Tooth extraction in Thailand typically costs from AUD $35 / ฿A1,177 to AUD $144 / ฿A4,902. Prices depend on the extraction complexity, such as whether the tooth is erupted or impacted, and the chosen sedation level. In Australia, patients often pay around AUD $1,442 / ฿A49,023 for similar procedures. By travelling to dental hubs like Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai, Australians can save approximately 90%. Most clinics include a clinical examination and local anaesthetic within these rates.

The wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care
It is a clean hospital and the wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care. The dentist and dental personnel can speak fluent English which is important for most people like I. For wisdom teeth extraction the cost was 20000 baht for 4 teeth( including medication and nurse charge), but it all depends if the teeth has impacted. I would highly recommend the clinic.

What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it
What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it. My biggest fear was not understanding the treatment plan or feeling rushed, but that wasn’t the case at all. The dentist was very patient and took the time to explain each step to me in detail. It was reassuring. The overall organisation ran smoothly and the whole clinic team were professional and happy to answer my questions. Coordination via Bookimed simplified the whole process, which helped reduce the stress of having a medical appointment abroad. I left with clear information and a good overall impression.

I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism
Hello everyone, like many other people before an operation, I wasn't feeling very well. The staff at the clinic immediately reassured and accompanied me. Believe me or not, I didn't feel a thing. The dental surgeon fitted the 2 implants in 40 minutes, and I had no infections whatsoever. My Bookimed advisor (Péguy) was with me from the start and is still with me today. I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism. Sylvain B.

FAQ about Tooth Extraction in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

When should I contact a dentist after having a tooth extraction in Thailand?

Contact a dentist in Thailand immediately if severe pain worsens after 3 days. Also seek help if heavy bleeding continues after biting gauze. Prompt attention is needed for signs of infection like fever, pus, or a foul taste. See a dentist if facial swelling increases after 48 hours.

  • Worsening pain: New, throbbing pain after day 3 often indicates a dry socket.
  • Heavy bleeding: Seek care if blood pools rapidly after 1 hour of firm pressure.
  • Infection markers: Watch for fever, chills, or persistent discharge from the extraction site.
  • Breathing issues: Urgent medical care is vital for difficulty swallowing or breathing.
  • Visual checks: Send photos of your socket to the clinic for remote triage first.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai dental hubs like Bangkok and Chiang Mai host 152+ clinics. Many have JCI and ISO accreditations that Australians expect. While simple extractions start at $24, complicated surgical cases can reach $600. Patients should confirm an after-hours emergency contact before leaving the surgery. Follow-up access becomes difficult once travelling between Thai provinces or flying home.

Patient Consensus: Confirm normal healing with a quick check-in within 24–48 hours before flying out. Use bottled water for gentle rinsing to avoid introducing local bacteria to the open wound.

What are the common reasons a tooth extraction is required?

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure. It is usually required when severe decay, gum disease, or trauma makes saving a tooth impossible. In Thailand, specialists frequently perform extractions for impacted wisdom teeth, persistent infection (abscess), or to create space for orthodontic alignment.

  • Severe decay: Required when cavities destroy structural integrity beyond repair by crowns.
  • Gum disease: Bone loss from periodontal disease causes teeth to become dangerously loose.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth: Surgical removal prevents pain, infection, or damage to neighbouring healthy teeth.
  • Orthodontic preparation: Removal of healthy teeth resolves overcrowding before applying braces or aligners.
  • Failed dental work: Extraction may follow unsuccessful root canals or repeated restorative failures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand's high-volume dental centres often treat complex cases. These combine extraction with immediate implant placement. Specialists like Dr. Suthida Vanitchanon at Navamin 9 Hospital are board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery. They handle even difficult bone-impacted removals with surgical precision. This expertise is why clinics in Bangkok serve over 15,000 patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand appreciate receiving clear X-ray evidence and thorough explanations before any removal is performed. Many found that prompt treatment for painful fractures or recurring abscesses provided immediate relief. This also prevented more serious infections.

Are wisdom teeth extractions in Thailand more complex than standard extractions?

Wisdom teeth extraction in Thailand is either a simple or surgical procedure. This depends on the tooth position. Fully erupted teeth undergo standard extraction. Impacted teeth require surgical removal. This involves incisions and bone access by specialists at JCI-accredited clinics in Bangkok.

  • Surgical classification: Impacted or partially erupted teeth are treated as complex surgical cases.
  • Maxillofacial specialists: Experts like Dr Siwakorn Rattanakuntee specialise in complex jaw and facial surgeries.
  • Diagnostics: Clinics use panoramic X-rays or 3D scans to map nerve proximity safely.
  • Anaesthesia options: Patients can choose local anaesthetic, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia for comfort.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A standard extraction in Thailand starts from $24. Most Australian patients require surgical removal for wisdom teeth. This costs from $100 to $100. Clinics like Kitcha Dental have treated over 10,000 patients with surgical expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend confirming if the tooth is simple or surgical before arrival. Most suggest checking if quotes include X-rays, antibiotics, and dissolvable stitches for easier travel.

How long is the typical healing timeline following a tooth extraction in Thailand?

Healing starts with a blood clot forming in the first 24 hours. Peak swelling then occurs at 2 to 3 days. Visible gum tissue typically recovers within 1 to 2 weeks. Complete bone remodelling takes 3 to 6 months before dental implants are safely placed.

  • Flying window: Experts recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before flying to avoid cabin pressure issues.
  • Initial recovery: First 24 hours require strict rest to protect the blood clot and prevent dry socket.
  • Peak inflammation: Major swelling and jaw stiffness usually peak between the second and third days.
  • Soft tissue closure: Simple extractions see gum closure in 7 to 14 days. This often requires a check-up.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like SmileBox and Kitcha Dental specialise in synchronising extractions with long-term plans. Data shows specialists often use original Swiss Straumann materials for these cases. This helps the jawbone heal with the structural density needed for high-quality implants later.

Patient Consensus: First days involve managing swelling with cold packs and soft food. Most people feel ready for light sightseeing in Thailand after a week when gums look significantly better.

How should I prepare for a tooth extraction procedure in Thailand?

To prepare for a tooth extraction in Thailand, patients must coordinate their travel timeline. Allow at least 48 to 72 hours of recovery before flying. Leading Bangkok centres like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Bangkok International Dental Center hold JCI accreditation. This confirms they meet international safety standards for surgical and simple extractions.

  • Flight timing: Wait 3–7 days after surgical extractions before flying to avoid cabin pressure complications.
  • Pre-op diagnostics: Email recent panoramic X-rays to the clinic weeks before the appointment for planning.
  • Medical disclosure: Provide a list of medications, specifically blood thinners, which might need temporary adjustment.
  • Fasting rules: Fast for 8 hours if undergoing IV sedation or general anaesthesia for surgery.
  • Stock supplies: Purchase soft foods like yoghurt and hydration drinks before the procedure to aid recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai dental clinics like Bangkok Smile Dental specialise in quick turnaround plans for international patients. While simple extractions cost from $24, booking a specialist like Dr Suthida Vanitchanon at Navamin 9 Hospital ensures board-certified expertise for complex impacted teeth. This expertise is a significant value-add given the 83% savings compared to Australian prices.

Patient Consensus: Patients suggest confirming whether the extraction is simple or surgical as this radically changes aftercare needs. Many found that bringing written medication lists and dental history made the initial consultation in Thailand much smoother.

Can I drive after undergoing a tooth extraction in Thailand?

Driving after a tooth extraction in Thailand is safe only if the dentist used local anaesthesia. Avoid driving for 24 hours if you received IV sedation or general anaesthesia. Thai traffic conditions require full concentration and rapid reflexes.

  • Anaesthesia type: Local anaesthesia does not impair driving. Sedation requires a 24-hour wait.
  • Pain Management: Avoid driving if you take strong painkillers that cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • City traffic: Driving in Bangkok or Chiang Mai demands high mental energy and quick reactions.
  • Safety first: Numbness or sudden bleeding can distract you. This makes operating a vehicle risky.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows 152 clinics in Thailand serve 5,000+ patients annually. Many clinics specialise in rapid turnarounds. Leading centres like Kitcha Dental Clinic have 40+ years of experience. They often recommend ride-hailing apps like Grab for safety. This avoids the stress of navigating complex Thai traffic while recovering.

Patient Consensus: Arrange your return transport before the appointment. Avoid driving if you feel dazed, shaky, or have ongoing bleeding. Thailand offers reliable air-conditioned ride-share options and private drivers. These are safer than driving a scooter or car while numb.
