The clinic seems to be quite good, but during the operation the cataract of the left eye, which lasted more than three hours, my vision is no more than 15% and I had to do the second operation of the left eye. Although the right eye was operated for 10-12 minutes and vision without glasses is up to 60%

FAQ about Diagnostics in India

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How do I ensure the accuracy and accreditation of a diagnostic laboratory in India?

Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is the main marker of accuracy in India. These facilities follow ISO 15189 standards for technical competence and reliable results. Major hospitals in Bengaluru and Delhi often hold NABL and JCI certifications for international quality benchmarks.

  • NABL certification: Confirms the laboratory meets international ISO 15189 standards for medical testing.
  • Specific lab scope: Verify if the laboratory is authorised for the exact test needed.
  • Technological infrastructure: Leading centres like BLK Super Speciality Hospital use equipment similar to European hospitals.
  • Processing location: Confirm if tests are performed in-house or outsourced to central hubs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical volume often correlates with diagnostic reliability in India. Large networks like Manipal Hospitals or Global Hospital Chennai serve millions of patients annually. They maintain NABL-accredited labs across multiple sites. These high-volume centres typically have the budget for external proficiency testing. This validates their accuracy against global peers.

Patient Consensus: Patients in India recommend confirming fasting rules and handling procedures before collection. This helps prevent errors. They note that transparent reports with clear method details and reference ranges are strong signs of a reliable facility.

Are home sample collection services reliable for diagnostic testing in India?

Home sample collection is highly reliable in India when booked through accredited medical networks. Major providers use trained phlebotomists and temperature-controlled transport to keep specimens stable. Quality is guaranteed by laboratories holding NABL or JCI accreditation. This clarifies that results meet international diagnostic standards.

  • Accredited labs: Leading facilities like Manipal Hospitals and Global Hospital Chennai hold NABL accreditation.
  • Specimen safety: Technicians use sterile equipment and secure packaging to prevent sample contamination.
  • Network reach: Manipal Hospitals' network serves 2,000,000 patients annually with standardised lab protocols.
  • Quality oversight: Apollo Hospital Indraprastha operates one of the largest diagnostic laboratories in South Asia.

Bookimed Expert Insight: India's largest medical networks often have reliable logistics because they process many patients. For example, Manipal Hospitals manages a 15-hospital network with NABL-accredited labs. This scale helps them maintain strict cold-chain transport for samples. Patients should choose these large multi-specialty groups for the most consistent digital reporting.

Patient Consensus: Patients find these services convenient. They work well for those who prefer avoiding hospital travel. The consensus is that results from major Indian diagnostic centres are accurate. They are also delivered promptly via secure digital formats.

What is the typical timeframe for receiving MRI and CT scan results in India?

CT scans in India typically deliver results within 2 to 24 hours at private facilities. MRI reports generally take 24 to 48 hours. JCI-accredited hospitals and private diagnostic centres often provide same-day reporting for routine studies. Complex cases needing specialist radiologist review may take up to 3 days.

  • CT timeframe: Routine scans often provide written reports within 2 to 24 hours.
  • MRI timeframe: Detailed MRI reporting usually takes 24 to 48 hours for routine cases.
  • Urgent cases: Inpatient and emergency scans often deliver results within 1 to 2 hours.
  • Public facilities: Large public hospitals may have shorter reporting windows but longer queues.

Bookimed Expert Insight: India’s top medical networks, like Manipal Hospitals and Apollo, operate NABL-accredited labs. These facilities use electronic health records to share digital images almost instantly. Patients can often access scans via a secure portal before the report is finalised. This speed helps international patients with tight travel schedules.

Patient Consensus: Patients in India frequently receive imaging results on a CD or USB for easy transport. They note that private centres usually offer same-day reporting. Radiologists are often available to explain findings.

What are the standard diagnostic tests typically required before commencing treatment in India?

Standard diagnostics in India focus on baseline health assessments for patient safety before treatment. Most clinics require a complete blood count, kidney function tests, and liver function tests. Pre-operative protocols often include a 12-lead ECG, chest X-rays, and coagulation profiles. These tests identify cardiac risks or clotting issues before the procedure.

  • Blood panels: Complete blood count, electrolytes, and glucose levels check for infection or diabetes.
  • Organ function: Creatinine and bilirubin levels assess kidney and liver health before surgery.
  • Cardiac screening: 12-lead ECGs identify underlying heart issues before administering any anaesthesia.
  • Specialised imaging: MRI of one area costs $100 to $300 for precise surgical mapping.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Indian diagnostic laboratories often hold NABL accreditation. This is the local gold standard for testing accuracy. Large networks like Manipal Hospitals or Apollo Hospitals operate some of the country's specialised labs. Completing a basic check-up for $26 after arrival often avoids delays. Overseas reports might not always meet local surgical standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that workups in India are highly specific to the treating doctor. They recommend bringing all recent Australian scans and pathology reports to avoid redundant testing. Those who requested a full diagnostic list in writing before flying managed their schedules better. They also felt more prepared for the consultation.
