Set aside more money for the treatment than is stated. Taxes were added on top at the clinic, and the dental cleaning also costs extra. I ended up with additional costs of around $100.
It was very easy to book the appointment, and on the day of the treatment everything went really quickly. Within an hour, my teeth were beautifully whitened.
One negative aspect was the lack of transparency regarding the costs. The description of the treatment suggested that, for $370, you would receive three sessions of bleaching plus a professional teeth clean. However, when I got there, I had to pay extra for the teeth cleaning, and on top of that, a hefty amount of tax was suddenly added to the total price, which meant the whole thing ended up costing nearly $100 more. Fortunately, I don’t trust anything, so I’d already factored in additional costs when planning my budget. Even so, it would be nice to be able to estimate the costs in advance.

FAQ about Wisdom tooth removal in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why should I consider getting my wisdom teeth removed in South Korea?

South Korea offers high-quality wisdom tooth removal using 3D CT imaging and surgical techniques. Patients access board-certified oral surgeons in Seoul and Incheon. These surgeons are often based at university hospitals like Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. The procedure is efficient, with options for same-day consultation and extraction.

  • Technological precision: Clinics like Woosoo Dental Clinic use 3D CT imaging for safer, more accurate extractions.
  • Expert specialists: Dr Lim Gi-hyeon at 365 Seoul OneTop Dental Clinic is a board-certified maxillofacial surgeon.
  • Significant savings: Procedure costs range from $500 to $1,600, saving up to 50% over Australia.
  • Efficient scheduling: University hospitals often remove all four wisdom teeth in a single surgical session.
  • English-speaking care: Major centres like Hanyang University Medical Center provide dedicated support for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Local clinics are excellent for simple cases. However, Bookimed data shows university-affiliated hospitals are the gold standard for complex, impacted teeth. These centres, such as Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, handle 1.5 million patients annually. They provide the surgical depth needed for difficult cases while maintaining safety protocols.

Patient Consensus: South Korea provides major cost savings with technical quality that matches or exceeds Australian standards. Patients recommend choosing specialist oral surgeons over general dentists. These surgeons provide faster recovery and more precise work.

Do dentists in Korea use anaesthesia for wisdom tooth removal?

Dentists in South Korea use anaesthesia for every wisdom tooth removal for a painless experience. Standard procedures involve local anaesthesia with lidocaine. University hospitals and specialist clinics offer IV sedation or general anaesthesia for nervous patients or complex surgical extractions.

  • Standard anaesthesia: Local injections of lidocaine numb the site for simple or surgical extractions.
  • Sleep dentistry: Conscious IV sedation is available at specialist centres for patients with anxiety.
  • Hospital options: University hospitals provide general anaesthesia for impacted teeth or multiple extractions.
  • Advanced imaging: Clinics like Woosoo Dental use 3D CT scans to plan safe nerve-sparing extractions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While local anaesthesia is standard everywhere, sleep dentistry (su면 마취) is a specific specialty in Korea. Surgeons like Dr Lim Gi-hyeon at 365 Seoul OneTop Dental Clinic are board-certified in dental anaesthesiology. Choosing a clinic with this specific certification provides safer sedation monitoring than a general dental surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients can expect to feel some pressure and hear instruments during the procedure. They remain completely numb throughout. Patients in Korea recommend asking for extra injections if they feel any sensitivity during the extraction.

How long does recovery after wisdom tooth removal in South Korea take?

Initial recovery after wisdom tooth removal in South Korea takes 3 to 10 days. Swelling and pain usually subside by day 5. Surgical extractions for impacted teeth require up to a week of rest. Stitches are typically removed by specialists after 7 days.

  • First 72 hours: Peak swelling and jaw stiffness occur; dentists recommend ice packs and soft foods.
  • Suture removal: Surgeons at clinics like Woosoo Dental Clinic usually remove stitches after 7 days.
  • Flying restrictions: Patients must wait 14 days before flying to prevent dry socket from cabin pressure.
  • Full healing: Soft tissue closes within 2 weeks, though bone remodelling continues for several months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: South Korea is famous for fast-paced care. However, complex extractions often involve specialist oral surgeons like Dr Lim Gi-hyeon who use 3D CT imaging. This precision planning helps reduce post-operative jaw trauma. It potentially shortens the initial inflammation period compared to traditional methods.

Patient Consensus: Plan a 7-day buffer in Seoul. This allows time for healing and follow-up before the long flight home. During the first week, salt water rinses and sleeping with an elevated head help manage discomfort.

How do I find an English-speaking dentist in Seoul for wisdom tooth removal?

English-speaking dentists in Seoul are concentrated in foreigner-friendly districts like Gangnam, Myeong-dong, and Itaewon. Many surgeons at university hospitals and private clinics hold US qualifications. These come from institutions like the University of Pennsylvania or New York University. This supports fluent communication and international standards of care.

  • Specialist expertise: Dr Sungho Kim is a US-trained, English-proficient dentist. He practises at Gangnam Gentle Dental Clinic.
  • Accredited facilities: Seoul National University Bundang Hospital holds Global Healthcare Accreditation. This is for international patient services.
  • University referrals: General dentists often refer complex, nerve-adjacent extractions to specialised university dental hospitals.
  • Language support: Leading centres like Chung-Ang University Hospital provide dedicated English-speaking medical staff. They assist with consultations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many local clinics offer basic extractions, patients with impacted teeth should prioritise university-affiliated hospitals. Data shows these centres handle massive volumes, such as 32,000+ operations annually. They also provide professional translators to navigate complex surgical risks.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Seoul recommend university hospitals for surgical removals for safety and clear English communication. High satisfaction is common at clinics near Itaewon and Gangnam. Staff there help with quick bookings via social media.

Can I get my wisdom teeth removed on the same day as my consultation in South Korea?

Many English-speaking clinics in South Korea provide same-day wisdom tooth removal following a consultation. Specialists often complete the initial assessment, X-rays, and extraction within a single visit. Complex cases or impacted teeth requiring general anaesthesia may need separate appointments. Major dental hospitals often handle these cases.

  • Same-day approach: Common at international-friendly Seoul clinics for simple or surgical extractions.
  • Clinical assessment: Requires physical check-ups and 3D CT imaging before the surgeon proceeds.
  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons like Dr Lim Gi-hyeon at 365 Seoul OneTop Dental Clinic specialise in extractions.
  • Travel restrictions: Patients must avoid flying for 48–72 hours after surgery due to pressure changes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Small clinics offer speed. But complex impacted teeth are best treated at university hospitals. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is one such centre. These centres have the specialised anaesthetic teams needed for difficult cases. Coordination is smoother at clinics like Chung-Ang University Hospital, which provides dedicated English-speaking staff.

Patient Consensus: Getting assessments and extractions done in 30 minutes is possible in the Republic of Korea. Most people find that calling ahead to confirm same-day availability makes the process seamless.
