He studied neuroscience at Indiana University. He completed a neurology residency at the University of Minnesota. He finished a Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

He previously directed the Epilepsy Center at Inje Haeundae Paik Hospital. He also led the Neurology Center at Severance Hospital. He is Honorary President of the Korean Epilepsy Society. He is President of the Korean Neurological Association. His awards include the 2018 Distinguished Service Award from the Korean Epilepsy Society and the 2014 Songpa Medical Award. His research focuses on epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology. He has published many papers, including in Acta Neurologica Scandinavica (2020), Journal of Neurology (2020), and BMC Neurology (2019). He contributed to Clinical Epileptology and wrote chapters on epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs.
