FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which Turkish ophthalmologists have the most experience treating macular dystrophy and retinal diseases?

Turkish ophthalmologists like Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici and Prof. Peykan Türkçüoğlu lead the field in macular dystrophy care. These specialists hold prestigious academic roles and international fellowships. They provide advanced medical and surgical interventions at JCI-accredited facilities using high-resolution diagnostic imaging and regenerative support.

  • Academic leadership: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici achieved full professorship with 30+ years of clinical experience.
  • Elite training: Prof. Peykan Türkçüoğlu completed a specialized retinal fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
  • Surgical mastery: Leading specialists in Istanbul have performed over 20,000 successful eye surgeries.
  • European certification: Dr. Ertan Sunay is an active member of the European Society of Retina Specialists.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend of Turkish retinal specialists pursuing German and American clinical research. Dr. Akin Akyurt earned a PhD from Cologne University, while others maintain memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This international integration allows patients to access identical treatment protocols used in Western Europe or the US at a lower cost.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that choosing a specialist at a major teaching hospital is vital for rare genetic conditions. They value doctors who explain long-term monitoring rather than promising a simple fix. Many found traveling to Istanbul essential to access centers with advanced fundus autofluorescence and genetic testing pathways.

What advanced treatment methods do doctors in Turkey use for macular dystrophy?

Turkish ophthalmologists treat macular dystrophy using regenerative stem cell therapies and advanced photobiomodulation to slow progression. Specialists prioritize genetic testing and high-end retina workups. These protocols aim to stabilize vision in patients with Stargardt disease or macular degeneration.

  • Stem cell therapy: Doctors use mesenchymal cells to stimulate and repair damaged retinal tissue environments.
  • Photobiomodulation: Low-level light therapy boosts cellular energy to decrease local tissue degradation.
  • Intravitreal injections: Dual-pathway therapies like Faricimab manage secondary complications such as internal fluid leakage.
  • Vitrectomy surgery: Surgeons like Dr. Ahmet Satici perform complex micro-invasive procedures to repair macular architecture.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A major advantage in Turkey is the concentration of American and European board-certified specialists. For example, Dr. Peykan Türkçüoğlu trained at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, and Dr. Mehmet Sahin has handled 30,000+ retinal cases. This ensures patients receive care that mirrors top US academic standards at a focused boutique clinic pace.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that getting the correct genetic diagnosis is the most important first step. Many were surprised by the detail of the retina workups, including fundus autofluorescence. They say clinics focus heavily on monitoring and vision rehabilitation to help manage daily life.

In which Turkish cities and major hospitals are the top macular dystrophy doctors located?

Top macular dystrophy specialists are primarily located in Istanbul and Ankara. These cities host JCI-accredited eye centers and university hospitals. Experts prioritize genetic diagnostics and cellular therapies. Leading clinics include Veni Vidi Eye Clinics and Dunyagoz Eye Hospital.

  • Istanbul: The primary medical hub with specialists like Dr. Ahmet Satici and Dr. Peykan Türkçüoğlu.
  • Ankara: Features academic centers like Private Koru Ankara Hospital with specialists like Dr. Mehmet Sahin.
  • Antalya: Regional branches of Dunyagoz offer specialists such as Dr. Semra Coskun for retinal monitoring.
  • Specialized facilities: Centers like Veni Vidi provide advanced imaging, vitreo-retinal surgery, and genetic counseling.
