Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in Thailand typically costs from AUD $7,864 / ฿A267,381 to AUD $12,154 / ฿A413,226. Final pricing depends on graft selection, clinic tier, and whether you require additional meniscus repair. Expenses usually cover surgical fees, anaesthetic, a private hospital stay, and initial post-operative physiotherapy sessions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand offers unique value through specialised centres like KDMS Specialized Orthopedic Hospital, which focuses exclusively on musculoskeletal health. For Australians, choosing JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad or Sikarin ensures quality audited against international standards. Some specialists, including Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn, even hold Australian clinical training certificates. This blend of specialist focus and familiar medical backgrounds provides high-level reassurance for complex orthopedic recoveries abroad.

I was very satisfied with my experience
I had knee surgery at this hospital and was very satisfied with my experience. The staff were professional and attentive, and the doctors were highly qualified. The cost of treatment was also reasonable. The hospital room was comfortable and had everything necessary, including a sofa for an accompanying person. I would like to thank the hospital staff for the high-quality treatment and the company Bookimed for their assistance in helping me find a hospital for the surgery.

I am healing faster than I expected, and I am back to my computer, and piano based work 10 days later
Menness clinic is very professional, and I highly recommend them for carpal tunnel release. I had a bilateral open release done by Dr. Big, the orthopedic surgeon on staff at Menness clinic. I was nervous going in because my CTS was severe and I have cerebral palsy. I was pleased to learn that Dr. Big had performed surgery on people with CP previously, and knew exactly what to expect, and how to operate on me to get the best outcome possible. I am healing faster than I expected, and I am back to my computer, and piano based work 10 days later.

FAQ about Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What does the post-operative rehabilitation process look like?

ACL reconstruction rehabilitation in Thailand follows a structured, milestone-based program focused on joint stability and muscle restoration. The process advances through five phases, moving from initial protection and swelling management to intensive strengthening and sport-specific drills over 6-9 months.

  • Phase 1 protection: Focuses on managing swelling and regaining knee extension during weeks 0–2.
  • Range of motion: Introduces stretches and light muscle activation from weeks 2–6 to prevent stiffness.
  • Strength building: Uses progressive resistance and balance training from weeks 6–12 to rebuild muscle.
  • Functional drills: Incorporates light running and task-related movements between months 3 and 6.
  • Return to activity: Finalises power and pivoting exercises after month 6 once strength matches the healthy limb.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeons in Bangkok often have international training. Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn at Intrarat Hospital completed clinical training in Melbourne, Australia. This means the rehab protocols provided in Thailand align closely with Australian physiotherapy standards. This makes your transition back to local care much smoother.

Patient Consensus: Focus on small milestones like regaining extension and managing early swelling with ice and elevation. Carry your graft details and written protocol home so your Australian physiotherapist can safely guide your final recovery stages.

What surgical techniques and graft options do Thai surgeons use?

Thai orthopaedic surgeons specialise in arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using advanced single-bundle and double-bundle techniques. Most procedures involve minimally invasive approaches to reduce scarring and speed up recovery. Surgeons typically use autografts from the hamstring, patellar, or quadriceps tendons to ensure long-term stability.

  • Arthroscopic surgery: Surgeons use small incisions and cameras to repair the ligament with minimal trauma.
  • Graft selection: Surgeons commonly use hamstring or patellar tendon autografts based on the patient's activity level.
  • Double-bundle technique: This advanced approach restores both ACL strands to mimic natural knee rotation and stability.
  • Concurrent repairs: Specialists often perform meniscus or cartilage repair during the same session if needed.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai surgeons frequently complete elite training in Australia and the USA. Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn at Intrarat Hospital trained at SureCell Melbourne. This cross-border expertise ensures Australian patients receive care matching the clinical standards they expect back home.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend choosing surgeons who perform high volumes of reconstructions regularly. Confirming graft types and securing a detailed rehabilitation plan before flying home ensures a smoother recovery.

How long should I plan to stay in Thailand for the procedure?

Plan for a 14 to 21 day stay in Thailand for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This timeframe allows for essential pre-operative assessments, arthroscopic surgery, initial physical therapy, and a mandatory recovery window to reduce deep vein thrombosis risks before a long-haul flight back to Australia.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 2–3 nights in a facility like KDMS Specialized Orthopedic Hospital.
  • Clinical review: Surgeons require a follow-up appointment 7–10 days after surgery.
  • Pre-op phase: Allow 1–2 days for blood tests and physical examinations upon arrival.
  • Mobility window: Recovery time in Thailand ensures the surgical site stabilises for travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand’s leading facilities, such as the JCI-accredited Bumrungrad International Hospital, often integrate advanced rehab into the stay. Choosing specialised orthopedic centres over general hospitals helps patients begin physiotherapy within 24 hours of surgery. This early movement is critical for managing swelling before the flight home.

Patient Consensus: Plan for a longer trip than originally expected to avoid rushing the recovery process. Ensure accommodation is crutch-friendly and located near the hospital for easier post-operative follow-up appointments in Bangkok.

Which are the best hospitals for ACL reconstruction in Thailand?

Thailand's leading hospitals for ACL reconstruction are Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities in Bangkok and Pattaya. These centres specialise in arthroscopic techniques, often saving patients 75% compared to Australian costs. Key institutions include multi-specialty hubs like Bumrungrad and dedicated orthopaedic facilities like KDMS Specialized Orthopedic Hospital.

  • Sikarin Hospital: Frequently chosen by Australians for orthopaedics and Joint Commission International accredited care.
  • Bumrungrad International: Ranks among the world's top 10 hospitals with high-precision digital imaging.
  • KDMS Hospital: Thailand's first specialist facility dedicated exclusively to bone and joint conditions.
  • Specialised surgery: Surgeons like Dr Thongchai Theerajumyaporn have clinical training from Melbourne institutions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While large multi-specialty hospitals are famous, smaller boutique clinics like LUX KOR specialize heavily in joint procedures. These smaller centres often provide more personalized coordination for the critical first two weeks of recovery. This is useful for Australians who need clear, itemized paperwork for their healthcare providers back home.

Patient Consensus: Selecting a surgeon with high annual procedural volume matters more than the hospital brand. Australians find that organizing a local physiotherapy plan before leaving Thailand ensures a smoother transition for long-term recovery.
