How Much Does Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey typically costs from AUD $5,730 to AUD $11,459. The final price depends on the kidney stone size, the specific surgical technique used, and the clinic category in cities like Istanbul, Ankara, or Antalya. Patients from Australia save approximately 45% compared to the average Australian cost of AUD $15,756. Packages usually include the surgical procedure, general anaesthesia, preoperative tests, several nights of hospital and hotel stays, and airport-to-clinic transfers.

  • Hospital tier: Prices in premium Istanbul facilities can be 15–20% higher than in regional hubs like Ankara.
  • Surgical complexity: Cases involving multiple or Staghorn stones often increase costs due to longer theatre time.
  • Technology: The use of advanced laser equipment or robotic assistance typically adds a 20–30% premium.
  • Accreditation: Hospitals with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation often charge more for meeting global safety standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialist with high procedural volumes offers the best value for complex stone cases. For example, Dr. Mustafa Sarioglu has performed over 500 successful PCNL procedures. While premium Istanbul centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital charge more, clinics like Lokman Hekim Etlik Hospital in Ankara offer all-inclusive packages for approximately A$5,300. These comprehensive deals often cover six days of total accommodation and full board.

I’m glad I chose this team for my care and would absolutely do so again
My biggest worry was the complexity of the procedure itself, especially since it turned out I needed a Vasoepididymostomy. However, the surgeon was very clear and reassuring from the first consultation. That put me at ease. The clinic staff were consistently supportive, and the entire process felt organized and professional. Recovery is a journey, and while there's still some healing to do, I feel like I was in very capable hands. Everything went smoothly. I’m glad I chose this team for my care and would absolutely do so again.

The result is already better than expected
What worried me most was how the final length would turn out, but the result is already better than expected. The team was faultless. My incision for the 3-piece Rigicon implant is healing cleanly, though the most difficult part of recovery has been just trying to sit comfortably. The clinic facility itself is why I gave a lower rating; it’s functional but feels dated. This did not detract from the quality of the medical attention, however. Based on the care from the staff and the surgeon, I would direct others here.
The whole experience overall was great. Dr Bugra Cetin made himself available throughout my time in Istanbul, when he wasn't in surgery, that made my trip easy. The staff at Bookimed addressed all my concerns day and night, with taxi, clinic and still with my recovery while back home. I got with my local Urologist for them to have a look at my surgical area and they were happy with the results so far and said everything looks perfect! Thanks Dr. Cetin and Team!
None, for Bookimed. Anytime I did have any issue with hotel and taxi service, the staff was spot on.

I won’t talk about the way this clinic conducts business, namely that the price starts to rise when you are already there and your passport is with the registrar, all this is nothing, if there was a result, but the result is this - Urology of this institution is completely bottom, here in the bookcomed they praised that you will have a professor, and so, a professor who, as it turned out, specializes in child circumcisions, spent at most three minutes on me when providing tests and descriptions of the disease, and two on the results and treatment prescriptions, well, okay, I think, the professor, he treats in a second, but no, I was treated, the result is zero, just zero. And you understand this: time, money and most importantly health, there are still a lot of moments, but you can close your eyes to all this, if you were cured, if you at least tried to think about it
How can I like something? What a funny questionnaire? I was not cured, what I liked was tea, it would have been a very good teahouse

After I got the address of the doctor needed, I managed to see him, but everyone was surprised by my visit. The doctor was not aware that I was going to meet him, the staff were all surprised. They were not aware of bookmed at all neither did they know the focal person who linked me with the hospital. The doctor told me he would send a preliminary report on the patient. I never got the report. Please let me know what happened? Is it scam or something?

FAQ about Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the common clinical risks of undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey?

Common clinical risks of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey include haemorrhage, infection, and fever. These risks occur in roughly 10.8% of cases globally. Major complications affect 2% to 17.5% of patients. Specialists at JCI-accredited Turkish facilities use minimally invasive tract dilatation to manage these risks.

  • Haemorrhage risk: This is the most common serious complication. It sometimes requires blood transfusion during or after surgery.
  • Infection prevention: Sepsis or site infections are managed with pre-operative screenings and targeted antibiotics.
  • Organ safety: Potential injury to the kidney, ureter, or bladder occurs in rare instances.
  • Thoracic complications: Risks like pneumothorax affect about 1.5% of patients during renal access.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume surgeons in Turkey have performed 1,000+ kidney stone surgeries. Professor Ozkan Onuk at Medical Park Bahcelievler is one such specialist. Data shows that choosing surgeons with 500+ procedures lowers the risk of residual stone burden. This experience reduces the need for secondary "second-look" procedures or stenting.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest confirming on-site blood bank and ICU availability before surgery. They recommend asking for post-operative imaging plans to confirm no stones remain.

How can I verify the qualifications of a urologist specialising in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey?

Verify a Turkish urologist’s qualifications by checking for membership in the Turkish Urological Association. Look for Fellowship of the European Board of Urology (FEBU). The specialist should have high PCNL volumes, ideally 500+ cases. They should operate in JCI-accredited facilities with an International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate.

  • Professional memberships: Verify registration with the Turkish Urological Association and the European Association of Urology.
  • Clinical experience: Look for surgeons like Dr Mustafa Sarioglu who has performed 900+ procedures.
  • Hospital accreditation: Prioritise JCI-accredited centres such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental or Medipol Mega University Hospital.
  • Academic standing: High-tier specialists like Assoc. Prof. Cevper Ersoz hold robotic and endourology certifications.
  • International training: Check for specialists with observerships at major institutions like the University of Michigan.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient data shows that Turkish professors often have higher caseloads than many Western peers. Dr Ozkan Onuk at Medical Park Bahcelievler has performed over 1,000 kidney stone surgeries. This volume is a primary indicator of safety and surgical precision.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest requesting the surgeon’s medical licence number. They also ask for stone-free rates for complex cases. They recommend confirming the surgeon performs the full procedure personally rather than delegating tasks.

What is the success rate of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for kidney stone removal in Turkey?

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Turkey achieves stone-free success rates between 75% and 98%. These results match international standards for large kidney stones. Specialised methods like Mini-PCNL reach 90%–96% success. Complex staghorn calculi maintain a 50%–62.6% clearance rate per surgical session in high-volume Ankara and Istanbul centres.

  • Expert volume: Leading surgeons like Dr Ozkan Onuk at Medical Park Bahcelievler have performed over 1,000 kidney stone surgeries.
  • Clinical experience: Specialist Mustafa Sarioglu at Lokman Hekim Etlik Hospital has completed 900+ procedures.
  • Accredited facilities: Major hubs like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Medipol Mega University Hospital hold JCI accreditation.
  • Clinical techniques: Clinics offer Mini-PCNL, laser stone breaking (RIRS), and Da Vinci robotic systems for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in Turkey is driven by sheer volume. Medipol Mega University Hospital serves 1,000,000 patients annually. This allows urologists to specialise deeply in specific stone types. While packages range from $4,000 to $8,000, the highest success rates occur in centres where surgeons focus exclusively on endourology.

Patient Consensus: PCNL is highly effective for large stones. Patients note that achieving stone-free status in Turkey sometimes requires secondary laser procedures or follow-up imaging. Most patients appreciate the structured pre-op planning and 3-day hospital supervision for a safe recovery.

What does the percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure involve?

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive surgery to remove large kidney stones. Surgeons make a small incision in the flank to create a direct tract. They fragment stones with lasers and extract them under general anaesthesia. JCI-accredited Turkish hospitals commonly perform this procedure.

  • Surgical access: Surgeons make a 1 cm incision to create a working channel.
  • Stone fragmentation: Specialists use laser or pneumatic devices to break large stones.
  • Visual guidance: Nephroscopes provide clear internal views for precise stone fragment removal.
  • Post-op drainage: Temporary stents or nephrostomy tubes assist kidney healing and urine flow.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish urologists often specialise in "Mini-PCNL". This uses smaller instruments to reduce tissue trauma. Surgeons such as Dr Ozkan Onuk have performed 1,200+ procedures. High surgical volume in major Istanbul centres often leads to lower complication rates.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) recovery?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 7 to 10 days for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). This timeframe allows for the 3-day hospital stay. It also covers post-operative monitoring before a long-haul flight to Australia. Surgeons confirm the nephrostomy tube is safely removed before travel.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 3 days in clinical care for monitoring and pain management.
  • Clinical observation: Budget 3 to 7 additional days in a hotel for recovery.
  • Tube removal: Surgeries often require drain removal 48–72 hours after the procedure.
  • Fit-to-fly check: Surgeons perform follow-up imaging and blood tests before granting travel clearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Turkish clinics bundle 3 days of hospitalisation with 3 days of hotel recovery. High-volume surgeons like Dr Ozkan Onuk at Medical Park Bahcelievler have performed 1,000+ kidney stone surgeries. Their experience often leads to efficient recovery protocols for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest staying 10–14 days to provide a safer buffer for long flights. They recommend confirming if stent removal occurs before discharge or needs a separate follow-up appointment.

How long does a percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure take to perform?

A percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure in Turkey typically takes 1 to 4 hours in theatre. The exact duration depends on the stone size, hardness, and location. Surgeons use general anaesthesia to access the kidney through a small 1-centimetre incision.

  • Surgical time: Most cases conclude within 1 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia.
  • Clinical stay: Patients typically remain in a Turkish hospital for 3 days for observation.
  • Stone complexity: Multiple kidney stones or larger fragments can extend the time in theatre.
  • Expert efficiency: Surgeons like Dr Ozkan Onuk have performed over 1,000 kidney stone surgeries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the surgery takes a few hours, the most efficient outcomes are found in Ankara and Istanbul. Clinics such as Lokman Hekim Etlik Hospital bundle the procedure with preoperative tests and 3 days of hospitalisation. This structure helps all diagnostic steps occur quickly before the 1–4 hour surgery begins.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the 2–4 hour theatre time manageable because they are under general anaesthesia. Most people in Turkey appreciate that hospital packages cover preoperative checks and recovery observation in one stay.
