What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it
What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it. My biggest fear was not understanding the treatment plan or feeling rushed, but that wasn’t the case at all. The dentist was very patient and took the time to explain each step to me in detail. It was reassuring. The overall organisation ran smoothly and the whole clinic team were professional and happy to answer my questions. Coordination via Bookimed simplified the whole process, which helped reduce the stress of having a medical appointment abroad. I left with clear information and a good overall impression.

I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism
Hello everyone, like many other people before an operation, I wasn't feeling very well. The staff at the clinic immediately reassured and accompanied me. Believe me or not, I didn't feel a thing. The dental surgeon fitted the 2 implants in 40 minutes, and I had no infections whatsoever. My Bookimed advisor (Péguy) was with me from the start and is still with me today. I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism. Sylvain B.

The wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care
It is a clean hospital and the wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care. The dentist and dental personnel can speak fluent English which is important for most people like I. For wisdom teeth extraction the cost was 20000 baht for 4 teeth( including medication and nurse charge), but it all depends if the teeth has impacted. I would highly recommend the clinic.

FAQ about Root canal treatment in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are Thai dentists qualified to perform root canal treatments?

Thai dentists are highly qualified to perform root canals. Specialist endodontists in centres like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) hold Master of Science degrees. Many are diplomates of the Thai Board of Endodontics and use operating microscopes. These tools allow for more precise treatments.

  • Expert endodontists: Specialists like Dr Napapas Nidhidvanich hold Master of Science degrees in Endodontics.
  • Specialised technology: Hospitals such as Navamin 9 use operating microscopes for complex re-treatments.
  • International standards: Major Bangkok facilities maintain JCI accreditation and ISO 9001:2015 quality management certifications.
  • Single-visit procedures: Specialists like Dr Avirut Truntipakorn provide efficient one-day root canal therapy options.
  • Rigorous training: Endodontists often complete residency training at leading institutions like Mahidol University.

Bookimed Expert Insight: General dentists handle basic cases, but Australians should seek clinics with endodontic departments. Specialists like Dr Sawannee Boonmongkolraksa have over 20 years of experience. Board-certified endodontists provide microscopic techniques. These are vital for multi-rooted molars or failed previous treatments.

Patient Consensus: Patients find specialist status and modern imaging tools more important than the location. Using rubber dam isolation and receiving written reports makes follow-up care in Australia easier.

What happens if I experience complications after returning to Australia from my root canal treatment in Thailand?

If complications arise after returning to Australia, the patient is responsible for arranging and funding local corrective care. Medicare and private health insurance rarely cover dental tourism issues. Patients must seek an Australian dentist or endodontist for assessment, infection management, or retreatment.

  • Clinical handover: Local dentists often require digital X-rays and treatment notes to begin repairs.
  • Corrective surgery: Failed canals may need microscopic endodontic retreatment to remove old filling materials.
  • Financial liability: Retreatment in Australia typically costs A$2,000–A$3,500, paid entirely out of pocket.
  • Urgent symptoms: Severe swelling or fever needs immediate attention to manage potential spreading infections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics often use high-quality Swiss materials, like Straumann. SmileBox Dental Clinic and Bangkok International Dental Center provide these brands. Australian dentists are familiar with these products. Patients who get a digital treatment summary mentioning these materials find follow-up care easier to coordinate.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand recommend getting digital copies of all X-rays and canal counts. Documenting the materials used helps Australian specialists assess the tooth without starting from scratch.

Do dental clinics in Thailand use modern technology for root canal procedures?

Dental clinics in Thailand use equipment like operating microscopes and rotary endodontic instruments for root canal procedures. Specialists in Bangkok clinics, such as Dr Avirut Truntipakorn at SmileBox Dental Clinic, frequently perform single-visit treatments. They use microscopic endodontics to manage complex cases with high precision.

  • Microscopic technology: Specialists use operating microscopes to locate hidden canals and remove foreign bodies accurately.
  • One-day procedures: Modern techniques allow endodontists to complete standard root canal treatments during a single visit.
  • Digital imaging: Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital use 3D/CT scanning and digital imaging for diagnostics.
  • Expert endodontists: Many clinicians hold Master of Science (MSc) degrees and Thai Board of Endodontics certification.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Australian patients seek the lowest price, the best value lies in dedicated dental hospitals. Clinics like BIDH maintain hospital-grade sterilisation standards and multiple departments of specialists. Choosing a clinic with 30+ doctors, like SmileBox Dental Clinic, helps ensure you see an endodontist.

Patient Consensus: Large private clinics in Bangkok provide digital X-rays and microscopes for treatment. Patients suggest confirming the use of rubber dam isolation and apex locators with the clinic in Thailand beforehand.

How long do I need to stay in Thailand for a root canal treatment?

A standard root canal in Thailand takes between 2 to 3 days. If the tooth needs a protective dental crown, plan for a 4 to 7-day stay. Complex infections or retreatments using microscopic endodontics may require up to 10 days for proper disinfection before sealing.

  • Simple cases: Specialists like Dr Avirut Truntipakorn often perform single-visit procedures in one day.
  • Crown fabrication: Custom porcelain crowns require 2–5 days for local laboratory manufacturing and bonding.
  • Infection management: Severe abscesses need antibacterial medication left inside the canal for 7 days.
  • Flying safety: Wait 24–48 hours after treatment to avoid pain from cabin pressure changes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics offer root canals. Choosing JCI-accredited centres like Bangkok International Dental Center provides access to specialist endodontists using operating microscopes. This technology helps treat complex canal anatomy in one day when general dentists might take multiple sessions.

Patient Consensus: Visitors to Thailand recommend leaving two buffer days in your holiday schedule. This allows for final bite adjustments. It also confirms the tooth feels comfortable before the long flight back to Australia.

Does a root canal treatment in Thailand hurt?

Root canal treatment in Thailand is typically painless. Dentists use local anaesthetic to provide complete numbness throughout the procedure. Most patients only feel minor pressure or vibrations. Leading clinics employ board-certified endodontists and microscopic technology for faster, more precise results.

  • Pain relief: Dentists apply topical numbing gel before injections for minimal discomfort.
  • Expert care: Specialists such as Dr Avirut Truntipakorn provide single-visit procedures for faster recovery.
  • Specialised tech: Microscopic endodontics at Intrarat Hospital allows for more precise, less invasive treatment.
  • Recovery: Post-operative tenderness usually lasts 2–7 days and is manageable with standard pain relievers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A standard root canal costs between $100 and $400. This saves up to 80% over Australian averages. High-volume centres like Bangkok International Dental Center perform 15,000+ procedures annually. This means specialist wait times are virtually non-existent compared to Australia.

Patient Consensus: The root canal itself is not painful if the tooth is properly numb. Many find pre-surgery infection pain is much worse than the actual treatment in Thailand.

Can I fly home immediately after getting a root canal in Thailand?

Patients can technically fly immediately after a root canal in Thailand. However, specialists advise waiting 24 to 48 hours. Cabin pressure changes during flight can cause barodontalgia. This occurs when trapped air in the treated tooth expands and causes sharp pain.

  • Pressure management: Air pressure changes worsen facial swelling and cause intense throbbing discomfort.
  • Seal integrity: Rapid altitude shifts can dislodge or crack temporary fillings before permanent crowns.
  • Clinical protocols: Specialist Dr Avirut Truntipakorn offers single-visit procedures to help international travellers.
  • Safety standards: Leading centres like Bangkok International Dental Center maintain JCI and ISO accreditations.
  • Precision tools: Surgeons use operating microscopes so canals are fully cleaned and sealed.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Single-visit root canals are popular in Bangkok. Even so, patients should confirm if they need a permanent crown. A 3-day stay allows tissue to settle before the flight back to Australia. Facilities like SmileBox Dental Clinic serve many Australians and specialise in high-precision, one-day endodontic therapy.

Patient Consensus: Travellers in Thailand note that mild pain relief one hour before takeoff helps. This manages pressure shifts. Most find the savings worth the short wait in Bangkok before flying home.

What should I eat after receiving my root canal treatment in Thailand?

After a root canal treatment in Thailand, patients should eat soft, lukewarm foods. Savoury rice porridge (Jok) or steamed silken tofu are good options. Avoid extreme temperatures, spicy seasonings, and crunchy textures. This protects the temporary filling and sensitive gum tissue during recovery.

  • Wait to eat: Avoid food until the local anaesthetic wears off to prevent cheek biting.
  • Soft Thai dishes: Choose Jok (rice porridge) or Khao Tom (rice soup) at room temperature.
  • Gentle protein: Opt for steamed silken tofu or fluffy Thai scrambled eggs over soft rice.
  • Avoid sticky rice: Sticky rice is too dense and can pull out temporary dental fillings.
  • Skip spices: Request dishes "mai phet" (not spicy) to avoid irritating sensitive gums.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Bangkok clinics, such as SmileBox Dental Clinic, specialise in single-visit root canal procedures. They use operating microscopes to help reduce post-operative discomfort. Patients can typically return to a normal diet faster. However, sticking to ripe mango or papaya for the first 24 hours remains the safest choice.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that starting with cool, bland foods like smoothies provides immediate comfort. Most recommend chewing on the opposite side. They suggest introducing warm, non-spicy soups once the initial soreness fades.
