"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

Our Removal of liver cancer Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Removal of liver cancer, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Liver resection

Liver resection, also known as hepatectomy, involves surgically removing a portion of the liver to treat liver tumors or other liver-related conditions.

Pros: This procedure allows for precise removal of liver tumors with a high success rate in eligible patients. It can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, reducing recovery time by 50% compared to open surgery.
Cons: There is a risk of liver failure if too much liver tissue is removed. The procedure may not be suitable for patients with poor liver function or extensive liver disease.
Effectiveness: Success rate of up to 90% for localized liver tumors.
Duration: 3-5 hours
Recovery: 4-6 weeks
Best for: Patients with localized liver tumors, metastatic liver disease, or liver lesions not responding to other therapies.

FAQ about Removal of liver cancer in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What factors determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for liver surgery?

Suitability for liver surgery in Thailand depends on liver function, tumour size, and general physical fitness. Specialists evaluate Child-Pugh scores and future liver remnant volume to ensure the remaining liver can regenerate. Leading centres like Bumrungrad International Hospital use robotic surgery and digital imaging to assess surgical margins.

  • Liver function: Specialists use Child-Pugh scores to check if the liver can regenerate.
  • Tumour location: Surgeons ensure the tumour sits away from major veins and biliary trees.
  • Remnant volume: Healthy patients usually need at least 30% of their liver tissue remaining.
  • Physical fitness: Patients must have clear heart and lung function to tolerate general anaesthesia.
  • Disease spread: Surgery is typically reserved for cancer that has not spread beyond the liver.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals like Bumrungrad International serve over 1,000,000 patients annually and often use AI for assessment. This high volume means surgeons have experience with complex cases that might be deemed borderline elsewhere. International patients benefit from Global Healthcare Accreditation, which ensures the hospital's logistics match Australian expectations for preoperative testing.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that overall liver health and scarring are just as important as tumour size. Real-world experience shows that being physically fit helps people recover faster after major surgery in Thailand.

What are the primary surgical options for removing liver cancer in Thailand?

Surgical removal of liver cancer in Thailand primarily involves partial hepatectomy, liver transplantation, or thermal ablation. Specialist centres in Bangkok use robotic-assisted systems to perform precise resections. These procedures aim to remove tumours while preserving enough healthy tissue for the liver to regenerate and function.

  • Partial hepatectomy: Surgeons remove the tumour and surrounding healthy tissue to ensure clear margins.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: Systems like da Vinci Xi allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery.
  • Liver transplantation: This replaces the diseased organ and is reserved for early-stage cancer with cirrhosis.
  • Thermal ablation: Microwaves or radiofrequency waves destroy small tumours without requiring major open incisions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bumrungrad International Hospital treats over 1,000,000 patients annually and holds Global Healthcare Accreditation. Their high volume means surgical teams handle complex resections regularly. This experience often leads to more refined post-operative care compared to smaller, less specialised facilities.

Patient Consensus: Surgical success in Thailand depends on tumour size, location, and liver health. Patients recommend bringing all staging scans and liver function tests for review by multidisciplinary specialist teams.

Why do international patients choose Thailand for liver cancer removal?

International patients choose Thailand for liver cancer removal due to its combination of JCI-accredited facilities, rapid surgical scheduling, and advanced technology like robotic systems. Elite centres in Bangkok provide immediate access to hepatobiliary specialists, allowing patients to bypass the long waiting lists often found in the Australian public system.

  • Surgical expertise: Leading centres like Bumrungrad International Hospital serve over 1,000,000 patients annually with 1,300+ doctors.
  • Advanced technology: Specialists use robotic-assisted surgery and Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) for precise tumour targeting.
  • Accredited facilities: Many major hospitals hold JCI and ISO certifications, reflecting rigorous international safety standards.
  • Cost efficiency: Liver cancer removal costs from $20,000 to $40,000, saving patients up to 87%.
  • Immediate care: Patients often complete diagnostics and undergo surgery within days of arriving in Thailand.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek surgery for cost savings, the real advantage in Thailand is the volume-driven expertise. Hospitals like Bumrungrad see 50% international patient loads, meaning their oncology teams are highly specialised in managing complex cases and logistics for overseas patients. This experience translates to smoother coordination and higher comfort levels during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the rapid access to specialist opinions and the ability to secure a concrete treatment plan quickly. The hotel-like hospital suites make the recovery experience more comfortable for families while the English-speaking coordinators help reduce the stress of navigating treatment abroad.

Which are the top JCI-accredited hospitals for liver oncology in Thailand?

Bumrungrad International Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Pattaya are leading JCI-accredited facilities for liver oncology in Thailand. These tertiary centres provide multi-disciplinary care through dedicated digestive disease and hepato-pancreato-biliary clinics. They use advanced robotics and interventional radiology to treat complex liver malignancies for international patients.

  • Bumrungrad International: Serves 1,000,000+ patients annually and holds Global Healthcare Accreditation for international standards.
  • Clinical excellence: Features the Horizon Regional Cancer Centre for personalised oncology and robotic-assisted liver resections.
  • Bangkok Hospital Pattaya: Award-winning JCI-accredited hub on the East Coast serving 400,000+ patients every year.
  • Comprehensive services: Provides on-site medical translation and dedicated wings for visa and travel logistics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While JCI accreditation is a standard benchmark, the highest success rates often correlate with patient volume. Bumrungrad serves over 1,000,000 patients annually and has 1,300 doctors. This high frequency ensures surgical teams stay sharp on complex liver resections and unique pathology cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand recommend requesting a liver cancer pathway review before flying. They highlight the efficient English-speaking administration and the speed of getting specialist appointments. Sending pathology slides ahead ensures the surgical plan is ready before you arrive.
