It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was incredibly positive. From the moment I reached out, my coordinator Olya provided exceptional support, always available and guiding me through every step. The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. Bookimed’s team made me feel confident in my decision, and their constant communication gave me peace of mind throughout the treatment journey. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

I was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were
I had lens replacement and cataract surgery and was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were. It was followed up by Bookimed a week later since Id returned home. They even refunded me some of my original payment even though I hadn't requested it as they found an error on the calculations. I know it's concerning to travel and have operations but from my experience you truly have nothing to worry about. I will definitely look at further surgery via this company and hospital.

Vision diagnostics for 120 €, which can be done free of charge in almost any optician. The offered price for the operation is 2 times higher than the price in February. The feeling that everyone needs to sell treatment and as expensive as possible.

Expert Overview about Cataract Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the typical recovery timeline for cataract surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically notice improved vision within 24 to 72 hours after cataract surgery in Turkey. Most return to light activities after 1 week. Full healing and visual stability generally take 4 to 6 weeks. Specialists often clear international patients for flights home 5 to 7 days after the procedure.

  • Visual improvement: Many patients report clearer sight within 1 to 3 days after surgery.
  • Daily activities: Desk work is usually safe after 1 week. Avoid physical labour for longer.
  • Healing period: Eyes generally heal fully and achieve stable vision within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Post-operative checks: Clinics like Dunyagoz Istanbul Etiler often perform follow-ups 24 hours after treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume specialists like Dr Baha Toygar and Prof. Dr Ahmet Satici have handled 20,000+ to 30,000+ cases each. Data shows these experienced Turkish surgeons often use trifocal or EDOF lenses, such as Alcon PanOptix. These lens choices can significantly influence how quickly a patient adapts to various distances during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report rapid visual results. They note that vision continues to settle for several weeks. Many emphasise the importance of confirming English-speaking nursing staff. They also recommend getting clear written eye-drop schedules before flying home.

How long must I stay in Turkey after having cataract surgery?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 3 to 7 days after cataract surgery. This timeframe allows for the procedure and essential follow-up checks. Surgeons typically perform the operation as a day procedure. Initial reviews occur within 24 to 48 hours to confirm lens positioning.

  • Hospital stay: Most centres perform this as day surgery with no overnight stay required.
  • Initial checkup: Surgeons typically schedule the first post-operative review for the following day.
  • Travel clearance: Doctors usually advise waiting 5 to 7 days before flying home.
  • Bilateral surgery: Treating both eyes may extend the trip to ensure stable healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages often cover just the surgery, all-inclusive options like those at Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital provide a 3-day hotel stay. This covers the critical first 72 hours when the most important follow-up checks occur. Choosing a package with accommodation included keeps patients near their specialist during the initial recovery window.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the trip feels more like a quick medical visit than a long holiday. They suggest staying until the first review is finished for peace of mind before the flight back to Australia.

What types of intraocular lenses are available for cataract surgery in Turkey?

Turkish clinics offer several intraocular lenses (IOLs). These include monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, and Toric options to correct astigmatism. Leading centres use premium brands like Alcon PanOptix, TECNIS PurSee, and German Liberty. Specialised Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses and laser-assisted implantation are also widely available.

  • Monofocal lenses: Standard option for clear distance vision. Patients usually still need glasses for reading.
  • Trifocal lenses: Premium smart lenses, such as Alcon PanOptix, provide clear vision at three distances.
  • Toric lenses: Customised implants designed to correct astigmatism during cataract removal.
  • EDOF lenses: These offer a continuous range of vision without distinct focal gaps.
  • Brand variety: Clinics use international brands including RAYNER, TECNIS, and Alcon for reliable surgical outcomes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Australian clinics focus on one lens brand. However, Turkish surgeons like Prof. Dr Ahmet Satici often offer Alcon, TECNIS, and RAYNER within one practice. This variety allows patients to select lenses based on their personal lifestyle needs.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often impressed by premium lens options in Turkey not yet available at home. Many mention the relief of seeing clearly again. They also value the professional and helpful hospital staff during their stay.

Are both eyes treated on the same day during cataract surgery in Turkey?

Turkish clinics typically perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. This allows the first eye to heal before proceeding. Some specialists offer same-day bilateral surgery for international patients. However, most wait 1 to 3 weeks between procedures for stable vision results.

  • Staged approach: Surgeons monitor the first eye's healing before treating the second.
  • Clinical protocols: Doctors like Prof. Ahmet Satici use phacoemulsification for precise outcomes.
  • Specific timing: The gap depends on eye health and the surgeon's recommendation.
  • Package inclusion: Many A$2,800 to A$4,100 packages specifically cover surgery for one eye.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics quote for one eye, specialists like Dr Baha Toygar at Dunyagoz Etiler have treated 30,000+ cases. Surgeons with this volume often handle complex bilateral requests more efficiently. Patients should check if their A$3,000+ package includes the specific trifocal lenses they require. IOL types significantly affect the total cost.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the professionalism of Turkish staff. They appreciate getting lens types not yet available in other countries. Travel plans should include a week of follow-up care. This helps the first eye settle before flying home.

Is femtosecond laser-assisted surgery an option for cataracts in Turkey?

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is a standard option in Turkey. Major clinics use this technology to create precise corneal incisions. They also use it to fragment the lens before removal. It improves surgical accuracy and reduces recovery times compared to manual blade techniques.

  • Expert specialists: Dr Huseyin Aslankara and Dr Ertan Sunay specialise in femtosecond laser applications.
  • Laser capabilities: Surgeons use systems like IntraLase for computer-controlled capsulotomy and lens fragmentation.
  • Premium lenses: Packages often include Alcon PanOptix or TECNIS trifocal lenses alongside laser procedures.
  • Accredited facilities: JCI-accredited hospitals such as Lokman Hekim Istanbul offer these surgical suites.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Turkish packages are listed as laser-assisted. Patients should confirm if the price includes lens fragmentation. High-volume surgeons like Dr Ahmet Satici have handled 20,000+ cases. They often combine laser precision with premium EDOF or trifocal lenses.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the surgery is quick and painless. Most feel comfortable enough for same-day discharge. Those travelling to Turkey suggest clarifying the billing method early. Some hospital departments prefer cash payments over credit cards.

Can I combine cataract surgery in Turkey with a holiday?

Patients can combine cataract surgery in Turkey with a holiday. Modern phacoemulsification techniques allow for same-day discharge. Specialists recommend completing active sightseeing and swimming before surgery. The days following the 15–30 minute procedure require rest. Vision typically clears within 3 to 7 days.

  • Clinic locations: Major centres in Istanbul and Antalya allow patients to recover near cultural sites.
  • Typical stay: Most packages recommend 4–7 days for preoperative tests and follow-up checks.
  • Activity restrictions: Patients must avoid swimming, dust, and strenuous exercise immediately after the operation.
  • All-inclusive options: Packages often include 3–5 nights in 4 or 5-star hotels and VIP transfers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye clinics often use premium lenses not yet available in other regions. For example, Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer offers specific German Liberty and Alcon PanOptix trifocal options. These specialised implants can correct near, intermediate, and distance vision simultaneously. This may eliminate the need for glasses after the holiday.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that vision can be blurry and sensitive to light initially. They suggest doing major sightseeing first. The post-op period in Turkey is best for low-key relaxation and strictly following the eye-drop schedule.

What is generally included in cataract surgery packages offered in Turkey?

Turkish cataract surgery packages bundle surgical fees, hospital costs, and intraocular lenses (IOLs) with travel logistics. Most plans include pre-operative assessments, local anaesthesia, and follow-up care. Australian patients often access premium multifocal or trifocal lenses not always available through Medicare. These packages also include VIP airport-to-hotel transfers.

  • Surgical expertise: Surgeons like Prof. Dr Ahmet Satici have performed over 20,000 procedures.
  • Specialised diagnostics: Clinics use OCT and corneal topography for precise lens fitting.
  • Global standards: Hospitals like Memorial Sisli hold JCI accreditation for clinical safety.
  • Lens options: Packages offer premium brands including Alcon PanOptix and Rayner trifocal lenses.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Australian clinics have long waiting lists for non-urgent cataract surgery. However, Turkish eye hospitals, such as Dunyagoz, treat up to 66,000 patients annually. This massive volume allows surgeons like Dr Baha Toygar to perform 30,000+ operations. This often results in refined techniques and access to the latest trifocal lens technology.

Patient Consensus: Patients appreciate that medical staff are eager to assist. They emphasise the value of getting premium lenses that were not yet available at home.

How long does the cataract surgery procedure take in a Turkish clinic?

Cataract surgery in Turkey typically takes 15 to 20 minutes per eye. Specialist surgeons use phacoemulsification to replace the cloudy lens with an artificial one. Patients usually spend 3 hours at the clinic for preparation and monitoring. This is an outpatient procedure.

  • Surgical duration: The active surgical phase often takes less than 15 minutes.
  • Clinical stay: Patients spend 2 to 3 hours on-site for tests and recovery.
  • Effective techniques: Small-incision methods allow for fast healing without surgical sutures.
  • Specialist throughput: High-volume clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital treat 66,000+ patients every year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists are highly efficient due to high procedural volume. For example, Prof Dr Ahmet Satici and Dr Haluk Talu have each performed over 20,000 surgeries. This experience often reduces the active surgical time to approximately 10 minutes. Patients with complex needs benefit from this speed, as it minimises time under local anaesthesia.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe the operation as remarkably quick and painless. They note that the clinical staff are professional and helpful throughout the process. It is important to confirm if the booking includes same-day surgery or separate consultation days.

Are there activity limitations following cataract surgery in Turkey?

Patients must avoid bending, heavy lifting over 7 kg, and strenuous exercise for 1 week after cataract surgery in Turkey. Surgeons advise skipping swimming and hot tubs for 4 weeks to prevent infection. Full recovery allows a return to most normal activities within 1 month.

  • Physical exertion: Avoid gym sessions, running, and heavy housework for at least 7 days.
  • Water safety: Keep soap and tap water out of eyes for 2 weeks minimum.
  • Eye protection: Wear provided shields during sleep for 1 week to prevent accidental rubbing.
  • Travel timing: Most Turkish specialists clear patients to fly home 2–3 days after surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye centres like Dunyagoz and Veni Vidi handle high volumes. Surgeons like Dr Baha Toygar have performed 30,000+ procedures. This high frequency means clinics have streamlined recovery protocols for international travellers. Some packages at Lokman Hekim include 3 hotel nights. This helps patients stay near their surgeon for critical 48-hour follow-up checks.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the recovery is painless. They emphasise following the eye-drop schedule strictly. Many recommend confirming your flight window with the clinic early. Several days of low-key rest in Turkey are usually necessary before departure.
