I can't recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances
I highly recommend Florence Nightingale Hospital to anyone that is about to undergo a medical journey. For us, everything happened so suddenly. From the moment we uploaded files and made our request on Bookimed, Aliser as the International Coordinator was immediately on hand to support us - incredibly attentively and with compassion. He was supportive to our needs, and at a moment’s notice jumped onto WhatsApp calls to answer any questions and went above and beyond to give us the information we needed. We were navigating significant timezone issues (based in Hong Kong, whereas the patient, father-in-law, was in Albania) but we didn’t feel this burden. We had lots of specific needs that were met, including jumping onto a Video call with Professor Yildiray Yuzer, to answer questions directly. We weren’t the easiest of patients with lots of reassurance needed, but Aliser was helpful in being able to put himself in the position of the patient and being on our side to help us. We were incredibly satisfied by the level of support that we received - especially in comparison to other hospitals in Istanbul. I can’t recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances. Once we arrived in Istanbul we appreciated being met with a transfer, and recommendations were made for accommodation to ensure that we were comfortable. Throughout our consultations, we most definitely felt that the Florence team was earnest - putting patient health first, above profit, which we appreciated. During the hospital stay itself, we were also blown away by the compassion of the nurses and support staff in our ward. Something that was so challenging, was punctuated throughout with so many moments of warmth and support. In addition, the facilities, hospital rooms, and cleanliness and hygiene at Florence were fantastic, we couldn’t have wished for a better stay. Most importantly, we were reassured by the experience and expertise of Professor Yuzer and his team. Any patient can trust that they are in expert hands. It’s also helpful to see that these skills are supported by a genuine empathy for the patient. Ultimately, the procedure was a success (we hope that positive health outcome continues!). It feels surreal having embarked on the journey, however, I’m incredibly satisfied with the service, support and expertise of the hospital. There’s nothing I can think of to improve!
About Bookimed service
The bookimed team, in addition to Florence, were incredibly supportive and compassionate particularly in the first weeks as we sought to navigate options and make decisions. The customer support team regularly checked in on our progress via whatsapp, and you could see that they had medical backgrounds and were incredibly competent. It felt fantastic to have their support - bookimed is an incredible platform.

FAQ about Transplantology in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Does the hospital arrange accommodation and transportation for organ transplant patients in Turkey?

Major Turkish hospitals specialising in organ transplantation provide logistics support for international patients. Facilities like Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital offer free airport transfers and personal coordinators. Others provide accommodation recommendations and arrival transfers. These help manage the hotel-to-hospital routine for patients and companions.

  • Coordinated transfers: Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital provides free transport and a personal coordinator.
  • Arrival support: Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital offers transfer services and local accommodation help.
  • International departments: Dedicated teams at JCI-accredited clinics manage travel and lodging logistics.
  • Proximity options: Many hospitals specialise in nearby hotel bookings for donor-recipient pairs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While hair transplant packages almost always bundle 5-star hotels, transplantology logistics are handled differently. Major centres like Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital focus on proximity, often placing patients within 5 minutes of the clinic. This provides immediate access for post-operative monitoring or emergency care after complex procedures.

Patient Consensus: Upon arrival in Turkey, patients from Australia and the UK are met with a transfer. They note this makes the journey far less stressful. They highly value having an international coordinator. The coordinator helps navigate accommodation needs and bridge communication gaps during their hospital stay.

Do I need to translate my medical documents for an organ transplant in Turkey?

Most Australian patients need translated medical documents for an organ transplant in Turkey. Major centres like Medipol Mega University Hospital have international departments. However, legal protocols for living donors often require sworn Turkish translations. Professionals must translate diagnostic reports and donor eligibility to satisfy Turkish health regulations.

  • Essential documents: Translate recent medical summaries, HLA-typing results, and hospital discharge reports.
  • Legal requirement: Living donor cases often require sworn translations certified by a Turkish notary.
  • Donation protocols: Critical history prevents forensic organ retention issues under Turkish post-mortem laws.
  • Clinical accuracy: Translated files help surgeons at JCI-accredited facilities accurately assess transplant eligibility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high transplant volumes, like Istinye University Liv Hospital, report success. This success comes when patients provide pre-translated HLA-typing and DNA tests. This preparation allows their specialised team to confirm donor compatibility before the patient leaves Australia. The team has completed 5,000+ kidney transplants.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that having professional Turkish translations prevents communication gaps during brief surgeon consultations. Australian families brought their own translated records. They found that this made a big difference. Navigating legal consent and hospital protocols in Istanbul became much smoother.

Are the surgeons in Turkey qualified for transplant surgery?

Surgeons in Turkey are highly qualified in transplantology. They manage over 5,000 kidney and 1,000 liver transplants at major centres. Many lead university departments and hold memberships in the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Specialist clinics maintain JCI accreditation, mirroring standards found in top-tier Australian hospitals.

  • Specialist volume: Prof. Dr Ayhan Dinckan has performed 5,000+ kidney and 1,000+ liver transplants.
  • Global training: Prof. Dr Kamil Yalcin Polat trained at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital.
  • Technical precision: Teams use the Da Vinci Surgical System for minimally invasive donor surgery.
  • Accreditation level: VM Medical Park Florya and Medipol Mega hold JCI gold seal certification.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish transplant centres often lead in donor-matching because they handle a high volume of complex combined cases. For instance, Prof. Dr Ayhan Dinckan works at Istinye University. He has managed over 350 paediatric kidney transplants. This volume allows teams to perfect specific techniques, such as laparoscopic live donor removal. This technique is standard in Istanbul but less frequent in smaller regional hospitals.

Patient consensus: Turkish transplant teams provide thorough, comprehensible explanations. Patients from Australia and the UK note this. They often highlight the genuine empathy shown by professors. They also note the spotless cleanliness of the facilities during recovery.

How safe and successful are transplant surgeries in Turkey?

Transplant surgeries in Turkey report high success rates. Some leading centres achieve 99% for kidney transplants. Safety is maintained through rigorous JCI and ISO accreditations. The use of robotic systems also contributes. Specialists in Istanbul and Ankara perform thousands of complex organ and corneal procedures annually.

  • Success rates: Memorial Bahçelievler reports 99% success for kidney and 93.5% for liver transplants.
  • Clinical volume: Istinye University Hospital teams have completed over 5,000 kidney transplants. They have also performed over 1,000 liver transplants.
  • Technology: Surgeons use the Da Vinci robotic system at Medipol Mega. This helps with precise donor matching.
  • Expert credentials: Prof. Dr Ayhan Dinckan has personally performed over 350 paediatric kidney transplant cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish transplant centres often lead in live-donor surgeries. This is because they use laparoscopic techniques for kidney removal. This minimally invasive approach is used by experts like Dr Alp Gürkan. It significantly speeds up donor recovery. Donors return to normal activities much faster than with traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients from Australia and the UK often praise the care in Istanbul facilities. They find it professional and compassionate. Surgeons spend a lot of time explaining every detail. This helps families feel supported during recovery in Turkey.

How do Turkish transplant clinics handle medical emergencies during surgery?

Turkish transplant centres manage surgical emergencies with integrated intensive care units (ICU) and rapid response teams. These are located within the theatre complex. Facilities like Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital use heliports for air ambulance transfers. They also use laminar airflow systems to maintain sterile surgical environments.

  • Hospital-grade infrastructure: Major centres house 80+ ICU beds for cardiovascular, neonatal, and general emergency support.
  • Specialist-led teams: Professors like Dr Murat Dayangac oversee procedures. So surgeons, not just technicians, manage critical stages.
  • Emergency logistics: Specific hospitals feature helipads. These facilitate rapid patient transfers during life-critical events or complications.
  • Regulatory oversight: Article 10 mandates sterile techniques and emergency preparedness. This applies to all invasive surgical procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many choose clinics for price, safety often depends on hospital affiliation. Large complexes like Medipol Mega University Hospital serve 1,200 patients daily. They also maintain 24/7 cardiac and ICU teams. These multi-specialty environments handle rare intra-operative events better than standalone private clinics. They keep all specialists and life-support technology in-house.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find that choosing JCI-accredited hospitals provides peace of mind. They note that skilled doctors and translators are very accommodating. They answer concerns swiftly and maintain top-notch, clean facilities throughout the transplant journey.

Do I need to bring a donor for an organ transplant in Turkey?

International patients must bring a living donor for organ transplants. This is because Turkish law restricts deceased donor lists to citizens. Eligible donors must be a spouse or blood relative up to the fourth degree. All cases undergo rigorous ethical committee review to confirm there is no financial exchange.

  • Relative eligibility: Donors should be family members. Eligible relatives include parents, children, siblings, and cousins up to the fourth degree.
  • Legal requirements: A spouse or relative must provide notarised proof of relationship and identity documents.
  • Ethical vetting: The committee interviews donors. It confirms they understand the risks and are acting voluntarily.
  • Success rates: Memorial Healthcare Group reports a 99% success rate for kidney transplants. It also reports a 93.5% success rate for liver transplants.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish law prioritises relatives. Still, clinics like Memorial Bahçelievler often use robotic Da Vinci systems for donor surgery. This technology allows surgeons to remove the donor organ through tiny incisions. This usually means the donor recovers faster. They also face less pain than with traditional surgery. It is a major reason why families choose these centres for living donor procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the medical teams professional. They appreciate when surgeons like Dr Polat give thorough explanations. Having family members as donors reduces paperwork significantly. That said, staying for one month after surgery is standard for stability.

Why choose Turkey for transplant surgery?

Turkey is a leading global hub for complex transplant surgery. It offers high survival rates and surgical technology. JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul and Ankara provide access to specialists. These specialists have performed thousands of successful liver, kidney, and corneal transplants.

  • Surgical volume: The organ transplant team at Istinye University Liv Hospital has completed 5,000+ kidney transplants.
  • Clinical outcomes: Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital reports a 99% success rate for kidney transplant procedures.
  • Technology: Surgeons use the Da Vinci robotic system for minimally invasive live donor nephrectomy.
  • International standards: Major centres like Medipol Mega University Hospital hold JCI accreditation for safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics excel in live donor transplantation because they prioritise minimally invasive techniques. Surgeons at Istanbul Okan University Hospital performed the country’s first laparoscopic kidney removal. The kidney came from a live donor. Neuronavigation with 1 mm accuracy and robotic systems allow faster recovery and smaller scars for donors. This high-tech approach helps Turkey maintain a 91.7% donor organ acceptance rate.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the thorough, comprehensible explanations from professors. They also note the compassion shown by nursing staff throughout the recovery period. The experience is often described as professional and supportive. Many note the convenience of airport transfers and well-maintained facilities.

Do Turkish transplant clinics provide follow-up care after I return home?

Turkish transplant centres provide structured remote follow-up care for international patients. This care is delivered through digital monitoring and virtual consultations. Surgeons use video calls and photo reviews to track recovery milestones. Most JCI-accredited facilities assign a dedicated coordinator. The coordinator manages the patient’s progress from Australia for 12 to 18 months.

  • Virtual monitoring: Specialists use WhatsApp or video calls to track healing and organ function.
  • Photo reviews: Patients send regular progress photos for surgeons to assess graft or site health.
  • Initial check-up: Clinics perform essential post-operative cleaning and education before patients fly home.
  • Expert feedback: Coordinators arrange direct surgeon reviews if patients have specific concerns during recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume university hospitals like Medipol Mega or Memorial Bahçelievler often have success rates exceeding 90%. They use in-house labs for same-day results. This speed is vital for international patients. They can complete HLA-typing and initial post-op screenings faster. This leaves more time for detailed aftercare training before patients return home.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the coordinators are incredibly attentive and compassionate. They often jump onto calls at a moment’s notice to answer questions. They managed timezone issues from Australia. They felt supported by the skilled medical teams and thorough explanations. This support was especially helpful during the beginning of their recovery period.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a transplant?

Stays in Turkey range from 3 days for hair restoration. For major organ transplants, they can reach 30 days. Hair procedures require a minimum 3-day window for surgery and follow-up. Kidney or liver transplants at JCI-accredited centres require a 4-week stay for donor matching and monitoring.

  • Hair restoration window: Includes 1 surgery day and 1–2 days for clinical hair washing.
  • Organ transplant duration: Patients typically stay 20–30 days for intensive post-operative medical monitoring.
  • Liver transplant monitoring: Major centres such as Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital report 93.5% group success rates.
  • Corneal transplant recovery: Requires about 7–10 days for initial healing and essential follow-up checks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high international volumes often provide dedicated translators and on-site accommodation. Medipol Mega University Hospital, for instance, treats 1,000,000 patients annually. These integrated facilities mean patients spend less time travelling between hotels and theatres. This often shortens the total stay by 2–3 days for complex procedures.

Patient Consensus: Visitors note that 3 days works for hair surgery. However, staying 5 days in Turkey helps manage facial swelling comfortably. For major surgery, patients appreciated having transfers and translators handle logistics. This allowed them to focus entirely on recovery.
