How Much Does Carotid endarterectomy Cost in Turkey in AUD?

Carotid endarterectomy in Turkey typically costs from AUD $6,924 to AUD $11,078. The final price depends on the clinic tier, the surgeon's expertise, and necessary intensive care monitoring. Patients save around 63% by travelling to Turkey from Australia, where this procedure costs AUD $24,233 on average. These costs usually cover pre-operative imaging, anaesthetic, surgical fees, and hospital stay.

  • Robotic-assisted surgery: typically adds a 25–30% premium over traditional open surgical approaches.
  • Hospital location: Packages in Istanbul often run 15–20% higher than in smaller regional cities.
  • Case complexity: High-risk cases requiring extended intensive care monitoring will increase the total investment.
  • Clinic reputation: Premium centres with international affiliations often price their services at the higher end.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing JCI-accredited hubs like Memorial Şişli Hospital or Anadolu Medical Center provides high-level security. Anadolu is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital, offering American-standard protocols at Turkish prices. Some clinics, like Kolan Hospital Group, manage very high patient volumes, which helps maintain efficiency and competitive pricing. For Australians, these Istanbul-based centres provide a reliable alternative to long public waitlists.

I can only confirm what I felt on the ground: 'everything was organized and quick
What impressed me the most was the clarity and coordination of the entire process, from the initial consultation to the procedure itself. I spent a considerable amount of time meticulously researching varicose vein treatment options, so both the surgeon’s qualifications and the overall organization were important to me. Everything went smoothly. I can only confirm what I felt on the ground: "everything was organized and quick." The doctor is a professional, "explained and discussed" everything as clearly as possible, answered all my meticulous questions, which gave me confidence. I am currently in the early stages of recovery and am following all the recommendations. I haven't noted any areas for improvement. The staff is attentive, and the clinic fully matches its description.
Everything was organized and prompt. The doctor is a professional, explained and discussed everything.

I wish to express my deep appreciation for the wonderful care my mother received at Hospital. Only 15 days after my laser vein treatment, the veins on both of my legs are completely gone
The most surprising thing is that only 15 days after my laser vein treatment, the veins on both of my legs are completely gone. I wasn't expecting such a clear result this early in recovery. It feels great. From the surgeon to the administrative staff, every person I interacted with at the clinic was professional and genuinely kind, which made the entire process feel very secure. The care I received was excellent and the support provided during this initial healing period has been very reassuring. I'm grateful for the positive outcome and the good service.

To be honest, I am not very satisfied with their work, because after the procedure of sclerotherapy appeared on the arm a large bruise, it hurt and did not pass for a long time for two weeks or more. Also after the procedure in the vein that I was injected with it as it was such and remained, the procedure I consider useless if partially gone, but remained most of the visible.

FAQ about Carotid endarterectomy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of carotid endarterectomy in Turkey?

Carotid endarterectomy in Turkey restores blood flow with technical success rates of 90% to 98%. Specialist vascular departments in Istanbul and Ankara report perioperative stroke and death rates under 3%. These rates are for asymptomatic patients. These figures align with strict international safety benchmarks for stroke prevention.

  • Clinical success: Restoration of optimal blood flow typically ranges from 90% to 98%.
  • Safety benchmarks: Symptomatic patients see periprocedural stroke or death rates under 6%.
  • Neurological safety: Specialised cohorts often report major neurological deficit rates below 2%.
  • Hospital recovery: Most patients stay in theatre-linked wards for 1 to 3 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in vascular surgery correlates heavily with volume. Leading Turkish hospitals like Memorial Bahcelievler serve 250,000+ patients annually. Choosing high-volume centres means the theatre team handles these delicate artery clearances daily. This experience helps keep complication rates within global safety limits.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe feeling well-monitored during the short hospital stay. They appreciate the clear communication about recovery timelines. Most return home feeling more secure about their stroke risk.

What are the main alternatives to a surgical carotid endarterectomy available in Turkey?

Turkish cardiovascular centres offer carotid artery stenting and transcarotid artery revascularisation as minimally invasive alternatives to surgical endarterectomy. These procedures unblock carotid arteries using stents and catheters. They often bypass the need for major neck incisions in JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Bahçelievler.

  • Carotid artery stenting: Mesh tubes placed via the femoral artery to widen narrowed vessels.
  • Transcarotid artery revascularisation: Hybrid approach using a small neck puncture and temporary flow reversal.
  • Medical management: Intensive drug therapy for patients with mild or asymptomatic arterial stenosis.
  • Embolic protection: Filters catch plaque debris during stenting to prevent strokes during treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins Hospital, provides a bridge between surgical and medical options. While endarterectomy costs from $5,000, their interventional team specialises in stenting for high-risk patients. These patients cannot tolerate traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients travelling to Turkey for carotid care appreciate clinics that offer both femoral and transcarotid stenting options. Most find that initial medical therapy is thoroughly explored before any invasive intervention is recommended.

What is typically included in Turkish medical tourism packages for carotid endarterectomy?

Turkish carotid endarterectomy packages include the surgical procedure. They also include hospital stays with intensive care monitoring and logistical support. These bundles typically cover pre-operative imaging, such as CT angiography, in JCI-accredited facilities. Patients often receive VIP transfers and dedicated interpreters. They help manage the recovery process in Istanbul.

  • Clinical diagnostics: Includes blood panels, carotid ultrasounds, and vital vascular imaging for surgery.
  • Surgical fees: Covers the vascular surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre use, and all medical consumables.
  • Hospital stay: Typically provides 2–4 nights in hospital, including necessary intensive care unit monitoring.
  • Logistical support: Private airport transfers and professional interpreters facilitate travel between hotels and clinics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Vascular packages in Turkey often provide higher value. This is because they include intensive care unit (ICU) monitoring as standard. Some regions charge extra for ICU stays. In contrast, clinics like Kolan Hospital Group offer comprehensive cardiac care that accounts for these safety requirements. This ensures patients receive 24/7 specialist observation without unexpected costs.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the convenience of bundled airport pickups. They also value the constant presence of an interpreter during appointments. The clinic manages all pre-operative tests and hospital paperwork. Many patients find this removes the stress of navigating a foreign healthcare system.

How long is the hospital stay and overall recovery timeline after carotid endarterectomy in Turkey?

Patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy in Turkey typically stay in hospital for 1 to 2 nights. After discharge, a total in-country stay of 7 to 14 days is recommended before flying. Most people return to light activities within 2 weeks. Full internal healing is usually achieved by 6 weeks.

  • Hospital monitoring: Patients spend the first night in high-dependency units for strict neurological observation.
  • Clinical discharge: Surgeons typically remove neck drains and clear patients for discharge within 48 hours.
  • Travel clearance: Specialists perform a duplex ultrasound around day 4 to verify stable blood flow.
  • Full recovery: Most patients resume normal exercise and work routines 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Istanbul centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental or Memorial Healthcare Group offer a standard 24-hour stay, Australian patients should schedule 10+ days in-country. Long-haul flights increase clot risks early on. These centres require a final specialist sign-off for travel safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients found the overnight stay focused on rest and frequent check-ups. However, fatigue often persisted for several weeks. Turkey-bound travellers suggest avoiding quick returns home. This helps manage clot risks and allows for necessary post-operative ultrasounds.

What is a carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and how is it performed in Turkey?

Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a vascular surgery that removes plaque buildup from the neck arteries to prevent strokes. In Turkey, specialists at JCI-accredited centres in Istanbul perform this surgery. They open the carotid artery and strip away fatty deposits. Then they widen the vessel with a patch.

  • Anaesthesia options: Patients choose between general anaesthesia or an awake technique with local sedation.
  • Brain monitoring: Awake procedures allow surgeons to monitor neurological function in real-time during clamping.
  • Surgical steps: Surgeons make a small neck incision, clamp the artery, and remove plaque.
  • ICU recovery: Patients typically spend the first night in the ICU for blood pressure monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Basic CEA starts from $5,000. However, Turkish hospitals like Hisar Intercontinental often bundle VIP airport transfers and multi-language interpreters. This is vital for CEA patients. Post-operative stress and logistics should be minimised to maintain stable blood pressure during the early recovery phase.

Patient Consensus: The surgery feels more comfortable than expected. This is thanks to effective sedation and medication in Turkey. The first night in the ICU is the most challenging part because of noise. However, recovery is manageable thereafter.
