How Much Does Surgical extraction of tooth /root Cost in Thailand in AUD?

Surgical extraction of a tooth or root in Thailand typically costs from AUD $429 / ฿A14,570 to AUD $857 / ฿A29,139. Prices depend on the complexity of the extraction, such as impacted roots, and whether you choose a specialized dental hospital in Bangkok or a clinic in Chiang Mai. In Australia, similar procedures cost around AUD $2,000 / ฿A67,992 on average. Patients save approximately 64% by travelling to Thailand. This cost typically includes the surgical procedure and local anaesthetic.

  • Complexity of extraction: Simple surgical removals start lower, while cases requiring bone removal can increase costs by 50-70%.
  • Diagnostic imaging: Digital X-rays or 3D CT scans are usually charged separately from the base surgical fee.
  • Dental hubs: Bangkok and Phuket are primary hubs, while Chiang Mai clinics often offer more competitive regional rates.
  • Sedation options: Local anaesthetic is standard, but opting for IV sedation usually adds a fixed specialist fee.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Australian patients often find high value in clinics like Kitcha Dental Clinic in Chiang Mai. They serve over 10,000 patients annually and hold American Dental Association (ADA) accreditation. Choosing a clinic with such high volume often means surgeons have seen every possible complication. This experience ensures efficient treatment and predictable outcomes for complex root removals without the premium prices of large private hospitals.

What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it
What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it. My biggest fear was not understanding the treatment plan or feeling rushed, but that wasn’t the case at all. The dentist was very patient and took the time to explain each step to me in detail. It was reassuring. The overall organisation ran smoothly and the whole clinic team were professional and happy to answer my questions. Coordination via Bookimed simplified the whole process, which helped reduce the stress of having a medical appointment abroad. I left with clear information and a good overall impression.

I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism
Hello everyone, like many other people before an operation, I wasn't feeling very well. The staff at the clinic immediately reassured and accompanied me. Believe me or not, I didn't feel a thing. The dental surgeon fitted the 2 implants in 40 minutes, and I had no infections whatsoever. My Bookimed advisor (Péguy) was with me from the start and is still with me today. I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism. Sylvain B.

The wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care
It is a clean hospital and the wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care. The dentist and dental personnel can speak fluent English which is important for most people like I. For wisdom teeth extraction the cost was 20000 baht for 4 teeth( including medication and nurse charge), but it all depends if the teeth has impacted. I would highly recommend the clinic.

FAQ about Surgical extraction of tooth /root in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe to have a surgical extraction of a tooth or root performed in Thailand?

Surgical tooth or root extraction in Thailand is safe at accredited centres like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) or Kitcha Dental Clinic. These facilities use 3D CT imaging and follow JCI or ISO 9001 standards. Specialists often hold international qualifications from the USA, UK, or Germany.

  • Certified specialists: Maxillofacial surgeons like Dr Thanapon Suwanapong specialise in complex impacted tooth removal.
  • Effective diagnostics: Clinics use 3D CT scans for precise planning and avoiding nerve damage.
  • Accredited facilities: BIDC holds JCI accreditation and ISO 9001:2015 certification for high-quality care.
  • Sterilisation protocols: Leading clinics employ 3M Attest rapid monitoring to verify surgical tool sterility.
  • Australian support: Centres like SmileBox and Kitcha provide dedicated English-speaking staff for Australians.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Simple extractions are routine, but surgical root cases require hospital-grade setups. Bookimed data shows that clinics with high patient volumes have very experienced oral surgeons. Kitcha Dental Clinic serves 10,000+ patients annually. Choosing a centre with an in-house digital lab provides precise surgical guides for complex bone work.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand appreciate the clear written aftercare instructions and pre-surgery X-rays. Many recommend staying for 7–14 days to monitor for swelling or dry socket before flying home.

How long is the recovery period following a surgical extraction in Thailand, and is it safe to fly?

Recovery after surgical extraction in Thailand typically takes 7–10 days. Swelling and discomfort usually peak around day 3. Simple extractions require 3–5 days. Surgical cases involving impacted roots need 7–14 days before flying. This helps avoid risks like dry socket or pain from cabin pressure.

  • Flying timeframe: Wait 7–10 days for surgical cases for better blood clot stability.
  • Swelling peak: Facial swelling typically reaches its maximum between 48 and 72 hours.
  • Clinic stay: Plan 7–10 days in Bangkok or Phuket for follow-up and stitches.
  • Pressure risks: Cabin pressure changes can cause throbbing or bleeding in fresh surgical sites.
  • Soft tissue: Most patients resume light activity and soft foods within 3–5 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often overlook multi-specialist centres like Kitcha Dental Clinic or BIDC. These clinics house over 29–45 dentists. This includes maxillofacial surgeons who specialise in complex extractions. Choosing these high-volume centres ensures access to 3D CT scans. These scans help reduce surgical trauma and shorten the initial recovery period.

Patient Consensus: Many travellers found symptoms most intense during the first 3 days in Thailand. They advise scheduling surgery with a buffer period. This helps manage pain and swelling before the long flight back to Australia.

What are the primary clinical reasons for requiring a surgical tooth or root extraction while abroad in Thailand?

Primary clinical reasons for surgical tooth or root extractions in Thailand include impacted wisdom teeth. Other causes are retained root fragments and teeth fractured below the gumline. Acute pain from severe decay or failed root canals often prompts urgent surgery. This typically occurs at JCI-accredited facilities in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.

  • Impacted wisdom teeth: Surgical removal of molars partly or fully trapped in the jawbone.
  • Retained root fragments: Extracting leftover pieces from prior surgeries that cause pain or infection.
  • Unrestorable fractures: Removing teeth broken below the gumline that simple forceps cannot reach.
  • Complex root anatomy: Managing curved or brittle roots that may fracture during simple extractions.
  • Severe periodontal disease: Removing mobile teeth when gum disease has destroyed supporting bone.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) often use 3D CT imaging. They also use surgical guides for extractions. These technologies allow specialists to map the exact position of roots relative to nerves. This precision helps prevent complications and is standard at centres serving 20,000+ patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand often find that impacted wisdom teeth or broken segments require a specialist. This typically involves a maxillofacial surgeon. Clinicians frequently use 3D scans and might prescribe antibiotics before surgery to manage swelling or infections.

What is the clinical difference between a simple extraction and a surgical extraction for patients visiting Thailand?

Simple extraction involves removing a visible tooth using forceps. Surgical extraction addresses teeth hidden below the gumline or broken into pieces. This distinction determines whether a general dentist or a specialist surgeon performs the procedure.

  • Approach type: Simple extraction uses forceps for accessible teeth. Surgical cases require gum incisions and bone removal.
  • Clinical complexity: Surgical methods manage impacted wisdom teeth, fractured roots, or severe decay below the gumline.
  • Surgical specialists: Complex cases are handled by oral and maxillofacial surgeons at clinics like Kitcha Dental Clinic.
  • Recovery period: Simple extractions typically heal within 7 days. Surgical sites require 14–21 days for full recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai dental groups often house over 45 specialists. Patients with unexpected fractures during simple extractions are instantly transferred to in-house oral surgeons. This transition helps international patients avoid multiple appointments or delayed travel plans.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand recommend confirming if a tooth is graspable before flying. This helps them prepare for the longer recovery surgical cases require. Many experienced more swelling than expected and suggest booking local follow-up care in advance.

When is a surgical extraction considered necessary compared to a simple tooth extraction?

Surgical extraction is necessary when a tooth is not visible above the gum line. It is also used if a tooth cannot be removed in one piece. This procedure is required for impacted wisdom teeth or teeth broken below the gum line. It also suits complex root structures that standard forceps cannot grip safely.

  • Impacted teeth: Required when teeth stay trapped below gums, often involving bone removal.
  • Structural damage: Necessary for teeth fractured at the root or severely decayed.
  • Complex roots: Used for curved or fragile roots that risk breaking during extraction.
  • Imaging: Specialists in Thailand use 3D CT scans to plan safe surgical paths.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) hold JCI accreditation. This confirms they meet theatre standards for extractions. While a simple pull costs from $24, a surgical procedure reflects the complex work and specialist expertise required.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand note that X-rays often reveal hidden fractures or nerve proximity. These issues require a surgical approach rather than a simple pull. They recommend confirming if the procedure involves gum incisions to prepare for the longer recovery time.
