They helped me here in just one visit
My main concern was that the treatment would not yield real results. However, I had been struggling with my issue for many years, and they helped me here in just one visit. This is true. The entire process was organized very efficiently, and both the surgeon and the entire clinic staff demonstrated high professionalism. I am currently in the early stages of recovery, and there are already positive changes. When asked what could be improved, I couldn't think of anything because everything was perfect. I have no complaints about the clinic or the quality of medical services.

To be honest, if a friend asked me, I wouldn’t recommend this treatment. It’s been 15 days, and so far the results have been rather modest — my blood sugar levels have improved slightly, but that’s about it. The clinic itself deserves high praise; everything is very modern and clean. However, the work of the doctor and staff left a mediocre impression. When I asked questions, time was limited, and I didn’t manage to ask everything I wanted to; the doctor simply said, ‘If you like, come back tomorrow.’ The consultation lasted a mere 15 minutes. The transfer services were very poorly organised, with issues regarding punctuality, constant waiting and frequent changes of interpreters. Perhaps there will be improvements to the treatment in the future. Overall, I got the impression that the hospital’s primary concern is simply making money, and everything else is of secondary importance.

Before I went, I told them that I needed some kind of operation. At the end, after all the tests, they tell me that this operation is not suitable for you. It turns out I went in vain and spent the money. double expense. I'm disappointed

Expert Overview about Diabetes type 2 Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Can metabolic surgery in Turkey permanently resolve Type 2 diabetes?

Metabolic surgery in Turkey provides long-term remission for 50% to 80% of Type 2 diabetes patients. It is not a guaranteed permanent cure. Success depends on diabetes duration and remaining pancreatic function. Procedures like gastric bypass can normalise blood sugar within days.

  • Clinical outcome: Remission means normal blood sugar without meds, not a lifetime guarantee.
  • Surgery types: Options include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion procedures.
  • Expert surgeons: Dr Fatih Karaca participated in the first Turkish laparoscopic metabolic surgery.
  • Package inclusions: A$6,300 bundles often cover preoperative cardiac mapping, scans, and nutrition consultations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish metabolic surgery centres focus on volume and speed. Leading clinics like Estexper specifically market diabetes-focused procedures to Australian patients. High-volume specialists like Dr Mustafa Sahin have performed 20,000+ bariatric operations. They offer technical repetition rarely found in smaller regional hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that blood sugar often improves immediately. They still emphasise the need for lifelong dietary discipline and regular blood tests. Turkish clinics are praised for modern facilities and efficient transition teams. However, some visitors found consultations brief and transfers or interpreters occasionally unpunctual.

What are the potential health risks associated with diabetes surgery in Turkey?

Diabetes surgery in Turkey is generally safe in JCI-accredited hospitals. Potential risks include short-term complications like infection, bleeding, or leaks from surgical connections. Long-term concerns involve nutritional deficiencies and digestive issues. Preoperative screening using ECG and echocardiography helps manage risks for Australian patients.

  • Short-term risks: These include wound infections, bleeding, and blood clots after laparoscopic procedures.
  • Anastomotic leaks: Leaks from surgical connections are serious and require immediate medical attention.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: Malabsorption can lead to mineral shortages requiring lifelong supplements.
  • Digestive issues: Patients may experience nausea, acid reflux, or dumping syndrome post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish metabolic surgery packages often focus on preoperative cardiac safety. For example, Estexper Clinic includes ECG mapping and cardiologist consultations to screen for heart risks. This thorough screening checks that patients are fit for surgery. This reduces the chance of complications during the operation.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey note that results vary and medication may still be needed. They emphasise arranging back-up care with an Australian GP before travel. This helps manage post-operative glucose changes and nutritional follow-up.

Who is considered a suitable candidate for metabolic surgery in Turkey?

Metabolic surgery candidates in Turkey typically include adults with type 2 diabetes. They usually have a body mass index (BMI) over 35. For patients with poorly controlled blood sugar, specialists may consider a BMI of 30. Evidence of failed weight loss through diet or medication is also essential.

  • Body mass index: A BMI over 40 qualifies automatically; 30–35 requires uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Medical history: Candidates must show diabetes stays poorly managed despite standard medical therapy.
  • Surgical fitness: Patients undergo ECG, blood tests, and cardiology reviews for safe anaesthesia.
  • Obesity complications: Hypertension or sleep apnoea often reinforces a patient's eligibility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish metabolic centres often provide multidisciplinary teams that go beyond surgery. Specialists like Professor Suleyman Hilmi Ipekci at Hisar Hospital have completed endocrinology fellowships. This helps surgeries specifically target hormone regulation rather than just weight loss. Clinics such as Estexper Clinic offer packages around A$6,300. These include nutritionist consultations to help Australians manage post-op dietary transitions.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Turkey clinics require detailed records of previous blood sugar control. They also require physical tests. Many say that having a dedicated transition team makes navigating pre-surgery requirements much easier.

What specific procedures are available for Type 2 diabetes treatment in Turkey?

Turkish medical centres offer metabolic surgery, including transit bipartition and ileal interposition, to treat Type 2 diabetes. These procedures alter gastrointestinal anatomy to improve insulin sensitivity. Specialist clinics in Istanbul and Antalya provide all-inclusive packages. Patients often achieve significant blood sugar stabilisation and weight reduction.

  • Metabolic surgery: Procedures like transit bipartition stimulate hormones to reduce insulin resistance.
  • Specialised techniques: Ileal interposition and gastric bypass are used for complex cases.
  • Stem cell therapy: Professor Erdal Karaöz at Liv Hospital specialises in regenerative medicine.
  • Endocrinology review: Specialists like Professor Suleyman Hilmi Ipekci perform detailed hormonal mapping.
  • All-inclusive care: Packages at Estexper Clinic cover cardiology, nutrition, and cardiac mapping.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish metabolic surgery centres often include extensive pre-operative screening that exceeds standard bariatric checks. For example, Estexper Clinic bundles echocardiography and ECG mapping into their diabetes surgery packages. This helps confirm the heart can safely handle the metabolic shift. Such checks are vital for long-term Type 2 diabetes management.

Patient Consensus: Patients value how Turkish clinics combine medication adjustments with surgery options. They highlight the importance of confirming whether the plan covers both surgical intervention and long-term endocrinology follow-up.

What is the typical recovery timeline for patients undergoing diabetes surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically return to light activities within 1–3 weeks after laparoscopic diabetes surgery in Turkey. Most stay in hospital for 3–4 days to monitor blood sugar levels. Full lifestyle adjustment and dietary progression usually take 3–6 months for permanent stabilisation.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients remain for 3–4 days for postoperative monitoring.
  • Early mobility: Many patients begin walking within 24 hours to aid circulation.
  • Dietary transition: Patients follow a structured liquid-to-solid diet over 4 weeks.
  • Work resumption: Regular office work is usually possible within 3–5 weeks.
  • Sugar stabilisation: Normalisation of blood sugar levels often begins within days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish metabolic surgery centres often include extended follow-up care in their packages. This manages the critical 6-month adjustment window. For instance, Estexper Clinic packages include nutritionist consultations and cardiologist reviews. This integrated approach helps international patients transition safely to independent management at home.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that the first 3 days are physically demanding. They cite nausea and fatigue but say they quickly regain mobility. Many emphasise that real recovery involves adapting to strict dietary phases once back home.
