"This is the only clinic that has agreed to my request of having keloid steroid injection done and for that I am grateful for them all for accommodating me
This is the only clinic that has agreed to my request of having keloid steroid injection done and for that I am grateful for them all for accommodating me. There is daily changes to the keloid since the steroid injection, keloid used to be aggressive, very red, and itchy but now it’s slowly decreasing in size, not red anymore quite dark now though but I guess that’s the bruise, first time in years I haven’t felt itchy on the area. Normally, a few sessions are needed but the Doctor said maybe one is enough as it’s not a big keloid. Hoping in the next few weeks it will improve for the better. As per the staff, very few can speak English but it was not a problem for me as there was an agent allocated to look after me. Thanks again :)

I really liked the doctor, he was very welcoming and competent
I did not like the fact that different prices say, first one and then the other, at the reception a displeased girl was sitting, she was very unfriendly. When we went to the doctor, she first told us the cost was higher, and when we showed that they originally sent us a different price, she agreed to it, as if there were no fixed prices at all and they were being invented on the spot. But I really liked the doctor, he was very welcoming and competent.

Put my request to see a specialist in the early hours of the morning and the online coordinator came back to me almost immediately with options for where I could go and whom I could see
Put my request to see a specialist in the early hours of the morning and the online coordinator came back to me almost immediately with options for where I could go and whom I could see. The dermatologist was professional and took time to explain my symptoms to us and what the treatment would be. The clinic was nice, clean and looked attractive both inside and outside. The medical coordinator was very friendly and helpful and met us immediately as soon as we entered the clinic. Very satisfied with my visit to this clinic, with the coordinators and the doctor :-)

Expert Overview about Keloid scars Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the common medical treatments for keloid scars available in Turkey?

Common medical treatments for keloid scars in Turkey include corticosteroid injections and surgical excision. JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul often combine these with laser therapy or radiotherapy. These methods aim to flatten the scar tissue and prevent the keloid from regrowing.

  • Steroid injections: Specialists use corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and flatten aggressive, itchy scars.
  • Surgical excision: Surgeons remove the scar tissue, often alongside other therapies to lower recurrence.
  • Laser therapy: Clinics use CO2 or pulsed-dye lasers to shrink tissue and improve skin texture.
  • Radiation therapy: Specialists may apply radiotherapy after surgery to stop keloid cells from returning.
  • Cryotherapy: Doctors use freezing techniques to reduce scar density before or during other treatments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Turkish clinics serve over 65,000 patients annually, but keloid treatment is highly specialised. Look for hospitals like Memorial Antalya Hospital that combine plastic surgery and oncology expertise. This combination is vital when using post-surgical radiotherapy. It helps achieve the best aesthetic result without scar recurrence.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that steroid injections quickly stop the itching and redness. They note the importance of having an interpreter during appointments. This helps them understand the multi-session follow-up support required.

What is the likelihood of a keloid scar returning after treatment in Turkey?

Keloid recurrence risk in Turkey remains high at 45% to over 50% for surgery alone. Specialist clinics lower these rates by combining surgical excision with steroid injections or radiation. Success depends on using multi-modal therapy to stop the overgrowth of scar tissue.

  • Combined approach: Specialists use surgery plus steroid injections or radiotherapy to reduce recurrence risks.
  • Specialised clinics: Istanbul centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Quartz Hospital provide plastic surgery expertise.
  • Aftercare plans: Follow-up and adjuvant therapies like silicone or pressure help prevent regrowth.
  • Expert surgeons: Surgeons like Dr Naci Karacaoglan maintain standards through ISAPS and American memberships.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While single treatments start around A$4,800, the best outcomes in Turkey come from clinics providing a 12-month follow-up window. Centres like Quartz Hospital focus on long-term management. This is because keloids often attempt to regrow months after the initial procedure. High-volume hospitals treating over 250,000 patients annually often have more experience with aggressive scar types.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey note that treatment feels more like controlling the scar than a permanent cure. They emphasise that steroid injections significantly reduce itchiness and redness. However, consistent aftercare and combined therapy are essential for the best results.

How long should an Australian traveller expect to stay in Turkey for keloid scar treatment?

Australian travellers should plan to stay in Turkey for 7 to 10 days for keloid scar treatment. This timeframe allows for initial consultations, surgery, or steroid injections. It also allows for wound checks and stability before the long flight home.

  • Treatment duration: Simple steroid injections require 1–2 days for consultation and the procedure.
  • Surgical stay: Complex surgical removals often require 7–10 days for essential post-operative reviews.
  • Staged care: Some treatments require multiple sessions. Patients should confirm follow-up schedules.
  • Clinic options: Major centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Anadolu Medical Center provide JCI-accredited care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many centres specialise in surgery, but Quartz Hospital in Istanbul explicitly caters to Australian patients. This clinic serves approximately 6,500 people annually and understands the needs of those travelling from Oceania. Choosing a facility experienced with Australians often means better coordination for the journey home.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that steroid injections provide relief from itching and redness. They also found that a dedicated agent or interpreter helped when staff had limited English.

What side effects are associated with keloid scar treatment in Turkey?

Keloid scar treatments in Turkey carry risks like skin thinning, pigment changes, and recurrence. Steroid injections can cause spider veins or local fat loss. Laser therapy may lead to temporary blistering or crusting. Surgical excision carries a risk of the keloid returning larger without follow-up care.

  • Injection effects: Steroid treatments may cause skin thinning, spider veins, or permanent colour changes.
  • Laser reactions: Patients may experience temporary blistering, crusting, or lightening of the skin.
  • Surgical recurrence: Removing keloids surgically often requires follow-up radiation to prevent the scar returning.
  • Cryotherapy risks: Freezing smaller keloids can cause local pain, swelling, and permanent loss of pigment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often combine therapies to improve results. For example, Anadolu Medical Center provides interventional oncology expertise. This skill set can apply to complex keloid radiation. Using steroid injections alongside surgery reduces recurrence. This multi-stage approach works better than single laser sessions for large scars.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that steroid injections effectively stop itching and redness in aggressive keloids. They appreciate that specialists at Memorial Şişli Hospital provide detailed follow-up support to monitor healing.

How soon will I see results after keloid scar treatment in Turkey?

Patients typically see significant scar flattening within three to six months after keloid treatment in Turkey. Initial changes like reduced itching and redness often appear within weeks. Results for larger scars require multiple sessions, usually spaced four weeks apart. This approach helps achieve permanent flattening and prevents recurrence.

  • Injected corticosteroids: Small keloids often flatten after monthly injections over six months.
  • Laser therapy: Larger scars usually require several sessions with gradual fading over time.
  • Surgical removal: Surgeons remove the mass immediately, but final results take months.
  • Cryotherapy results: Freezing small keloids may require repeat treatments for visible reduction.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists often combine surgical removal with immediate corticosteroid injections to lower recurrence risk. This dual approach is common at JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital. Patients with aggressive keloids should plan for at least two follow-up visits to monitor skin stability.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that itching and redness disappear first, though scars may darken before fading. Many appreciate the comprehensive follow-up care provided by English-speaking coordinators in Istanbul clinics.

Why is Turkey considered a suitable destination for keloid scar treatment?

Turkey is a leading destination for keloid scar treatment. It combines radiotherapy with specialised plastic surgery. Clinics in Istanbul use brachytherapy or steroid injections alongside surgery to prevent recurrence. JCI-accredited facilities offer these multidisciplinary approaches at lower costs than Australian private clinics.

  • Radiotherapy: Specialists apply low-dose brachytherapy within 8 hours of surgery to stop scar regrowth.
  • Combination therapies: Surgeons use surgical excision plus steroid injections or laser sessions for better skin texture.
  • Expert specialists: Surgeons like Dr Naci Karacaoglan at Medipol Mega have over 30 years of experience.
  • International standards: Major centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital hold JCI accreditation for safety and quality care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The real value in Turkey lies in clinical volume. Hospitals like Anadolu Medical Center or Hisar Intercontinental serve over 65,000 to 250,000 patients annually. This massive case volume means doctors see complex keloids daily. They often use specific protocols that are harder to find in smaller Australian clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the service professional and appreciate having an agent to help with translation. They note that even aggressive, itchy keloids often show immediate improvement in size and colour after targeted treatment.
