The surgeon and staff were fantastic
The surgeon and staff were fantastic. I'm in the early phase of healing now; while I’m still slightly tired and my mobility is a bit reduced, I can feel myself getting stronger daily. It’s a steady process. Looking back, my only personal regret is that I wish I knew more Turkish to connect with people directly. That said, the translation provided was great and everything was communicated clearly. The whole process was handled with care.
Dorian was excellent. All the staff were great and made the experience so much more pleasant. Dr Akdimar is the very best physician I have ever seen. He was patient and caring. He helped me deal with a complicated and stressful process. I would recommend both Dr Akdimar and Memorial to my friends and family.
I really ant imagine better are and service.

FAQ about HIFU for prostate cancer treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main benefits of choosing HIFU over radical surgery for prostate cancer treatment in Turkey?

HIFU in Turkey offers a non-invasive alternative to radical surgery for localised prostate cancer. Patients benefit from lower risks of erectile dysfunction and urinary leakage. The procedure uses focused ultrasound energy instead of incisions. It typically requires only a 1-day hospital stay. Patients return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks.

  • Non-invasive technique: Delivers ultrasound energy via a probe without abdominal incisions or blood loss.
  • Preserves continence: Avoids damage to the urinary sphincter to maintain natural bladder control.
  • Protects sexual function: Targets specific lesions to spare delicate nerves responsible for erections.
  • Rapid recovery: Most patients return to light daily life within 7–14 days after treatment.
  • Repeatable treatment: Does not rule out future surgery or radiation if cancer later returns.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic HIFU starts from $7,000, all-inclusive packages around A$17,900 often provide better value. These bundles, like those at Men's Health Clinics, include 4-star accommodation and VIP transfers. This removes the stress of navigating Istanbul after a procedure involving a temporary catheter.

Patient Consensus: Treatment in Turkey feels easier than a biopsy and is relatively painless. Men appreciate regaining sexual function quickly and avoiding the leakage issues common with radical surgery.

Who is an ideal candidate for HIFU treatment for prostate cancer in Turkey?

Ideal candidates for HIFU in Turkey are men with localised, low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer, typically Stage T1 or T2. This non-invasive treatment suits those with a Gleason score of 3+4. It requires the tumour to be confined to the prostate gland and clearly visible on multiparametric MRI or fusion biopsy.

  • Cancer stage: Suitable for localised T1-T2 stages where cancer remains strictly within the gland.
  • Gleason score: Most effective for low- to medium-risk profiles, specifically Gleason 3+4 or Grade Group 2.
  • Tumour location: Best for unilateral disease where a single, pea-sized focus is accurately mapped.
  • Prostate volume: Surgeons prefer a prostate size under 40 cc for optimal focal energy targeting.
  • Function preservation: Ideal for patients who want to avoid erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres like Men's Health Clinics and Memorial Bahçelievler often bundle HIFU with 3 Tesla MRI diagnostics. Data shows that candidates with an anterior-posterior prostate depth under 3.5 cm achieve better targeting precision. This specific anatomical detail is often the deciding factor between focal therapy and whole-gland treatment.

Patient Consensus: Men choosing Turkey appreciate the one-day hospital stay and significantly lower downtime compared to surgery. The focus is on preserving quality of life while accepting the need for diligent PSA monitoring and follow-up biopsies.

Why do patients choose Turkey for HIFU procedures for prostate cancer?

Patients choose Turkey for prostate HIFU to access non-invasive focal therapy that preserves urinary and sexual function. High-volume JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul provide immediate scheduling and expert urologists. They also use imaging such as 3 Tesla MRI. These services often come at a significant saving compared to private Australian healthcare costs.

  • Technological edge: Centres like Memorial Bahçelievler use Elekta Versa HD and robotic systems for precise targeting.
  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons such as Dr Tuncay Tas hold international fellowships in urological oncology and laparoscopy.
  • Minimal downtime: Most procedures require only a 1-day hospital stay and a 1-week recovery period.
  • All-inclusive care: Packages often bundle preoperative tests, 4-star hotel stays, and VIP airport-to-clinic transfers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows a distinct value gap between hospital groups. Major networks like Memorial charge approximately A$21,600 for the procedure. However, specialised centres like Men's Health Clinics offer all-inclusive packages for A$17,900. These lower-priced bundles often include 3 nights in a hotel and full transfers. These are typically extra costs at larger general hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients value HIFU as a painless middle path. It avoids the life-altering side effects of radical surgery. They appreciate that the procedure in Turkey is repeatable. It also allows for future treatment options if cancer returns.

How long is the recovery process after a HIFU procedure for prostate cancer in Turkey?

Recovery after HIFU for prostate cancer in Turkey is swift. Most patients leave the hospital within 24 hours. This non-invasive ultrasound ablation involves no incisions. Initial recovery takes 1 to 2 weeks. However, full urinary and sexual function stabilisation typically needs 3 months of gradual improvement.

  • Hospital stay: Most patients are discharged within 1 day at JCI-accredited clinics like Memorial Bahçelievler.
  • Catheter duration: A urinary catheter remains in place for 3 to 14 days to manage swelling.
  • Return to activity: Gentle daily walks are encouraged within 1 week after the catheter is removed.
  • Monitoring schedule: Regular PSA blood tests begin 3 months post-treatment to track successful tissue ablation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres like Men's Health Clinics offer HIFU packages that include 24-hour nursing and 3 nights in a hotel. This extended support is vital. Patient data shows the 72 hours after catheter removal are the most challenging for managing urinary urgency.

Patient Consensus: Patients should expect to stay in Turkey for 1 to 2 weeks for follow-up care. Bringing leakage management supplies helps during the first month. Most men feel well after 8 days. Dribbling and urgency are common but usually temporary during the healing phase.
