I am now trying to go on a medical trip again. The new system sucks. When you enter your phone number you have to receive a verification code to do a request. I didn't receive any code. I talked to the operator. They stringed me allong for almost a week, promising that the medical coordinator would contact me. Nothing happened. I am sick and they are truly not helpfull at all. Terribly !!@

Based on my experience, I'd give this clinic a 10 for a recommendation
If you're considering this procedure, I found the process here to be very straightforward. The surgeon used bipolar cautery for the tubal ligation, leaving me with just three small holes that are all healing cleanly. It was a relief. The initial abdominal bloating went away completely, which was my main physical discomfort. My biggest recovery challenge has honestly been the fatigue that lingers, so be prepared to take it easy for a bit longer than you might think. The surgeon and staff were competent and professional. Based on my experience, I'd give this clinic a 10 for a recommendation.
The coordinator was very helpful, staff were knowledgeable and attentive, care was to a high standard.

I’d give the hospital 5 points
I’ll deduct one point because of the transfer. I was supposed to be at the hospital at 6.00. We’d agreed that they’d pick me up at 5.40. I waited until 5.55, but they didn’t come to pick me up, even though I’d texted and phoned them. They turned up just as I’d already walked there myself. Overall, though, I coped very well with the anaesthetic and haven’t felt any pain at all. I’d give the hospital 5 points.

FAQ about Parotidectomy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main risks associated with a parotidectomy in Turkey, and how are they managed?

Parotidectomy in Turkey involves risks including facial nerve injury, salivary leaks, Frey’s syndrome, and haematomas. Accredited Turkish hospitals manage these through intraoperative facial nerve monitoring and surgical suction drains. They also use physical barriers like muscle flaps to protect nerve endings.

  • Nerve monitoring: Surgeons use real-time acoustic feedback to reduce facial nerve injury rates.
  • Salivary management: Medical teams use surgical suction drains for 24–48 hours to prevent fluid pooling.
  • Frey’s syndrome: Specialists place physical barriers between skin and nerves to stop gustatory sweating.
  • Haematoma protocol: Turkish guidelines require stopping blood thinners and provide 48-hour close hospital monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center in Istanbul is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital and holds JCI accreditation. This ensures patients receive care that meets strict American safety standards for complex head and neck surgeries. Their packages include hospitalisation after surgery to monitor for urgent risks like haematomas.

Patient Consensus: Patients suggest confirming that surgeons use nerve monitoring. They also recommend asking for clear plans regarding drain management. Clear instructions on when to seek urgent care for swelling or redness help ensure a safe recovery in Turkey.

Will a parotidectomy performed in Turkey cause permanent xerostomia (dry mouth) or significant scarring?

A standard parotidectomy in Turkey is highly unlikely to cause permanent dry mouth. Surgeons typically preserve other salivary glands. These naturally compensate for the removed parotid tissue. Techniques like modified facelift incisions make scars inconspicuous. These scars fade into natural facial creases over twelve months.

  • Salivary compensation: Remaining submandibular and sublingual glands maintain oral moisture levels.
  • Nerve monitoring: Specialists like Dr Mehmet Emre Ustundag use monitors to protect sensitive facial nerves.
  • Technique variety: Options include superficial parotidectomy starting at $3,800 to preserve healthy tissue.
  • Incision placement: Facelift incisions hide scars behind the earlobe or within the hairline.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often worry about scarring. However, a major benefit in Turkey is the use of SMAS flap reconstruction. At centres like Anadolu Medical Center, surgeons use this technique to prevent cheek indentation. Choosing a Professor of Otorhinolaryngology helps ensure this reconstruction happens during the primary surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that neck scars are initially visible. They later fade into thin lines that are barely noticeable. Most experienced gradual improvement over several months. They found that dry mouth was not a long-term issue.

What is the typical recovery timeline following a parotidectomy in Turkey once I return home?

Most patients safely return to daily activities in Australia 2 to 4 weeks after a parotidectomy in Turkey. Initial healing allows for travel 5 to 7 days post-surgery. However, nerve regeneration and tissue softening continue for 3 to 12 months.

  • Work clearance: Plan for 2 weeks off work. Physical roles require 4 weeks.
  • Diet adjustment: Stick to soft foods for 2 weeks to prevent salivary fistula.
  • Physical restrictions: Avoid lifting over 4 kilograms for at least 14 days.
  • Scar maturation: Incision hardness peaks at Week 3 before softening over several months.
  • Nerve recovery: Temporary earlobe numbness or facial weakness usually resolves within 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Australian patients often choose JCI-accredited centres like Anadolu Medical Center. This centre is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital. Packages include airport transfers and hospitalisation. This keeps patients under specialist care until the drain is removed and they can fly.

Patient Consensus: Drain removal usually marks the turning point where pain and stiffness fade. Patients suggest eating small, soft meals in Turkey before flying home to manage jaw tightness.

How long should I organise to stay in Turkey for my parotidectomy procedure?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 10 to 14 days for a parotidectomy. This duration allows for surgery, a one-night hospital stay, and essential follow-up care. Surgeons generally remove sutures and drainage tubes approximately seven days after the procedure.

  • Hospitalisation period: Most cases require overnight monitoring to check that wound drainage is managed correctly.
  • Suture removal: Surgeons typically remove stitches around seven days after the operation.
  • Air travel: Doctors recommend waiting at least 14 days before flying back to Australia.
  • Monitoring window: Extra days allow specialists to manage swelling or fluid accumulation effectively.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center in Istanbul maintains a direct affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital. This allows surgical protocols for delicate head and neck procedures to match top international standards. Australian patients benefit from this oversight during their two-week recovery window.

Patient Consensus: Plan the trip around the drain removal window to avoid travel delays. Patients should confirm that their Turkey clinic provides a written fit-to-fly note for the return journey.
