Additional information
Plasma Nucleoplasty (Coblation Therapy) for Disc Herniation
Plasma nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure used to treat contained disc herniations and chronic disc-related back or neck pain. In this technique, a specialized needle is inserted into the affected intervertebral disc under fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance). Using low-temperature plasma (coblation) technology, a small portion of the nucleus pulposus is precisely removed, reducing pressure within the disc and relieving compression on nearby nerves.
This procedure is typically recommended for patients with mild to moderate disc herniation who experience persistent pain radiating to the arms or legs and have not responded to conservative treatments such as medication or physical therapy. Plasma nucleoplasty does not require general anesthesia, is performed through a very small incision, and allows for a quick recovery.
Benefits of Plasma Nucleoplasty:
Minimally invasive with minimal tissue damage
Reduced disc pressure and nerve decompression
Short procedure time and same-day discharge
Faster return to daily activities
Lower complication risk compared to open surgery
Plasma nucleoplasty is a safe and effective option for selected patients, offering pain relief and improved function while potentially delaying or avoiding more invasive spinal surgery.
