Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing hospital-based clinics provides superior safety standards for international patients. Bangkok International Dental Hospital (BIDH) maintains strict surgical-grade sterilisation protocols rarely seen in standard private practices. Many Australian patients prefer these specialized hospitals because they offer sedation dentistry for extractions and initial fittings. Leading specialists like Dr. Vikram Bhatia are certified Invisalign Platinum Providers, ensuring high-quality results even with removable aligner systems.

Data verified by Bookimed as of July 2026, based on patient requests and official quotes from 232 clinics worldwide. Median costs are based on real invoices (2025–2026) and updated monthly. Actual prices may vary.

What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it
What would I say to a friend who’s hesitating? Just go for it. My biggest fear was not understanding the treatment plan or feeling rushed, but that wasn’t the case at all. The dentist was very patient and took the time to explain each step to me in detail. It was reassuring. The overall organisation ran smoothly and the whole clinic team were professional and happy to answer my questions. Coordination via Bookimed simplified the whole process, which helped reduce the stress of having a medical appointment abroad. I left with clear information and a good overall impression.

I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism
Hello everyone, like many other people before an operation, I wasn't feeling very well. The staff at the clinic immediately reassured and accompanied me. Believe me or not, I didn't feel a thing. The dental surgeon fitted the 2 implants in 40 minutes, and I had no infections whatsoever. My Bookimed advisor (Péguy) was with me from the start and is still with me today. I would like to thank BIDC and also Bookimed for their professionalism. Sylvain B.

The wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care
It is a clean hospital and the wisdom teeth extraction was done so fast with utmost care. The dentist and dental personnel can speak fluent English which is important for most people like I. For wisdom teeth extraction the cost was 20000 baht for 4 teeth( including medication and nurse charge), but it all depends if the teeth has impacted. I would highly recommend the clinic.

Our Braces Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Braces, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Ceramic Braces

These are orthodontic braces that use clear or tooth-colored brackets to align teeth discretely.

Pros: Less noticeable than metal brackets, making them aesthetically pleasing. Suitable for adults and teens, they offer similar effectiveness to traditional braces with a subtle appearance.
Cons: Ceramic materials are more fragile and may require more care than metal brackets. They can stain if not properly maintained.
Effectiveness: Achieves up to 90% alignment success rate in dental correction.
Duration: 18-24 months
Recovery: Not needed
Best for: Individuals seeking discreet dental alignment. Suitable for mild to moderate bite correction.

Damon Braces

These are self-ligating orthodontic braces that use a sliding mechanism to hold the wire, allowing teeth to move more freely and comfortably.

Pros: Requires fewer adjustments, reducing orthodontist visits by up to 50%. The sliding mechanism applies less pressure, enhancing comfort compared to traditional metal brackets.
Cons: May not be as discreet as lingual braces, with visibility similar to ceramic braces. Not suitable for all complex orthodontic cases.
Effectiveness: Achieves significant dental alignment with up to 70% fewer extractions.
Duration: 12-24 months
Recovery: Not needed
Best for: Ideal for moderate to severe dental alignment issues in patients aged 12-50.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are dental appliances fitted behind the teeth, making them invisible from the front.

Pros: Completely hidden from view, making them ideal for those seeking discretion. They provide effective teeth straightening with a success rate of 95%.
Cons: Lingual braces can cause initial discomfort and speech difficulties, unlike ceramic braces which are less intrusive.
Effectiveness: Achieves up to 95% success in dental alignment.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: Not needed
Best for: Adults and teens requiring discreet orthodontic treatment.

FAQ about Braces in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How do I find a qualified orthodontist in Thailand for braces treatment?

To find a qualified orthodontist in Thailand, verify they hold a Diploma of the Thai Board of Orthodontics. This confirms they completed a specialist residency. Research accredited hospitals like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) or Bumrungrad International Hospital. These facilities maintain JCI standards and employ specialists trained internationally.

  • Board certification: Verify the specialist holds a Diploma of the Thai Board of Orthodontics.
  • Clinical accreditation: Focus on JCI-accredited facilities like Bangkok International Dental Center for safety.
  • Specialised training: Check that doctors have completed three-year orthodontic residency programmes.
  • International credentials: Look for specialists with memberships in the Royal College of Surgeons.
  • Diagnostic technology: Confirm the clinic uses digital panoramic and cephalometric X-rays for planning.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai dentistry follows a tiered system where general dentists can legally offer braces. Data shows that top-rated specialists often hold master’s degrees from international universities. Dr Apichart Veerawattanatigul at BIDC is one such example. Patients should look for these academic credentials for high standards of orthodontic care.

Patient Consensus: Bring Australian records to help with planning. Patients in Thailand recommend asking for a formal written plan. You should also confirm how the clinic manages follow-up visits before you fly home.

Can Australian tourists get traditional wire braces during a short holiday in Thailand?

Australian tourists generally cannot get traditional wire braces during a short holiday in Thailand. This orthodontic treatment requires mechanical adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks for up to 24 months. While Thai clinics offer high-quality care, traditional braces are unsuitable for travellers who cannot return for regular maintenance.

  • Adjustment needs: Wire braces require tightening and structural modifications every 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Transfer risks: Most Australian orthodontists refuse to adjust braces fitted by overseas providers.
  • Emergency repairs: Damaged brackets or wires require immediate in-person attention from a specialist.
  • Clinical timeframe: Reputable Bangkok centres require stays of at least 6 to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bangkok Smile Dental Clinic specialises in planning fast-tracked dental workflows for international patients with limited time. They advise against traditional wire braces for short stays. However, they can often coordinate clear aligner scans and manufacturing within a single trip. This allows patients to manage their straightening journey back in Australia.

Patient Consensus: Travellers in Thailand find a short trip suffices for initial orthodontic assessments. It also works for minor cosmetic dental adjustments. Experienced patients recommend confirming a full treatment schedule and digital follow-up options with the clinic before arriving.

Are clear aligners like Invisalign a more viable option for Australians travelling to Thailand for dental treatment?

Clear aligners like Invisalign or MOOV work for Australians visiting Thailand for simple cosmetic cases. However, complex orthodontic travel remains logistically demanding. Costs in Thailand range from $1,100 to $2,100. This offers potential savings of 68% compared to Australian averages.

  • Technique suitability: Removable aligners suit minor crowding. They also require fewer physical adjustments than fixed braces.
  • Provider credentials: Experts like Dr Vikram Bhatia at SmileBox Dental Clinic are certified Invisalign Platinum Providers.
  • High-volume centres: Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) is JCI-accredited and serves 15,000+ patients annually.
  • Refinement protocols: Mid-treatment tray adjustments may require unplanned return flights to Bangkok for new scans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics offer Invisalign and MOOV clear aligners. This local alternative can be more affordable for Australians. JCI-accredited specialists manage both options. This choice often lets patients invest more in digital mapping for better remote tracking.

Patient Consensus: Clear aligners are travel-friendly as trays can be made before departure. Confirm if treatment plans include refinements and remote monitoring. This helps avoid extra flights for tray adjustments in Thailand.

Do dental clinics in Thailand charge international patients different rates than local Thai residents?

Reputable private dental clinics in Thailand maintain a single-pricing policy for international and local patients. Major centres like Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) and Smile Signature Dental Clinic use transparent fee structures. This standard pricing applies to braces and other orthodontic treatments.

  • Standardised fees: Large centres enforce identical base rates for locals and overseas visitors.
  • Material choices: Premium brands like 3M ESPE, ORMCO, and Straumann cost more than local options.
  • Accreditation standards: JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International maintain uniform pricing for all.
  • Timeframe factors: Fast-tracked laboratory work for short-stay tourists may incur extra processing fees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Base prices are identical. However, Australian patients often pay more because they select premium systems. Clinics like SmileBox and BIDC offer American or Swiss brands like Invisalign and Damon. These imported materials drive the final bill higher than local Thai alternatives.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that asking for a written, itemised treatment plan keeps costs clear. They suggest confirming if retainers and X-rays are included before starting treatment.
