Even at just 15 days post-op, the initial aspect is already better than expected
Seeing the surgical site for the first time was the moment everything finally felt real. Even at just 15 days post-op, the initial aspect is already better than expected. We used the penile inversion technique, and while the results look promising, the recovery requires a lot of patience and steady commitment to the healing process. My biggest challenge at this stage is definitely the physical discomfort of being seated for a long time. It is a process. The clinic staff has been very attentive during my stay, and I am expecting to have the catheter removed very soon. To anyone else preparing for this surgery, it’s not easy but it is a good experience overall.

The initial appearance is honestly better than expected, even with all the healing that’s still to come
The initial appearance is honestly better than expected, even with all the healing that’s still to come. Seeing that was a huge relief. The surgeon and staff provided great support, making me feel secure from the start. Recovery is no joke. It was a positive step when the catheter was removed, but managing the dilation sessions has been very challenging. My biggest concern is the swelling, and I'm focused on trusting the process. The care and the surgical foundation are solid, which is why I'm rating everything positively.
Everything was perfect. The staff were kind, professional, and very supportive throughout the whole process. The doctor explained everything clearly and made me feel comfortable and cared for. The clinic was clean, organized, and exceeded my expectations. I’m very happy with my experience and grateful for the excellent care I received.
Nothing to complain about. Everything went smoothly and I was satisfied with the overall experience.

My biggest worry going into this was the quality of post-operative care, and that's where things fell short. While the surgeon's work was professional, the support from the clinic staff felt disorganized and was a source of stress during a vulnerable time. The clinic itself could also be improved. It’s a very mixed feeling. I can’t judge the aesthetic outcome yet because everything is still far too swollen to see clearly. On a positive note, getting the catheter removed was a definite relief and a good milestone. The medical part was handled, but the care aspect was lacking.
Language was a problem. Food was horrible, no attempt to take into account cultural differences. Had to wait over an hour for scheduled appointments. Minimal care by all. I would not recommend Wansiri Hospital to any of my friends. Staff would not reach out to my wife, when requested, to resolve problems.

I can honestly say the initial appearance is better than expected
My biggest worry was what the final result would look like. I can honestly say the initial appearance is better than expected. The surgeon used the penile inversion technique, and both the surgeon and the staff have been excellent. Recovery is, of course, a challenge. The catheter is manageable with proper care, and I am following the dilation schedule as instructed, but sitting for long periods is currently very difficult. It’s a real process. For anyone else getting ready for this, my advice is to be calm ☺️ and be happy for the wonderful physical change coming your way!

I wholeheartedly recommend Wansiri Hospital
The hospital is great. I have been looked after since the moment I arrived. The medical outcome is superb. The nurses were very kind and attentive. The only suggestion I would have is to pay in advance as foreign bank transfers can be tricky. I wholeheartedly recommend Wansiri Hospital
Nurses and translator were so kind. The doctor was wonderful
Everything was absolutely great!

FAQ about Adam's apple surgery in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is tracheal shave surgery in Thailand considered a safe procedure?

Tracheal shave surgery in Thailand is safe when performed by board-certified plastic surgeons in accredited facilities. Leading Bangkok hospitals like Yanhee International and Asia Cosmetic Hospital maintain JCI accreditation and follow international protocols. Specialists there perform this procedure as a routine part of gender-affirming care.

  • Safety protocols: Asia Cosmetic Hospital operates under the supervision of anaesthetists and cardiologists.
  • Clinical facilities: Wansiri Hospital uses theatres that meet clean-room standards with HEPA air filtration systems.
  • Expert specialists: Dr Worapon Ratanalert at Yanhee specialises in Adam’s apple shaving techniques.
  • Clinical outcomes: Asia Cosmetic Hospital maintains a published record of 0% patient complication rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many clinics offer this surgery. However, choosing those with a multidisciplinary setting adds safety. Yanhee International Hospital serves 450,000+ patients annually across 36 departments. This provides immediate access to ENT specialists or emergency teams if airway complications arise.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the intensive post-operative support provided by Thai clinics. Many note that VIP nursing care and clear English-speaking staff make the recovery feel safer.

What are the potential risks and complications of Adam's apple surgery in Thailand?

Adam's apple surgery in Thailand is generally safe when performed by experienced specialists. Potential complications include temporary throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, or neck pain. Serious risks are rare with board-certified surgeons at JCI-accredited facilities. These include permanent voice changes, nerve injury, or airway issues from swelling.

  • Vocal integrity: Surgeons avoid over-resection to prevent permanent hoarseness or a reduced vocal range.
  • Swelling management: Post-operative swelling can affect breathing. Clinics monitor patients for one day to manage this risk.
  • Nerve protection: Specialists use precise techniques to avoid damaging the nearby recurrent laryngeal nerves.
  • Cosmetic outcomes: Risks include visible scarring, asymmetric reduction, or under-shaving that requires future revision.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Asia Cosmetic Hospital reports a 0% complication rate. Even so, Australian patients should seek specialised surgeons such as Dr Worapon Ratanalert. He lists tracheal shaving as a core specialty. Large centres like Yanhee International Hospital provide English-speaking staff and anaesthetists to support patient safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand report that short-term throat tightness and swallowing difficulties are common. Following pre-op instructions like stopping smoking helps a smooth recovery. Many recommend getting clear post-op instructions to manage any hoarseness after returning to Australia.

What type of specialist should I choose for Adam's apple surgery in Thailand?

Specialists for Adam's apple surgery in Thailand are typically board-certified plastic surgeons or otolaryngologists. They often specialise in facial feminisation surgery. Experts like Dr Worapon Ratanalert at Yanhee International Hospital understand laryngeal anatomy. This allows them to shave thyroid cartilage while protecting the vocal cords.

  • Board certification: Qualified surgeons hold certification from the Medical Council of Thailand.
  • Clinical experience: Specialists often lead dedicated gender-affirming departments with 1,000+ annual patients.
  • Specific expertise: Choose doctors like Dr Kittichai Sipiyarak with fellowship training in MTF surgery.
  • Facility safety: Top clinics like Asia Cosmetic Hospital maintain JCI accreditation and ISO standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many plastic surgeons offer this. However, patients often find better results at hospitals with dedicated sex reassignment departments. Yanhee International Hospital serves 450,000 patients annually. They employ specialists like Dr Worapon Ratanalert who focus on Adam's apple shaving.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand recommend surgeons who provide specific thyroid cartilage reduction galleries. They also suggest confirming the surgeon has active hospital privileges. This helps provide follow-up support if vocal quality changes occur.

Will Adam's apple surgery in Thailand affect my voice?

Adam's apple surgery in Thailand generally does not affect the voice. Experienced surgeons perform the procedure, known as a tracheal shave. They remove excess thyroid cartilage while staying above the vocal cord attachment point. This protection preserves natural pitch and vocal quality.

  • Technique focus: Surgeons remove cartilage above the vocal cords to avoid nerve damage.
  • Temporary effects: Hoarseness or weakness often occurs for 2–14 days due to anaesthesia.
  • Safety standards: Specialists like Dr Worapon Ratanalert at Yanhee International Hospital perform targeted shaving.
  • Patient volume: Bangkok clinics serve 2,000+ international patients annually with high success rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Thai clinics often bundle Adam's apple shaving into gender-affirming packages. At Asia Cosmetic Hospital, these packages start from A$1,200 and include VIP nursing care. This represents a saving of 83% compared to the $6,500 Australian average for the same procedure.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand report that any initial raspy feeling usually fades within a week. Most describe the recovery as straightforward and are pleased the incision remains nearly invisible.

How long do I need to stay in Thailand after my Adam's apple surgery?

Most patients should stay in Thailand for 5 to 7 days after Adam's apple surgery. This timeframe allows for a 1-night hospital stay and initial wound monitoring. It also includes a follow-up appointment. Surgeons typically remove stitches around day 7 before clearing patients for their flight home.

  • Clinical timeline: Plan a total trip of 7–10 days to include pre-op consultations.
  • Hospital stay: Packages at Asia Cosmetic Hospital include 1 night of inpatient care.
  • Stitch removal: Surgeons generally remove sutures between 5 and 7 days post-surgery.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks to let the incision heal.
  • Flight safety: Staying a full week prevents issues with swelling during air travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages start from $800, they often exclude hotel accommodation. Budgeting for a 6-night hotel stay near JCI-accredited facilities like Yanhee International Hospital provides quick access to your surgeon for the day-5 check-up.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend allowing 1 week in Bangkok to manage localised swelling and throat discomfort. Building extra days into the itinerary prevents stress if the surgeon requests additional wound monitoring.

Will the scar from Adam's apple surgery in Thailand be visible?

The scar from Adam's apple surgery in Thailand is designed to be very discreet. Surgeons typically make a small 2–4 cm incision within a natural skin crease. This placement makes the scar difficult to see during normal conversation. It eventually fades into a faint, thin line.

  • Incision placement: Surgeons hide the cut in a natural neck crease to mask the mark.
  • Initial appearance: Scars appear red or pink initially but fade significantly over several months.
  • Technique used: Tracheal shaving reduces the thyroid cartilage through a small, precise opening.
  • Clinical protocols: Clinics like Asia Cosmetic Hospital often include VIP nursing care for post-operative support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bangkok clinics like Yanhee International and Wansiri Hospital serve thousands of international patients annually. This includes many patients from Australia. Specialised surgeons, such as Dr. Worapon Ratanalert, list Adam's apple shaving as a specialty. This high volume often leads to refined stitching techniques that minimise permanent visibility.

Patient Consensus: Patients report the incision is usually small and hidden in a crease. The mark looks most obvious in the first few months. It then gradually fades into a faint line.

What is the typical recovery timeline following Adam's apple surgery in Thailand?

Most patients return to light activities and work within 3 to 7 days after a tracheal shave in Thailand. Initial swelling and bruising generally resolve within 10 days. Final results are typically visible 3 months post-surgery once internal healing is complete.

  • Hospital stay: Most Bangkok clinics require a 1-day hospital stay for monitoring.
  • Initial recovery: Return to work typically occurs between 3 and 7 days post-op.
  • Physical restrictions: Patients must avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least 4 weeks.
  • Voice rest: Surgeons often recommend several days of minimal talking to protect the voice box.
  • Long-term healing: Residual mild swelling may persist for 6 weeks before disappearing entirely.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Asia Cosmetic Hospital often bundle nursing care into their A$1,200 packages. This is a significant advantage in Thailand. Dedicated nursing reduces the risk of early complications. It also ensures the incision site is monitored professionally during the critical first 24 hours.

Patient Consensus: Proper medical terms like thyroid cartilage reduction should be confirmed with surgeons before travel. Patients note that while swelling subsides within 2 weeks, results continue to refine for up to 6 weeks.
