that treatment was impossible. They did the same thing that they had sent earlier, shrugged their hands and said Excuse me, we can’t help ...

FAQ about LASEK eye surgery in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is LASEK eye surgery in South Korea safe for Australian medical tourists?

LASEK eye surgery in South Korea is safe for Australians. The country's high-volume clinics hold Joint Commission International (JCI) and KOIHA accreditations. Leading Seoul surgeons perform 20,000 to 50,000+ procedures. They often use AI-powered ID Deep Data or Slim Fit LASEK for thinned corneas.

  • Experience volume: Bright Eye Clinic has performed 400,000+ total vision correction procedures.
  • Specialist credentials: Dr Chong Gi Von has helped 500,000+ patients restore their vision.
  • Safety standards: Severance Hospital and Gangnam Severance both hold JCI accreditation.
  • Diagnostics: Clinics often perform 60+ pre-operative tests to check patient suitability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While LASEK in South Korea is a sophisticated procedure, it requires more patience than SMILE or LASIK. Bookimed data shows LASEK is the preferred safe choice for patients with thin corneas. High-end Seoul clinics often bundle PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) sessions into A$1,600 packages to accelerate epithelial healing.

Patient Consensus: Visitors to South Korea should prepare for light sensitivity and vision fluctuations during the first fortnight. Plan a 5-day stay to attend essential 24-hour and 3-day follow-up appointments before flying home.

What is the difference between LASIK and LASEK surgery in South Korea?

The main difference between LASIK and LASEK in South Korea is how surgeons access the cornea for laser reshaping. LASIK creates a thicker corneal flap for rapid recovery. LASEK removes the thin outer epithelial layer, which is safer for patients with thin corneas.

  • Flap thickness: LASIK creates an 80-120 micron flap using lasers like the VISUMAX 800.
  • Structural safety: LASEK (surface ablation) preserves more corneal tissue than traditional LASIK.
  • Patient suitability: Surgeons recommend LASEK for athletes, military personnel, or those with high astigmatism.
  • Visual recovery: LASIK vision clears within 24 hours, while LASEK vision stabilises over several weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: LASEK is the budget-friendly choice, starting at A$1,300. However, leading Seoul clinics like Bright Eye Clinic now prioritise SMILE technology. It offers the corneal safety of LASEK without the week-long blurry recovery. If the budget allows, SMILE represents the modern gold standard in Korea.

Patient Consensus: South Korea is excellent for eye surgery. However, patients having LASEK should plan to stay 7 days. Patients advise stocking up on preservative-free drops. This is because post-operative dryness is common regardless of the technique.

How long does recovery after LASEK eye surgery in South Korea take?

LASEK recovery in South Korea typically involves an initial 3-day healing phase. This is followed by 1–4 weeks of vision stabilisation. Physical discomfort typically resolves by day 4. However, achieving final sharp vision can take 3–6 months. Patients must remain in Korea for follow-up checks at 14 and 30 days.

  • Initial phase: First 3 days involve temporary vision blurring and light sensitivity.
  • Physical healing: Pain and discomfort generally resolve around the 4-day mark.
  • Vision stabilisation: Sight usually clears within 1–4 weeks after the procedure.
  • Expert follow-up: Surgeons require in-person check-ups at 2 weeks and 1 month.
  • Full results: Complete visual stabilisation often takes between 3 and 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: LASEK is the most affordable option, starting from $1,000. However, it has the longest recovery. South Korean clinics like Bright Eye Clinic have performed 400,000+ procedures. Yet surgeons there often recommend SMILE laser for patients flying home within 7 days.

Patient Consensus: Expect 3 days of isolation in a dark room with no screens. During this time, the eyes heal. Vision stays hazy for weeks in South Korea. So bring corticosteroid drops and high-quality sunglasses for the flight home.

Which clinics in South Korea are best for LASEK surgery for international patients?

South Korea is a global hub for vision correction, with Seoul clinics using AI-driven technology and laser systems. International patients favour high-volume centres in Gangnam for LASEK. These clinics provide English coordinators and one-day diagnostic-to-surgery services. They also perform 70+ pre-operative eye tests to confirm candidacy.

  • Technological variety: Clinics offer AI-powered ID Deep Data LASEK and Slim Fit options for thin corneas.
  • High-volume expertise: BGN Eye Hospital has performed 346,000+ vision correction surgeries since founding in 2000.
  • Credentialled surgeons: Dr Cheon Hyeon-cheol at Bright Eye Clinic holds American Academy of Ophthalmology membership.
  • Patient support: Major centres like BGN Eye Hospital provide free translators and 1-day hotel stays.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While LASEK remains a budget-friendly choice starting at $1,000, data shows a shift towards SMILE Pro. BGN Eye Hospital recently installed the VISUMAX 800 laser specifically to meet this demand. If choosing LASEK, look for clinics like Gangnam Brand Eye Clinic. They bundle PRP sessions into the A$1,600 price to accelerate corneal healing.

Patient Consensus: International patients visiting South Korea suggest staying 5–7 days for LASEK to manage the initial healing and follow-up. While SMILE is faster, those with thin corneas found the 70-test screenings in Seoul essential. These thorough tests are vital for safety. Translators help navigate the day-after check-ups before flying back to Australia.

What does a typical LASEK surgery package in South Korea include?

LASEK surgery packages in South Korea provide a comprehensive service. They cover preoperative diagnostics, the laser procedure for both eyes, and essential postoperative care. These bundles typically include comprehensive eye mapping, surgeon fees, and initial medications. Prices range from $1,000 to $1,600.

  • Preoperative diagnostics: Comprehensive testing of corneal thickness, pupil size, and dryness is standard.
  • Surgical procedure: Packages cover laser application for both eyes and local anaesthesia fees.
  • Postoperative care: Mandatory next-day follow-up appointments and protective healing lenses are always included.
  • Language support: Clinics like BGN Eye Hospital provide free English translators for international patients.
  • Supplementary treatments: Some bundles, like those at Gangnam Brand Eye Clinic, include PRP sessions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While South Korea is famous for SMILE technology, LASEK remains a vital option for patients with thin corneas. Data shows that high-volume centres often bundle diagnostic mapping into the base price. Bright Eye Clinic, which serves 400,000+ patients, is one such centre. This confirms 100% suitability before any laser touches the eye.

Patient Consensus: In Gangnam clinics, testing and surgery often happen on the same day. Patients value this streamlined process. Most confirm that initial eye drops and protective sleeping goggles are provided. They are part of the standard care.
