If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day
If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day. My knee feels so much better than it did before the surgery, with much less pain. Of course, recovery isn't instant. The biggest challenge for me right now is some morning stiffness, but once I get moving it improves. The clinic staff and surgeon were professional and answered all my questions about the full replacement, which included the kneecap and a Smith & Nephew implant. I can already bend my knee past 90 degrees easily. It was the right decision.
The coordination of services and language translation was excellent. We felt very cared for and the team listened to our concerns and we had professional, sophisticated and compassionate care.
My one concern was the difficulty we had with one of the translators at the hospital in Istanbul but it was because of difficulty with communication and misunderstanding.

It really can’t be helped, but that the hospital is a little far out of the center of Istanbul

Doctors and clinic staff immediately inspired confidence
Passed in the cardio department. My mom was also checked: cardio and neurology. Doctors and clinic staff immediately inspired confidence. Very polite, friendly staff in the clinic. Our coordinators Maria, Svetlana and Daria were in touch every minute, identified us with the clinic and doctors (Maria) very professionally, planned our meetings and advised hotels located near the clinic in the Sisli district (Svetlana and Daria). Our translators and assistants throughout the stay were Leila and Nino, many thanks to the girls for the attention to each of our requests, courtesy and excellent assistance in coordinating all the rendezvous, interpretation of tests and transport. Transportation was determined for us every day, starting with a meeting at the airport, daily visits to the clinic and transfer to the airport. Thank you all!

1. Very far from Istanbul. 3 hours away by car. 2. It was written that there will be a personal translator, but 1 interpreter for several patients and translators will transfer you to each other. 3 no on the part of doctors of personal approach to the patient, you feel yourself like a cander.

FAQ about Cardiology in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe for international patients to undergo heart surgery in Turkey?

Heart surgery in Turkey is safe for international patients at major centres holding Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Leading hospitals report survival rates between 95% and 99% for complex procedures. Facilities need a Health Tourism Authorisation certificate to treat foreigners legally.

  • Certified facilities: Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Sisli Hospital hold JCI and ISO certifications.
  • Expert surgeons: Dr Ali Fedakar has performed approximately 4,000 open-heart surgeries throughout his career.
  • Clinical affiliations: Anadolu Medical Center is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital.
  • Specialised technology: Memorial Goztepe Hospital uses a 512-slice CT for virtual cardiac angiography.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental handle 250,000+ patients annually. These high-volume centres often have dedicated cardiac units with on-site ICUs. This infrastructure allows specialists to manage complex cases and immediate recovery in-house.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report feeling confident due to polite, professional staff and modern equipment. They note that reliable interpreters and pre-arranged transport make the experience smooth.

What are the professional credentials of Turkish cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons?

Turkish cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons undergo extensive training. This includes a six-year medical degree and five to six years of postgraduate residency. Most hold specialist titles like Uzman Doktor or Profesör. Many also maintain European Society of Cardiology certifications and complete fellowships at leading American or British institutions.

  • Specialist academic titles: Doctors often hold Associate Professor or Professor rankings based on clinical research.
  • International fellowships: Surgeons often train at centres like St Thomas' Hospital in London.
  • Board certifications: Leading specialists hold European Society of Cardiology or Turkish Cardiology Board credentials.
  • High surgical volume: Experienced surgeons like Dr Mustafa Guden have performed 5,000+ complex cardiac procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish cardiac departments often feature specialised directors for niche fields like onco-cardiology or robotic surgery. This high level of specialisation means patients receive care from experts focusing on their specific condition. For example, Dr Hasim Ustunsoy at Anadolu Medical Center pioneered robotic heart surgery in the region. This offers technical precision that general surgeons may not provide.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe the cardiologists as honest and professional. They frequently note the supportive atmosphere and the presence of dedicated interpreters during consultations. Many feel confident in their health improvements due to modern equipment and the clear recommendations from specialists.

Are modern, minimally invasive, or robotic cardiac procedures available in Turkey?

Turkey offers minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery at JCI-accredited centres. Specialists use the Da Vinci XI robotic system for coronary bypass, valve repairs, and congenital defect closures. These procedures use tiny incisions. This avoids breaking the breastbone, reduces pain, and speeds up hospital discharge.

  • Robotic systems: Memorial Göztepe Hospital uses the Da Vinci XI for complex heart surgeries.
  • Valve interventions: Specialists at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental perform TAVI and mitral valve repairs.
  • Beating heart bypass: Dr Ali Fedakar at Hisar Hospital performs coronary bypass without stopping the heart.
  • Diagnostics: Memorial Göztepe features 512-slice CT scanners for virtual cardiac angiography imaging.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume is a major quality signal in Turkey. Major centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental handle 250,000+ patients annually. This massive scale allows surgeons to specialise in specific robotic techniques. Australian patients should look for clinics where surgeons have performed 4,000+ heart procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the rapid recovery times and professional translation services during their stay. They frequently praise the polite staff, modern equipment, and the efficiency of receiving tests and results in Istanbul.

How does follow-up care work for Australian patients once they return home after heart surgery in Turkey?

Australian patients transition to local care managed by their GP within one week of returning. They provide Turkish discharge summaries and imaging for local specialist review. A local cardiologist typically manages medications and monitors heart function alongside subsidised cardiac rehab programs.

  • GP coordination: Local doctors manage blood tests and wound care within seven days.
  • Medication transfer: GPs convert Turkish prescriptions to Australian-approved scripts and comparable local brands.
  • Specialist reviews: Cardiologists usually review recovery at four weeks and surgeons at six.
  • Cardiac rehab: Patients access Medicare-subsidised exercise and nutrition programs after 4–8 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental or Anadolu Medical Center provide comprehensive digital reports. This allows Australian GPs to integrate complex data into local records immediately. Patients should request specific valve or stent model numbers for accurate long-term local tracking.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the rapid delivery of test results helpful for their doctors. They note that clear medical documents and interpreter assistance help the transition to local healthcare.

What is the recommended stay duration in Turkey for a heart procedure?

Standard heart procedures in Turkey generally require a 3 to 14-day stay. Minimally invasive treatments like stents or ablations take 3 to 7 days. Major surgeries, such as valve replacements, require 10 to 14 days. Doctors issue a fit-to-fly certificate once the patient is clinically stable.

  • Major surgery stay: Expect 5–10 days in hospital and 5–7 days recovering locally.
  • Minor procedure stay: Catheter-based treatments usually require only 0–2 days of hospitalisation.
  • Clinical stabilisation: Patients remain under observation for about 7 days to manage pain.
  • Flight safety: Airlines require clearance 2–14 days post-op to prevent vascular complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume significantly influences recovery speed. Major centres like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental treat over 500,000 patients annually. These facilities use standardised recovery pathways. This high volume allows surgeons to move patients safely to local hotels within 5 days.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the transport and hotel arrangements make the 10-day recovery period feel seamless. Efficient interpretation services and polite staff help manage the stress of staying abroad.

Which hospitals in Turkey are highly recommended for cardiology treatments?

Highly recommended Turkish hospitals for cardiology include Anadolu Medical Center, Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, and Memorial Şişli Hospital. These JCI-accredited facilities specialise in robotic cardiac surgery, TAVI, and complex bypass grafting. They provide diagnostics like AI-supported 3D cardiac mapping and virtual coronary angiography in Istanbul and Ankara.

  • Expert affiliations: Anadolu Medical Center maintains a formal structural affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  • Modern technology: Memorial Göztepe Hospital uses 512-slice CT scanners for virtual cardiac angiography.
  • Surgeon experience: Dr Ali Fedakar at Hisar Hospital has performed approximately 4,000 open-heart surgeries.
  • Specialised units: Anadolu Medical Center features a dedicated department for cardio-oncology and structural heart diseases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high international patient volumes often have the most streamlined logistics. Hisar Hospital, for example, treats 250,000 people annually. Our data shows that facilities like Anadolu Medical Center provide personal coordinators and airport transfers. This support is vital for cardiac patients who should avoid physical stress during travel.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey value the professional surgical care. They find the clinical staff polite and attentive. Many note that on-site translators and clearly explained test results make the process feel much safer.
