If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day
If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day. My knee feels so much better than it did before the surgery, with much less pain. Of course, recovery isn't instant. The biggest challenge for me right now is some morning stiffness, but once I get moving it improves. The clinic staff and surgeon were professional and answered all my questions about the full replacement, which included the kneecap and a Smith & Nephew implant. I can already bend my knee past 90 degrees easily. It was the right decision.
The coordination of services and language translation was excellent. We felt very cared for and the team listened to our concerns and we had professional, sophisticated and compassionate care.
My one concern was the difficulty we had with one of the translators at the hospital in Istanbul but it was because of difficulty with communication and misunderstanding.

Expert Overview about Coronary artery disease Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is heart surgery for coronary artery disease safe in Turkey?

Heart surgery for coronary artery disease is safe in Turkey. Local centres report high success rates matching international standards. JCI-accredited facilities use robotic and minimally invasive techniques. Specialist surgeons often have 20+ years of experience and international training in the UK or Europe.

  • Accredited facilities: Memorial Sisli was the first Turkish hospital to earn JCI accreditation.
  • Surgical volume: Dr Ali Fedakar at Hisar Hospital performed 4,000+ open-heart surgeries.
  • Specialised technology: Memorial Goztepe uses da Vinci XI robotic systems for cardiac procedures.
  • International expertise: Dr Batur Gonenc Kanar trained at Royal Brompton and Harefield in London.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish cardiac surgery safety is reinforced by high-volume clinical practice. Dr Hasan Yucel at Medicana Sivas has performed 10,000+ valve replacements. This repetition at major hubs like Hisar Hospital, serving 500,000+ patients annually, prepares teams for complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the surgical precision and confidence of specialists in Turkey. Many emphasise the professional care from coordinators. They suggest staying for several weeks post-surgery to allow for a safe flight home.

What treatment options are available for coronary artery disease in Turkey?

Turkey offers treatments for coronary artery disease including bypass surgery and cardiac stenting. Specialists use drug-eluting stents and minimally invasive bypass techniques. JCI-accredited facilities like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Memorial Şişli Hospital provide diagnosis and surgical care in Istanbul.

  • Surgical interventions: Specialists perform bypass surgery with beating heart and minimally invasive techniques.
  • Imaging: Clinics use IVUS, FFR and OCT for precise coronary artery assessment.
  • Robotic surgery: Memorial Göztepe Hospital uses the da Vinci XI system for cardiac procedures.
  • Stent procedures: Doctors like Dr Mehmet Saygi have performed over 300 stent interventions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish cardiac centres show high clinical volume with over 390 specialised clinics. Dr Ali Fedakar at Hisar Hospital has performed approximately 4,000 open heart surgeries. This high frequency helps surgeons handle complex redo valve surgeries and heart transplants with expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the responsiveness of care teams in Turkey. They appreciate the use of robotic systems for smaller incisions. Successful stent and bypass results lead families to recommend these cardiac departments.

What is the typical recovery timeline after coronary artery disease treatment in Turkey?

Recovery after coronary artery bypass surgery in Turkey involves a 5 to 7-day hospital stay. Light activity typically resumes after 4 weeks. Stent procedures allow faster recovery. Most patients go home within 2 days and start light tasks after 1 week.

  • Bypass hospitalisation: Patients stay 1 to 2 days in the ICU and 5 days in wards.
  • Stent recovery: Most return to light activities 3 to 10 days after the procedure.
  • Travel readiness: International patients should wait 4 to 6 weeks before flying after bypass surgery.
  • Full healing: Bypass surgery recovery spans several months for high-intensity exercise and heavy lifting.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish cardiac centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Memorial Bahçelievler often use beating-heart or robotic bypass techniques. These approaches can reduce intensive care time. Surgeons such as Dr Ali Fedakar have performed over 4,000 open-heart surgeries. He often favours small incisions to help patients recover faster.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report feeling broad functional recovery 6 to 12 weeks after bypass surgery. Tiredness often lasts longer than expected. They find arranging follow-up care in Australia essential for managing medication and wound checks.

How soon can I fly home to Australia after coronary artery disease treatment in Turkey?

Patients can usually fly 5 days after an uncomplicated stent or angioplasty. Major procedures like coronary bypass surgery require at least 2 to 4 weeks before a long-haul flight. Surgeons must issue a written fit-to-fly certificate. Travel involves risks like dehydration and immobility.

  • Angioplasty recovery: Fly safely 5 days after simple stent procedures without complications.
  • Bypass surgery: Wait at least 14 days, though 4 weeks is considered safer.
  • Clinical clearance: Obtain written travel approval from surgeons at JCI-accredited clinics in Istanbul.
  • Long-haul focus: Flight times to Australia require extra caution regarding blood clot prevention.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey serves over 23,000 international patients annually for cardiac care. Experts like Associate Professor Ibrahim Halil Tanboga at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental trained in London. This expertise ensures Turkish teams understand the physiological demands of the 14-plus hour flights back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey emphasise getting clear recovery timelines before surgery. They recommend checking walking comfort and confirming all medication schedules are set before the long trip home.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for coronary artery disease treatment?

Patients should plan for a 7 to 14-day stay in Turkey for coronary artery disease treatment. This timeframe covers diagnostic imaging, surgical procedures, and recovery before flying. JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul and Antalya often arrange travel-ready clearance within 2 weeks.

  • Stenting stay: Expect 1–3 days in hospital for angioplasty or stent placement.
  • Bypass duration: Coronary artery bypass surgery usually requires 5–7 days of hospitalisation.
  • Travel clearance: Most surgeons advise a 10–14 day total stay for post-op safety.
  • Initial tests: Diagnostics like ECG, bloods, and heart ultrasounds take 1–2 days.

Bookimed Insight: Bypass surgery traditionally requires longer recovery. However, centres like Medipol Mega use the da Vinci XI robotic system for robotic shunting. This minimally invasive approach reduces hospital stays. It allows patients to move to hotel recovery sooner than conventional open-heart surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the pre-operative process very efficient. Complex tests and consultations are often completed in a single day. Many suggest choosing clinics like Hisar Hospital or Medipol. These clinics provide coordinators to help navigate medication and follow-up plans before flying home.

Are there English-speaking medical teams available for patients seeking coronary artery disease treatment in Turkey?

Turkish cardiac centres provide English-speaking medical teams for coronary artery disease. Major JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul and Antalya employ specialists trained in the United Kingdom or United States. These clinics have dedicated international departments. Personal coordinators manage communication throughout the treatment journey.

  • Expert training: Professors like Dr Gokhan Ertas completed fellowships at leading European heart centres.
  • Academic background: Dr Alp Burak Catakoglu graduated from the English Medicine Programme in Istanbul.
  • International coordination: Anadolu Medical Center provides named patient coordinators and interpreters for non-Turkish speakers.
  • Clinical volume: Hisar Hospital Intercontinental treats 250,000 patients annually with a 120-doctor team.
  • Australia-specific care: Valued Med Hub Hospitals explicitly serves patients from Australia, Canada, and the USA.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many surgeons speak English, ward staff fluency varies. Centres like Anadolu Medical Center pair patients with specific coordinators. This helps keep medical instructions clear during rounds. Professor Dr Batur Gonenc Kanar represents Turkey at the European Heart Rhythm Association.

Patient Consensus: Patients trust specific doctors and coordinators for communication in Turkey. They note it is important to confirm English support across all stages. This includes nursing and discharge. Many highly recommend cardiologists like Dr Burak for their professional and supportive patient care teams.

Which hospitals are considered top facilities for heart surgery for coronary artery disease in Turkey?

Istanbul hospitals such as Anadolu Medical Center and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental are top-rated for coronary artery disease treatment. These JCI-accredited facilities specialise in bypass surgery and robotic-assisted procedures. Turkey serves over 23,000 international heart surgery patients annually with technology like the da Vinci XI system.

  • Anadolu Medical Center: JCI-accredited facility affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital for complex cardiac care.
  • Hisar Hospital Intercontinental: Features JCI accreditation and a cardiologist who performed 4,000+ open-heart surgeries.
  • Memorial Healthcare Group: Includes JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli, Memorial Ataşehir and Memorial Bahçelievler.
  • Istanbul Florence Nightingale: Major tertiary hospital with 804 beds and 300,000 annual patients.
  • Liv Hospital Vadistanbul: Specialises in interventional cardiology and 3D-mapping-guided ablation procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many patients focus on large hospital brands. However, the best bypass outcomes in Istanbul often come from doctors with high-volume practice. Dr Ali Fedakar at Hisar Hospital has individually performed approximately 4,000 open-heart surgeries. Choose surgeons with 1,000+ primary cases rather than just clinic-wide accreditation for the best precision.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the responsiveness of dedicated care teams. They also appreciate receiving all pre-operative tests in a single day. Many note the personal attention from professors and the support from English-speaking coordinators.
