Now, my vision is considered perfect by local standards, and I'm feeling better than expected
The coordinator was always in touch and handled all communication with the clinic, so I didn't have to spend my own time or energy organizing anything. It made the whole experience easy, even when I had to reschedule my appointment several times. The clinic itself was extremely professional and modern, with state-of-the-art equipment and specialists who speak English. I had the SMILE procedure on one eye to correct a lifetime of astigmatism and worsening vision. Now, my vision is considered perfect by local standards, and I'm feeling better than expected. The clinic has stayed in touch since the surgery. My advice is simple: just come to the clinic and trust the professionals. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance; just show up.
The coordinator was always in touch and handled all communication with the clinic, so I didn’t have to spend my own time, energy, or effort on organizing anything. It made the whole experience incredibly easy and stress-free. I had to reschedule my appointment several times, and thanks to the coordinator, everything was arranged smoothly each time. The clinic itself exceeded all my expectations. Everything was extremely professional, modern, and aesthetically beautiful. The equipment is state-of-the-art, and the specialists are highly qualified and speak English, which made communication very comfortable. I had lived with astigmatism and worsening vision my entire life, and now, according to Korean standards, my vision is considered perfect. I’m incredibly happy with the result. I’m very grateful for the entire experience and would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone who is planning to improve their vision.

I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched
My main worry before the lateral canthoplasty was asymmetry, knowing how delicate the procedure is, but I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched. It's such a relief. The surgeon and the entire staff provided wonderful care from start to finish. While I'm still in the early stages of healing, the shape is already very close to my goal. The recovery has been manageable. The biggest challenge has been sleeping upright, but that's a small thing compared to the results. I'm so glad I chose this clinic for my procedure and feel very looked after.

Rude staff. And the trip turned out to be in vain. So much time, effort and money was spent. Documents were preliminarily sent, and extracts available at that time, treatment passed, etc. They invited me to the examination and obtain a preliminary treatment plan, although it was clear to the provided procurers that treatment was impossible. They did the same thing that they had sent earlier, shrugged their hands and said Excuse me, we can’t help ...

FAQ about Femtosecond laser in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How fast is recovery after femtosecond laser surgery in Korea?

Recovery after femtosecond laser surgery in Korea is exceptionally rapid. Most patients achieve clear vision and return to daily activities within 24–48 hours. Techniques like SMILE Pro at BGN Eye Hospital use a 10-second laser application. This results in minimal downtime and functional stability within just 1 day.

  • Immediate improvement: Vision typically reaches 65–70% clarity within 12–24 hours post-procedure.
  • SMILE Pro speed: Flap-free keyhole incisions allow patients to resume work the following day.
  • Visual stability: Focus reaches approximately 85% by 48 hours for most Korean clinic patients.
  • Safe travel: Specialists recommend staying 2–3 days before flying to attend post-operative check-ups.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korean clinics like BGN Eye Hospital lead in speed by using the VISUMAX 800 laser. This technology cuts laser time to just 10 seconds. Data shows this significantly reduces the 3-hour post-op blurriness window seen in older femtosecond systems.

Patient Consensus: Vision improves so quickly in Korea that many patients walk unassisted shortly after surgery. Screen use and driving are usually comfortable by the next morning. Blurriness and light sensitivity typically subside within a few hours.

Why is Korea a popular destination for femtosecond laser eye surgery?

South Korea is a global leader in laser eye surgery due to its early adoption of the ZEISS VisuMax 800 laser and vast surgical volumes. Clinics in Seoul and Busan offer flapless SMILE PRO techniques that provide visual recovery within 24–48 hours at A$2,200–A$3,400.

  • Advanced technology: Centres use the VISUMAX 800 laser for SMILE PRO, taking only 10 seconds.
  • High surgical volume: BGN Eye Hospital has performed over 346,000 vision correction surgeries since 2000.
  • Expert specialists: Dr Cheon Hyeon-cheol at Bright Eye Clinic has completed over 30,000 SMILE procedures.
  • Rapid recovery: Patients typically return to normal activities and achieve 70% visual clarity within 24 hours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korea offers massive savings of approximately 67% compared to Australia. However, the real value lies in the specialised techniques. Some clinics offer Slim Fit Lasik with an ultra-thin 0.08 mm flap. These specialised approaches allow patients with thinner corneas to qualify for laser surgery safely.

Patient Consensus: Korea provides technology like the ZEISS VisuMax 800. This enables painless procedures that allow tourists to resume sightseeing the next day. Vision improves steadily over 48 hours. However, some notice temporary halos or blurriness with close-up objects during the first weeks.

What is the difference between SMILE and SMILE Pro in Korea?

SMILE and SMILE Pro in Korea differ primarily in laser technology, speed, and precision. While both are flapless procedures, SMILE Pro uses the ZEISS VisuMax 800 laser. This system reduces laser suction time to about 10 seconds per eye. This improves safety and patient comfort.

  • Laser system: Pro uses VisuMax 800, while standard SMILE uses the older VisuMax 500.
  • Laser speed: Suction time drops from 25–30 seconds to under 10 seconds with Pro.
  • Tracking: SMILE Pro features real-time 6D eye tracking to automatically follow pupil movement.
  • Astigmatism correction: SMILE Pro effectively manages higher astigmatism levels, often exceeding -3.00 dioptres.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like BGN Eye Hospital often include perks for international patients. This hospital has performed 346,000+ surgeries. SMILE Pro costs more. Some packages bundle complimentary corneal cross-linking or a free 1-day hotel stay. This added value makes the premium price more competitive than the $4,200 Australian average.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Korea find SMILE Pro much easier. The laser finishes before they feel any pressure. Most report clear vision the same day. They appreciate the faster recovery for travel.
