The biggest disappointment was the clinic itself. I have no complaints about the doctor or the staff; they were professional and attentive. However, the conditions of my stay were simply awful, and this, unfortunately, completely overshadowed all the positive impressions I had of the medical staff’s work. It’s very disappointing. No matter how good the doctor is, the environment you find yourself in plays a huge role in the whole process. Ultimately, despite the team’s competence, I cannot give a high overall rating due to the state of the clinic, which made the whole experience extremely negative.

FAQ about Obstetrics and Gynecology in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are obstetricians and gynaecologists at leading hospitals in Thailand professionally qualified and fluent in English?

Obstetricians and gynaecologists at leading Thai hospitals are highly qualified. They frequently hold international certifications and British or American fellowships. Specialists at major Bangkok centres commonly speak fluent English. Many clinicians hold dual Thai and UK medical licences or train at institutions like Mahidol University.

  • International credentials: Doctors often hold fellowships from UK or Singaporean institutions for specialised surgical training.
  • Specific languages: Several specialists like Dr Waranya Sirithanasarn and Dr Nivit Karla speak fluent English.
  • Hospital standards: Leading facilities such as Bumrungrad and Prime Fertility Clinic maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Regional recognition: Specialists frequently present at global events, including the Fertility Society of Australia Annual Conference.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai medical training is rigorous. Top specialists often complete second degrees abroad in niche fields like prenatal genetics. For example, Associate Professor Phattaraphum Phophong holds an M.Sc. from University College London. Patients should look for 'Diploma of the Thai Subboard' credentials. This indicates specialised expertise beyond general gynaecology.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while hospitals advertise English support, they should confirm the specialist can explain procedures directly. They suggest getting written treatment plans in English before travel. This helps ensure clear consent for surgery or fertility care.

Are gynaecologists in Thailand experienced in performing robotic-assisted surgical procedures for fibroids?

Gynaecologists in Thailand are highly experienced in performing robotic-assisted myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids. Specialist centres in Bangkok use the da Vinci Xi system. These robotic platforms allow surgeons to remove complex fibroids through tiny incisions. This helps preserve the uterus and healthy tissue.

  • Technological precision: Specialised units at Bumrungrad International Hospital use robotic systems for complex pelvic surgery.
  • Senior expertise: Dr Seree Teerapong at Intrarat Hospital holds certification in laparoscopic and reproductive surgery.
  • Clinical volume: Intrarat Hospital treats 100,000 patients annually and houses over 200 experienced physicians.
  • International standards: Major hospitals like Bumrungrad International Hospital carry JCI and GHA accreditations for surgical safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many gynaecologists perform fibroid surgery. However, patients should look for those with sub-board diplomas in reproductive medicine. Doctors like Assoc. Prof. Phattaraphum Phophong combine surgical skill with fertility expertise. This focus helps preserve the ability to conceive after the fibroids are removed.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to ask about specific surgical volumes. They suggest confirming the exact robotic platform used. They also recommend requesting recovery timelines for your specific case in Thailand.

Can I obtain a professional second opinion for endometriosis management from a specialist in Thailand?

Australian patients can obtain professional second opinions for endometriosis in Thailand. Specialists at JCI-accredited facilities such as Prime Fertility Clinic and Bumrungrad International Hospital provide expert reviews. Consultations include diagnostic assessments and personalised treatment plans. These plans cover complex laparoscopic or hysteroscopic conservative surgeries.

  • Expert practitioners: Specialists like Dr Poonkiat Punyamitr hold international certifications in reproductive medicine.
  • Specialised diagnostics: Clinics offer ultrasound, biopsy, and hysteroscopy to confirm deep-infiltrating endometriosis.
  • Clinical pathways: Experts provide written management plans covering medical therapy or surgical excision.
  • Quality standards: Prime Fertility Clinic holds JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation, a major quality signal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai specialists often combine gynaecology with specialised fertility training. Dr Tanut Jerachotechueantaveechai at Bangkok Center Clinic participated in the Fertility Society of Australia Annual Conference. This shared clinical understanding helps Australian patients integrate Thai second opinions with their local GP's care plan.

Patient Consensus: Patients find second opinions most effective when they upload imaging and operative notes early. They value specialists who explain surgical excision techniques and fertility impacts in clear English. This helps them coordinate with doctors back in Australia.

What is the typical schedule for prenatal visits when receiving antenatal care in Thailand?

Antenatal care in Thailand follows a standard frequency to monitor maternal and foetal health. Routine visits occur every four weeks until the 28th week of gestation. Frequency then increases to every two to three weeks until week 32. This is followed by weekly check-ups until delivery.

  • First appointment: Occurs once pregnancy is suspected. This involves a physical exam and blood tests.
  • Gestation weeks 0–28: Appointments are scheduled monthly. This allows for regular monitoring of development.
  • Gestation weeks 28–32: Visits increase to every fortnight. Specialists track foetal growth more closely.
  • Gestation weeks 32–40: Weekly appointments start. These final checks focus on preparation for childbirth.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics often have in-house technology. Prime Fertility Clinic has JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation. Navamin 9 Hospital and Bumrungrad International Hospital also hold JCI certification. These facilities provide high-standard obstetrics care for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand find the initial consultation very thorough. They appreciate that specialists often have international training from the UK or US. Seamless support and quick diagnostic results make the frequent schedule feel manageable.

What facilities are available for labour and birth at top hospitals in Thailand?

Top hospitals in Thailand provide private birthing suites, neonatal intensive care, and 24/7 specialist teams. Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Navamin 9 Hospital offer JCI-accredited maternity care. These centres combine modern obstetric theatre technology with hotel-like amenities for family-centred births.

  • Maternity suites: Private rooms designed for comfort and family presence during labour.
  • Neonatal care: Level 4 NICU facilities available for premature or high-risk newborn support.
  • Pain management: Full access to anaesthesia and epidural blocks administered by specialist anaesthetists.
  • Advanced safety: Operating theatres meet Clean Room standards with high-quality air filtration systems.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals often separate maternity services into dedicated centres. For example, Navamin 9 Hospital has a specific mother and child centre. This approach helps patients avoid general hospital traffic. High patient volumes at major hubs like Intrarat Hospital mean clinical teams maintain sharp emergency response skills. This facility treats 100,000 patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Delivering in Thailand feels like staying in a hotel rather than a hospital. Patients often mention the helpful breastfeeding support. They also appreciate the reassurance of having specialists available at any hour.

Does the hospital assist with medical visa extensions if a longer stay is required for treatment in Thailand?

Thai hospitals assist with medical visa extensions by providing required clinical documentation. International patient departments at facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Prime Fertility Clinic issue medical reports. These documents confirm a patient's condition and the medical necessity for an extended stay. This ensures the patient can remain in Thailand for treatment.

  • Documentation support: Hospitals provide doctor letters and treatment plans for extensions.
  • Clinical justification: Reports specify why recovery or surgery requires more time.
  • Extension duration: Thai immigration often grants extensions up to 90 days.
  • Administrative assistance: International desks help prepare papers but do not visit immigration.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centres like Intrarat Hospital treat 100,000 patients annually. They have dedicated administrative teams for international paperwork. For obstetrics cases involving childbirth or surgery, request these letters early. Doing this at least 7 days before a visa expires is best. This allows the medical team to document specific follow-up needs accurately for immigration officers.

Patient Consensus: Patients note Thai hospitals provide essential medical letters. However, they do not handle the immigration application end-to-end. It is vital to confirm document timelines early. Patients should avoid waiting until discharge day to request paperwork.
