How Much Does Bankart repair Cost in Thailand in AUD?

Bankart repair in Thailand typically costs from AUD $7,189 / ฿A244,425 to AUD $12,221 / ฿A415,523. Final figures depend on the surgical technique, the number of suture anchors used, and the clinic category. Australians often save around 31% compared to local private prices, where the average cost is AUD $14,090 / ฿A479,074. Fees generally cover the surgical procedure, anaesthetic, and a standard hospital stay of one to two nights.

  • Arthroscopic technique: Often commands a premium of 15–20% over traditional open surgery methods.
  • Hospital location: Facilities in Bangkok generally charge more than regional hubs like Pattaya or Krabi.
  • JCI accreditation: Premium hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) often have higher price points.
  • Pre-operative diagnostics: MRI scans and blood work usually add significant separate costs to the total.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a major Thai facility provides JCI-standard care at a fraction of Australian private costs. Hospitals like Bumrungrad International or Bangkok Hospital Pattaya handle thousands of international patients annually. Some specialists, such as Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn, even hold clinical training credentials from prestigious Australian institutions. High-tier packages in Bangkok often bundle surgical fees with luxury recovery suites, providing excellent value for money.

I am healing faster than I expected, and I am back to my computer, and piano based work 10 days later
Menness clinic is very professional, and I highly recommend them for carpal tunnel release. I had a bilateral open release done by Dr. Big, the orthopedic surgeon on staff at Menness clinic. I was nervous going in because my CTS was severe and I have cerebral palsy. I was pleased to learn that Dr. Big had performed surgery on people with CP previously, and knew exactly what to expect, and how to operate on me to get the best outcome possible. I am healing faster than I expected, and I am back to my computer, and piano based work 10 days later.

FAQ about Bankart repair in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the success rates for a Bankart repair in Thailand?

Bankart repair in Thailand achieves success rates between 90% and 95% for functional recovery. Hospitals like Bumrungrad International Hospital report orthopaedic success rates exceeding 97%. These outcomes align with global standards for shoulder stabilisation used by US-trained specialists.

  • Patient satisfaction: Between 86% and 92% of patients report high satisfaction with mobility.
  • Sporting return: Over 86% of patients successfully return to athletic activities following surgery.
  • Revision rates: Follow-up procedures are required in only 11% to 14% of cases.
  • Surgical techniques: Clinics use three or more suture anchors to lower recurrence rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai orthopaedic centres are well suited for Australians. Many lead surgeons, such as those at Intrarat Hospital, hold Australian clinical certifications. This means Bangkok rehabilitation protocols are easily followed by Australian physiotherapists.

Patient Consensus: Success in Thailand depends on shoulder stability and finding a clear surgeon. Most patients measure results by returning to sport without stiffness or apprehension.

What qualifications do shoulder surgeons in Thailand hold for Bankart repairs?

Shoulder surgeons in Thailand must hold a Doctor of Medicine degree. They then complete a 4-year residency approved by the Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand. Specialist surgeons also complete fellowships in sports medicine or arthroscopy. This allows them to perform minimally invasive labral repairs in JCI-accredited hospitals.

  • Board certification: Surgeons hold a Diploma of the Thai Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
  • Specialist training: Most complete extra 1–2 year fellowships in arthroscopy and sports medicine.
  • International credentials: Many top specialists hold fellowships from clinics in Australia or the US.
  • Facility standards: Qualified surgeons operate in centres like Bumrungrad International with JCI accreditation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai orthopaedic specialists often bridge the gap between Asian and Western training. For instance, Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn at Intrarat Hospital trained in Melbourne, Australia. Choosing surgeons with these specific AU-based credentials helps their surgical approach align with Australian rehabilitation standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand often check if their surgeon has a sports medicine fellowship. They also suggest asking about telehealth follow-up options for when they return home to Australia.

How long must an Australian medical tourist stay in Thailand following a Bankart repair?

Australian medical tourists stay 10 to 14 days in Thailand for a Bankart repair. This allows for wound healing, drainage monitoring, and a follow-up at a JCI-accredited facility. These steps are vital before the 9-hour flight back to Australia.

  • Hospital admission: Patients typically spend 1 to 3 nights in a private hospital room.
  • Follow-up appointment: Surgeons conduct a mandatory check around day 10 to clear flight travel.
  • Physiotherapy access: Staying 21 days allows for early passive range-of-motion sessions with English-speaking specialists.
  • Flight safety: Extending the stay reduces risks of deep vein thrombosis during long-haul travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand’s leading centres like Bumrungrad International Hospital serve over 1,000,000 patients annually. These facilities specialise in international logistics. Surgeons such as Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn have specific Australian clinical training. This familiarity with Australian standards helps the post-operative rehabilitation plan align with follow-up requirements back home.

What does the typical recovery timeline look like after a Bankart repair in Thailand?

Typical recovery after a Bankart repair in Thailand takes 4 to 6 months for most daily activities. Returning to impact sports requires 6 to 9 months of rehabilitation. Patients travelling from Australia should plan to stay 7 to 10 days before flying home.

  • Hospital stay: Patients usually remain in the ward for 1 day after shoulder surgery.
  • Immobilisation phase: A rigid sling is required 24/7 for the first 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Fit-to-fly window: Surgeons typically issue travel clearance 7 to 10 days after the procedure.
  • Driving resumption: Most patients return to driving around week 6 after sling removal.
  • Sporting timeline: Low-impact cycling starts at 3 months, while contact sports require 9 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many JCI-accredited centres in Bangkok provide excellent care. Choosing specialists like Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn at Intrarat Hospital adds a layer of familiarity. He completed clinical training in Melbourne. This means he understands the recovery expectations and rehabilitation standards Australian patients require back home.

Which hospitals in Thailand are recommended for an orthopaedic Bankart repair?

Recommended hospitals for Bankart repair in Thailand include Bumrungrad International, Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, and Vejthani Hospital. These facilities hold JCI accreditation. They use specialised departments like the Sports Medicine and Joint Centre to treat chronic shoulder instability. Surgeons perform this using minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery.

  • Bumrungrad International: This Bangkok facility holds Global Healthcare Accreditation and treats over 500,000 international patients annually.
  • Bangkok Hospital Pattaya: This major diagnostic centre serves the East coast with JCI and Temos accreditations.
  • Vejthani Hospital: This centre focus on orthopaedics and maintains multiple joint care clinical certifications.
  • Bangkok International Hospital: The facility features specialised Bone and Brain approaches for integrated surgical recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bangkok is the primary hub, but Bangkok Hospital Pattaya offers equivalent JCI-standard care. Australian patients may find superior value at Intrarat Hospital. Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn there holds a clinical training certificate from SureCell in Melbourne. This provides a unique link to Australian orthopaedic standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients suggest selecting a shoulder specialist over just a hospital brand. They also recommend confirming telehealth follow-up plans. Experience with international cases in Thailand encourages smooth scheduling and clear English communication during rehabilitation.
