Doctors at the highest level
PLUSES Doctors at the highest level...professionalism, attention, responsibility felt during the whole stay...nothing unnecessary was said...no promises were made that could not be realised later...we were very satisfied with the results of their work.... Medical equipment may not be the latest models, but the penultimate certainly ... The food is very tasty... The facilities in the ward create a comfortable stay... The location of the clinic is good... Many hotels of different categories within walking distance..... MINUSES The medical staff and service staff (cleaning of the ward) wish to be better...the clinic needs a little more review of the process of care of medical staff for patients...at night when the patient before surgery or after surgery should gain strength and rest, begins frequent going to the room...then the temperature to measure, then the pressure, then remembering about the drip to connect the next or remove the forgotten.... Another disadvantage is the proposal-proform with an indication of what services are included in the paid amount, and which are not ... I would like a more specific list...taking into account that the treatment plan has changed, the amount to be paid has also changed, and there is always a question whether it is paid or whether it is necessary to pay additionally...which causes inconvenience and worries "whether you have enough money".... The general impression of the clinic was good...despite the disadvantages.....
Professionalism of the medical team
Nursing and housekeeping.

"The result of the surgery is excellent
The clinic is very large, the conditions in the room were very good, there was even a folding chair for an attendant. Food was brought for both of us. The doctor aroused confidence from the very first consultation. But also a whole team was engaged in my operation and they are all great professionals. Nurses have also always been very helpful.

FAQ about Scoliosis surgery in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Scoliosis surgery in Turkey maintains an 85% to 95% success rate for spinal alignment. Leading JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul achieve up to 92% success in long-term pain relief. Posterior segmental instrumentation typically reduces the Cobb angle by 50% to 70%.

  • Curvature correction: Surgeons target 85% to 95% efficacy for spinal realignment based on baseline flexibility.
  • Pain relief: Clinical data shows 90% to 92% effectiveness in reducing chronic back pain post-recovery.
  • Advanced techniques: Dual-rod procedures provide 95% success by correcting spinal curvature and rotation.
  • Nerve safety: Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) tracks signals in real-time to protect spinal cord function.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success rates are highest at centres of excellence like the Liv Spine Centre led by Dr Cagatay Ozturk. Data shows surgeon volume is the most reliable predictor of success. Experienced Turkish specialists often perform 100+ scoliosis corrections annually. This volume far exceeds that of typical general orthopaedic surgeons.

Patient Consensus: Patients report high satisfaction with the precision of spinal realignment in Turkey. They suggest getting expected correction ranges and rehabilitation plans in writing for a smooth experience.

What advanced technologies do Turkish spine surgeons use for scoliosis surgery?

Turkish spine surgeons use robotic systems, 3D navigation, and intraoperative neuromonitoring to perform precise scoliosis corrections. Facilities like Central Hospital integrate AI-powered imaging and robotic platforms. These technologies support correction rates between 65% and 90%. They also protect delicate spinal nerves during complex realignments.

  • Robotic assistance: Surgeons use platforms like Mazor X for 99.5% screw placement accuracy.
  • 3D navigation: O-arm scanners provide real-time GPS-like mapping of the patient's spinal anatomy.
  • Neuromonitoring: Specialists track electrical signals to prevent nerve damage during the correction process.
  • AI imaging: 3 Tesla MRI and AI-powered systems improve preoperative planning precision.
  • Patient-specific guides: Dr Halil Can Gemalmaz uses 3D-planned surgical guides for complex deformities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Robotic systems get the headlines, but 3D printing and monitoring are the real game-changers. Surgeons like Dr Ali Osman Mucuoglu use 3D-printed spine models to practise complex steps before theatre. This level of preparation typically results in shorter surgery times and better outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the thoroughness of the 7-day hospital stays. They also appreciate the precision of the 3D-guided procedures. Many mention feeling reassured by the detailed imaging and extensive preoperative testing provided in Istanbul.

When can I walk and return to daily activities after having scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically start walking with medical assistance 24 to 48 hours after scoliosis surgery. Most resume light daily routines within 4 to 6 weeks. A full return to non-strenuous activities takes 3 to 6 months as the spinal fusion heals. Clinics in Istanbul and Bursa provide specialised physiotherapy for safe early mobility.

  • Hospital stay: Turkish packages often include 7 days in hospital for monitoring and pain management.
  • Initial mobility: Nurses assist with the log-roll technique and short laps within 48 hours.
  • Flight readiness: International patients generally stay in Turkey for 10 to 14 days before flying.
  • Sedentary work: Returning to desk-based activities or school is usually possible within 4 to 6 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows that leading Turkish centres, such as Central Hospital, include 24-hour nursing and nutritionist-led meals in their surgical packages. Having professional support for a full week post-op is vital for international patients. This extended hospital stay helps establish correct movement patterns before the long flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Walking begins with short laps in the hospital just days after surgery in Turkey. Patients note that basic self-care becomes easier within 2 weeks. However, support is still needed for travel. Recovery varies, so planning for help with transfers and home tasks is essential for a smooth transition.

How long will I need to stay in Turkey after my scoliosis surgery?

Patients should stay in Turkey for 14 to 21 days after scoliosis surgery. This allows for 7 to 10 days of hospital monitoring. It also includes 7 to 14 days of local recovery before flying back to Australia. Surgeons will issue a Fit to Fly certificate once the patient is stable.

  • Hospital stay: Central Hospital packages include 7 days for drain management and pain control.
  • Surgical techniques: Surgeons use robotic-assisted or minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to help recovery.
  • Travel clearance: Doctors provide flight clearance after checking wound healing and hardware stability around day 14.
  • Clinic options: JCI-accredited facilities such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental serve over 250,000 patients annually.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Central Hospital bundles a 7-day hospital stay with 24-hour nursing and nutritionist-led meals. This inpatient care is vital for Australian patients facing a 20+ hour return flight. It helps provide the stability needed before travelling.

Patient Consensus: Travellers frequently suggest booking airport wheelchair assistance and aisle seats for the long flight home. They recommend staying near the clinic for final X-rays before departing Turkey.

Will my height change after scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically grow 3 to 8 centimetres taller immediately after scoliosis surgery in Turkey. This increase occurs because surgeons straighten the spinal curve, which naturally elongates the torso. Factors like the preoperative Cobb angle and spinal flexibility determine the exact results. Skeletal maturity also influences the final height achieved by specialists.

  • Preoperative curve: Larger curves generally offer more compressed length to regain during straightening.
  • Surgical technique: Posterior segmental instrumentation typically costs from $25,000 to $25,900 in Istanbul.
  • Clinical excellence: Leading centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental maintain JCI accreditation for spinal surgery.
  • Technical precision: Specialists like Professor Halil Can Gemalmaz use 3D planning for complex deformity corrections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics focus on traditional fusion, Central Hospital offers unique packages for scoliosis surgery without implants. Data shows these packages include a 7-day hospital stay and 24-hour nursing care. This longer stay helps with managing early post-operative mobility and posture changes.

Patient Consensus: Many patients notice they look taller and more balanced in Turkey almost immediately. While the centimetre gain varies, the improvement in posture provides a significant confidence boost.

How long does scoliosis surgery in Turkey take?

Scoliosis surgery in Turkey typically takes 3 to 8 hours in the theatre. Duration depends on curvature complexity and the number of vertebrae involved. Specialists at JCI-accredited clinics in Istanbul use robotic systems and 3D planning to improve precision.

  • Patient age: Paediatric procedures often last 1.5–3 hours. Adult reconstructions take 4–6 hours.
  • Surgical technique: Standard spinal fusion generally requires 4–8 hours depending on spine flexibility.
  • Hospital stay: All-inclusive packages often include 7 days in hospital for monitoring and pain management.
  • Travel timeline: Patients should allow 12–15 days in Turkey for final flight clearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While theatre time is brief, Bookimed data shows A$34,500 packages at Central Hospital include 24-hour nursing. This 7-day hospital stay is vital for Australians facing a long flight home. It allows for monitoring after major spinal reconstruction.

Patient Consensus: Expect theatre time to span several hours. Plan for a multi-week trip to cover scans and recovery in Turkey. Confirming inpatient care and transfer arrangements early helps manage logistics and mobility expectations.

Do the titanium screws and rods used in Turkish scoliosis surgery need to be removed?

Titanium screws and rods used in Turkish scoliosis surgery stay in the body permanently. These medical-grade implants provide stability while the spine fuses. Surgeons only recommend removal if rare complications occur. These include deep tissue infection, mechanical failure, or severe chronic pain.

  • Permanent stabilisation: Screws and rods act as scaffolding until the spinal bone successfully fuses.
  • Biocompatible materials: Most implants use medical-grade titanium that is inert and well-tolerated by tissue.
  • Removal criteria: Doctors only perform removal for infections, hardware breakage, or significant localised inflammation.
  • Complex revision: Elective removal is risky and only resolves discomfort in about 40% of cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics focus on standard fusion, some centres like Central Hospital in Istanbul offer scoliosis surgery without implants. This is a specialised choice for specific cases. Always confirm if the procedure is a permanent fusion or a temporary fixation before booking.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that titanium hardware is typically left in long-term without issue. They suggest clarifying the follow-up process in Australia for any potential hardware checks after returning from Turkey.
