My biggest concern was what would happen if there were complications. The only positive was the transport that picks you up and drops you off. After I got home, I became really unwell and was taken to hospital with double sepsis, which doctors suspected was from the newly fitted port. I was rushed into surgery to have what cost me well over 3,000 euros removed. I've emailed in about this and haven't even had one reply. Nobodies even had the decent attitude to even text me back. BEWARE.
The transport that pick u up and drops u off
2 weeks after I got home I became really unwell, I was taken to hospital and it turned out I had double sepsis. They suspected it was from the port that I had fitted as there was puss leaking from it. I was rushed into surgery and had what cost me well over 3,000 euros removed and the doctors who removed it had it tested and both the bacteria that had turned to sepsis was confirmed to be all over it. I've emailed in about this and I ha ent even had 1 reply. I spent 3 and a half weeks in hospital aswell as the costs and inconvenience of getting to Turkey and I have nothing except a big scar where there put it in then spain cut it again to remove it. As I say, nobodies even had the decent attitude to even text me back. BEWARE!!!!!! NO AFTERCARE IF IT GOES WRONG, EVEN IF YOU NEARLY DIE U DONT GET A TEXT.

I feel that we are in safe hands
What worried me most was the uncertainty following the diagnosis. But at the clinic, all the tests required for staging, including the scans, were carried out very quickly, which was a huge relief. The doctors explained the risk category in simple terms, and then we discussed all the possible treatment options in detail. All the specialists are on hand. I feel that we are in safe hands.
Everything's great. I'm really pleased with the results. A professional and meticulous approach. I'd definitely recommend them!

FAQ about Removal of rhabdomyosarcoma in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is rhabdomyosarcoma and how is it treated in Turkey?

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue cancer that develops from skeletal muscle cells. It mainly affects children and adolescents. Turkish oncology centres such as Anadolu Medical Center use multimodal therapy. This combines surgical resection, chemotherapy, and advanced radiation like CyberKnife or TrueBeam STx to treat tumours in the head, neck, and limbs.

  • Treatment protocols: Surgeons follow NCCN guidelines and use chemotherapy to shrink tumours before surgery.
  • Specialist expertise: Professor Hilmi Apak specialises in complex paediatric oncology and high-dose chemotherapy regimens.
  • Advanced technologies: Clinics use Elekta Versa HD and TrueBeam STx for precision radiation therapy.
  • Surgical volume: Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed 25,000+ procedures, including ocular oncology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish hospitals often provide a 60% saving compared to Australian costs. Complex treatment ranges from $45,000 to $92,000. Australia averages $56,300. Istanbul centres like Anadolu Medical Center offer immediate access to multidisciplinary teams and US-affiliated care standards.

Patient Consensus: Turkish private healthcare is excellent. It offers clear upfront pricing for surgery and easy appointments. Patients recommend getting a written multidisciplinary plan before travel. This helps coordinate essential ongoing oncology reviews.

Which hospitals in Turkey are best known for treating rhabdomyosarcoma?

Leading Turkish hospitals for rhabdomyosarcoma include JCI-accredited centres like Anadolu Medical Centre, Memorial Şişli, and Medipol Mega University Hospital. These facilities specialise in multidisciplinary sarcoma care. They combine surgical oncology with precision radiation therapies and paediatric haematology-oncology for complex soft-tissue cases.

  • Anadolu Medical Centre: Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine, offering ESMO-standard interventional oncology and OECI-accredited protocols.
  • Medipol Mega: Awarded Bookimed Patient's Choice for paediatric oncology, featuring CyberKnife and Gamma Knife technology.
  • Memorial Şişli Hospital: First Turkish hospital to earn JCI accreditation, providing high-precision 3T MRI diagnostic mapping.
  • Specialised eye care: Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer at his Istanbul clinic specialises in ocular rhabdomyosarcoma removal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Centre stands out because it holds the IASIOS certificate for interventional oncology. This means they meet strict European standards for minimally invasive tumour treatments. For Australian patients, this level of accreditation means surgical precision that rivals major Western cancer centres.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend choosing large university or flagship hospitals in Turkey for complex tumours. They often suggest places like Anadolu or Memorial. Many mention the convenience of coordinated care. Having oncology, pathology, and imaging in one location significantly eases the treatment journey.

Is surgery always the first step in rhabdomyosarcoma removal in Turkey?

Surgery is not always the first step for rhabdomyosarcoma removal in Turkey. Turkish oncology centres follow international multidisciplinary protocols. The treatment sequence depends on tumour location and size. Some small, accessible tumours are removed immediately. However, many patients start with chemotherapy to shrink the mass before surgery.

  • Multimodal approach: Specialists combine surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to treat complex soft tissue tumours.
  • Initial biopsy: Doctors perform a biopsy first to confirm the exact rhabdomyosarcoma subtype.
  • Sensitive locations: Tumours near the eyes or brain usually require chemotherapy before considering surgery.
  • Organ preservation: Surgeons delay operations if immediate removal would cause significant functional or organ loss.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres like Anadolu Medical Center maintain a formal affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital. This gives patients the same risk-adapted protocols used in the US. The collaboration is particularly vital for rare paediatric tumours. It provides access to specialised tumour board reviews that determine if chemotherapy should precede surgery to improve long-term outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that treatment plans are highly individualised based on the tumour location and surgical risk. Many found that if the cancer involved deep muscle tissue, doctors gave a clear rationale for starting with chemotherapy and radiation instead of immediate surgery.

What support services are available for international patients traveling to Turkey for oncology care?

Turkish oncology centres provide comprehensive support. This includes multidisciplinary tumour board reviews, personal medical coordinators, and multilingual interpreters. Facilities like Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Antalya Hospital offer free remote second opinions, VIP airport transfers, and 5-star guest house accommodation. These services assist international patients throughout their treatment.

  • Clinical coordination: Specialist teams manage multidisciplinary reviews and medical records before arrival.
  • Language support: On-site interpreters provide native-level translation during consultations and daily bedside care.
  • Travel logistics: Clinics assist with medical visa invitation letters and flight itinerary recommendations.
  • Ground transfers: Most hospitals provide complimentary transport between the airport, hotel, and clinic.
  • Accommodation assistance: Patients access discounted rates at nearby 4-star hotels or hospital guest houses.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center stands out for oncology because of its direct affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital. Through this partnership, patients receive American-standard treatment protocols in Istanbul. Their dedicated international desk even includes named coordinators. Patients frequently praise them for managing complex logistics.

Patient Consensus: Turkish private hospitals handle everything from remote second opinions to targeted therapy plans. Patients appreciate the clear communication. They also value the way clinics bundle imaging, surgery, and follow-up care.
